FLIGHT ACADEMY
This basic flight school, inaugurated in 1922, was one of the first airfields of the Belgian Air Force. Originally and until the eve of the Second World War it was the basis of a squadron of observation aircraft. Early on in the Second World War the airfield was attacked and bombed by the Luftwaffe. The squadrons hastily retreated to other airfields with the remaining planes. The planes that wern’t destroyed were eventually evacuated to France. By the end of the war the airfield was bombed again, but this time by the American airforce. The airfield was rebuilt from scratch and reopened in 1950 and became a basic flight school. Until 1969 the flight school was equipped with  Belgian made two-seat trainer biplanes. As of 1969 they were replaced with trainer planes from the Italian company Marchetti. At that point the airfield, that until then only had a grass runway, got two asphalt runways. In 1996 the activities of the flight school were transferred to another military airfield nearby. A few of the building are still used today by two clubs. The barracks have fallen completely in disrepair since 1996.
