Apex Award Designer Profile: Sugoi

Apex Award Winner
Sugoi
How did you get your start in design?
In University, a friend of mine and I started a small company creating tee shirts and other basics items for sports teams. That evolved into us supplying promotional apparel to local outdoor recreation companies, and then ultimately technical apparel. It all started with that small company in University.
How would you describe your design process? Where do you get your ideas?
I try to solve problems in unique ways with my apparel. The beauty of technical clothing is that you can approach each project in a very methodical and quantitative way. What does the garment need to do? How does it need to perform? These answers will shape the final design.
What was it about this specific Polartec fabric that intrigued you? What problem did it solve? What role does performance and quality play into your process? How did you decide you needed to work with Polartec?
At Sugoi, we create products for athletes competing in very aerobic sports such as cycling and running. When you’re aerobic, breathability is key. There is nothing worse than overheating and getting sweaty in your clothing. Polartec has always impressed me with their commitment to breathable materials such as Alpha and Neoshell. This was validated by our athletes at all levels who’ve tested our Polartec products.
What did you think when you won the Polartec Apex Award?
It’s always nice to be recognized for your work!
What are the current trends that you’re seeing in your industry? What do you like about your industry? Dislikes?
Athletes want versatility. They no longer want to have 3 or 4 garments in their closet when one will do. They are more inclined to wear their technical apparel out on the town in a casual environment. The product not only has to perform, but also be beautiful and engaging. Technical apparel is now acceptable as a fashion statement. The fact that our industry is constantly changing and evolving like this is a constant motivator.
What’s the most exciting thing about your job? Most exciting thing about designing?
I really enjoy working with athletes and team members to solve technical problems. We are the official technical apparel sponsor for Ironman, and also sponsor a pro-tour cycling team, so I have the fortunate opportunity to work with world class athletes.
What advice do you have for up-and-coming designers?
If you love what you do, chances are you’ll be very good at it. Be willing to work hard, and stay focused.
