It's my biological imperative to never shut up about Abdul Kareem Alsharei, muezzin extraordinarie and cat guy from Aden in Yemen, so I made a mood board inspired by Hasten to Salvation. The image in the centre is the exact chapter in the Quran featured in the fic, and one that I always have a soft spot on precisely because I struggled to memorise it as a kid and somehow succeeded anyway and can still recite it from memory decades later.
No other show has made me reassess and consider my relationship with the faith I was raised in as much as Pluribus, all because of a character that has only been mentioned once in the whole series so far, and alhamdulillah for that.
Genres and Me
Last night I went to see Disclosure Day, and I really enjoyed it. While watching it, I found myself thinking about other recent media about first encounters with extra terrestrial life such as Plur1bus, the final scene of Kelly Baldwin in For All Mankind and Resident Alien. (Somewhat surprisingly the earlier Steven Spielberg movie it felt like the most to me was Minority Report. It was because of the mass surveillance and frenetic work place that needs to be abandoned. I really was expecting Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which I have seen more recently.) I would never say that Iām interested in UFOs /UAPs or theories about extra terrestrial life. I donāt even read articles about recent congressional hearings on the subject. But I consume enough fictional media related to it so that it also seems dishonest to say that Iām uninterested.
Alien encounters stories are not the only kind fictional sub-genre that I would not say Iām a fan of. Recently I was asked if I read any detective fiction, and thoughtlessly I want to say no. But then I think of some recent reading and say I have read all of the stories in which two detectives appear; Kate Atkinsonās Jackson Brodie and Stephen Kingās Holly Gibney. Itās a more honest and interesting answer, and if anyone else im that discussion had read either it could have led to some interesting places. And thatās to say nothing about TV or movie detectives.
I just want to be able to talk about my interests in a way that is honest and doesnāt feel like Iām giving a distorted impression of myself. Why is that so hard?
