After living in Quito for a month I went to Chone for three weeks to work at a more rural hospital. Chone has a population larger than Corvallis but it is super spread out and only has dirt roads. It was a lot hotter and more humid than Quito. There was also a lot less to do in the evenings, but long days in clinic made up for it. 

We didn't make any friends in Chone because everyone harassed us constantly. It was weird being an outsider because no one really paid attention to us in Quito. Chone barely has any tourists so they were not use to seeing gringos running around. People were also yelling out their car doors the few English words they knew. We got many " I love yous" and even a "hi teachers" from a group of children. 

The hospital we worked at is one of the lowest ranked hospitals in all of Ecuador. In a single month 12 newborns died due to an infection in the NICU. It is pretty obvious from the moment you walk in that it isn't the cleanest place. We spent the majority of our time in pediatrics which was a lot of consults. Every time I took out my stethoscope the children screamed bloody murder. I did get some of them to laugh by making silly faces.

One of the first days we were there a festival was happening. The whole town closed down and there was a huge parade. Later that night our host dad took us out for some canelazo and dancing. He was pretty wild for an 80 year old! Everyone had signs that said 100% Chone Lindo, which means 100% Chone Beautiful. It is slightly ironic because Chone is probably one of the least beautiful places in Ecuador. Every time I tell an Ecaudorian that I spent time in Chone they ask me "WHYYYYY?"
