thinking about flashcards for my chemestry revision 🧐
02262020 | kinda missing miami ...
i found some really neat papers while writing up my proposal, my advisor says my thesis should hit around 40 pages ... so now i’m wondering what tangents i might have to trim out once my track switches. i’m giving him a lot of drafts this week to look over, so that i can get my materials out of the way.
on a side note ... would like to go back down to miami sometime soon.

finally retrieved my next zafón read! if any of you were here last summer, you’ll probably remember how i slogged through la sombra del viento, and really started to fall in love with spanish fiction (moving onto allende for a while). now i’m back where it all started, and i hope i enjoy this book too. 🥀

private language [gotta be real here ... ion know what this means]

one of my favorite semantic concepts is the descriptive / expressive dichotomy. you can have a word that’s purely descriptive [woman], and one that is purely expressive [ouch], or even a combination [bitch -- a woman with negative connotations]. Adam Croom has written a few articles on the mixed des./exp. types of slurs, which is helping me in my own research.
✨✨✨ reading about atoms and their history takes me back to the good old times when i was just beginning to learn science with my favourite professor ever (he made me want to go into STEM).
so i figured it was a good waste of my time to do a little timeline even if there isn’t much chance of this information being in the exam 🧐
02112020 | finding meaning : the phoneme
it’s now been a month that most of my studies have been focused on meaning and where it comes from. i’ve worked my way through saussure and the philo-boys, and now i’ve reached jakobson, trubetzkoy, and the beginnings of what we study today in phonology.
i know, i know, phonology is the theoretical side of sound systems, but it makes sense to me? phonetics in general feels organized and steady [in its instability] and that’s a bit comforting. also, phonemes rock.
