EL PRESENTE

Loma abajo al resol de la mañana, un pimpollo de pacana

se yergue hoy del todo quieto entre las peñas

si me  muevo, oculta la piel gris

entre las sombras que dan los robles

con el viento. Quizá no lo vea

esta vez, no conozca el denso instante

que aúna pasado y presente... su viso claro

y su rielar, su baile sobre huecos que picapinos

otrora martillaron bajo el haz,

cuencas negras por donde veríamos hasta el corazón,

en un descuido.

THE PRESENT

Down the hill, this morning, in a blaze of sun, a hickory sapling

stands perfectly still among the rocks

when I move, its gray skin hidden

among shadows oak branches make

in the wind. Maybe I won’t see it

this time, won’t recognize the dense moment

past and present are together—its bright shine

and shimmer, the dance of it around holes woodpeckers

once pounded and pounded beneath the surface,

dark sockets we might see all the way to the heart through,

if we’re not careful.
