Do you think Hades/Pluto gives his children protection from monsters?
What first made me think that is that part in SON when Hazel flashbacks to Pluto visiting her mother and telling her that if they go to Alaska they'll be out of his protection. Which implies that he already was protecting them up until now.
And come to think of it...we know about Hazel's childhood. We know she was ostracized and bullied by everyone she knew except Sammy. We know she was always finding cursed jewels just by walking down the street. We know her mother was rumored to be a witch.
Not once is there a mention of any monsters. Not even any strange incidents that could be the Mist covering it up. Hazel never mentions seeing any people with one eye, or creatures with wings, or anything. Nothing ever tries to kill her. She saw nothing like this until she got to Alaska. And considering monsters were coming after Percy by the time he was like six, Hazel making it to her thirteenth birthday without a single unusual occurrence (except, you know, the curse) is quite extraordinary - Percy mandated the thirteenth birthday as the limit for demigods to be in camp and claimed because even for ordinary demigods is it risky to be out in the mortal world once they hit puberty, let alone a daughter of one of the Big Three.
We don't know as much about Bianca and Nico's childhood as we do about Hazel's, but there is that one flashback scene in TLO. It's hard enough to keep one child of the Big Three alive in the mortal world, let alone two, and if her kids were regularly being attacked by monsters Maria probably wouldn't have been so quick to dismiss Hades' offer of shelter in the Underworld. It seems that monster attacks weren't a problem for the di Angelos.
So, do you think Hades/Pluto protects his kids in the mortal world?
Well, up until the di Angelos got out of the Lotus Hotel and a manticore tried to kidnap them, I guess.
I’ll assume he does bc supposedly the mediterranean is like shitfull of monsters and while venice is in the adriatic, that’s still part of the region and yet nothing happened to them.. what’s more, the massive issue they had was a god, not monsters (and what’s even more, given how easy to find they were, everybody up in olympus knew about these two little fellas)
also, as you say, maria’s always shown in a good light as a mother, which means if she’d been offered protection for her children and the kids had been constantly attacked, then she’d have thought about it twice ((tbf tho sally did reject camp despite loving percy but that’s for another day))
as for hazel, I think pluto even says that if they move to alaska he won’t be able to protect them anymore, and marie get’s pissed off bc she considers protection to be more of like a child-support thing than literal fending-off-monsters
