While struggling with a severe case of writer's block, Adam, a romance author who doesn't believe in a happily ever after of his own, agrees to go to a wedding with his best friend John, hoping it will take his mind off his impending deadline. However, when it inspires an idea for his next book, he asks John to join him on a series of "research dates," hoping to build off that success. It seems to work, until Adam realizes that he not only has plenty of ideas for his book, but very real feelings for his best friend—the one person he'd most vehemently like to spare from being involved in his disastrous love life for fear of losing him.

“And also? Don’t send me to voicemail, you dick.” Adam let out a loud peal of laughter, the sound a relief to Gerard because it completely dissolved the tension in the room. “Next time I’ll just let it ring and pretend like I was too busy to answer. Got it.”
