tl;dr, ulkoilla speaks about vegan ice cream (and for some reason can’t put a cut in the text) I have a friend who is allergic to milk and soy. She can eat almond ice cream etc. but as these often aren’t found in small places, she often is left without. Once her SO bought her a product called Vege Pop, a popsicle made of carrots and mango.
She hated and and told the story about the worst popsicle she had ever tasted. Naturally, I had to buy one to see myself when the opportunity presented. And I was immediately hooked. I don’t think I had many ice creams that summer, always a Vege Pop. They had different tastes, like beetroot and strawberry, but the carrot and mango was maybe my fav.
I guess they didn’t sell well because I haven’t seen them in years. So I was forced to extend my horizons. Since then I’ve tasted different vegan ice creams, and noticed a trend of the taste getting closer and closer to the ordinary milk or cream-based ice cream.
Which is fine for those who can’t or don’t want to eat milk and cream but miss the taste.
But what about the variety? They’ve figured out how to make these amazing tastes where coconut combines with raspberries, dusty sweetness of oat cream with chocolate, and umami of fava bean with freshness of mint.
So many amazing products have vanished, I guess because they haven’t sold well enough. I want to see them brought back. I want to pick them up from the shelves of supermarkets, I want to buy them in school cafes.
To the fellow non-vegetarians I want to say, be adventurous, if you can. Support the vegan choice, ice cream or other. Try different brands if the first one doesn’t take. There is a world of different taste in there.
