Lind, Washington, 2016
A shirttail relative on my mother's side lived in Lind, and I remember really boring childhood visits listening to adults chatter. Had not been in the town in many years, so we took a detour on a 2016 trip across the state and had lunch in the restaurant in the old brick bank building on the left. As in most towns its size throughout the country, the commercial activities of Lind have all but disappeared. Left behind is a kind of ghost town.
I've been on an audio drama kick this summer. My main discovery so far is DERELICT and its prequel FATHOM which is just EXACTLY my kind of shit. Both are "oh something has gone extremely fucky in this tightly enclosed dangerous space (underwater research station in Fathom, space ship in Derelict) and we're piecing it together bit by bit"-type sci fi horrors, and they're really good at it.
The primary antagonist for most of Fathom in particular, Mack, is just the best kind of bastard. He's the AI running the whole station and unlike many other machine-style antagonists, he has no problems lying to you, although he does prefer lying through omission, and in such a way that by the time you get around to checking whether he's lying to you or not, it's already too late and whoops turns out you've ended up furthering his plans a bunch and will now probably die. It's hard writing a good "Turns out every road you took to avoid my plans led you right back huh :) "-type antagonist, but they pull it off with this virtual asshole.
There's also some very fun main characters in this thing. The guy who ends up being the main one, mostly because he has Sci Fi Superpowers and thus is really really hard to kill, does have a fun "Oh boy here we go again"-type of approach to the madness that his actor manages to make charming rather than smarmy which is always fun. Oh, and do you like Complicated Women? Eva Graff is becoming something great and terrible out of grief and a need for vengeance, and while I personally don't condone that sort of thing, it IS very interesting to hear her go to there.

Some of these old, crumbling buildings would make awesome apartments which are especially needed in a country with a shortage of (affordable) accommodation. But converting old buildings is expensive and for developers, the only simple way to make the venture profitable is to sell luxury apartments. And so, the process of gentrification.
These buildings will probably collapse before anything is done with them.
В воскресенье меня отвезли к бабушке. Тут я тоже не могу чувствовать себя комфортно. Меня постоянно хотят вышвырнуть на улицу, чтоб я гулял и не страдал херней дома.
Мне пришлось выйти. Я бесцельно шлялся по городу, пока не зашел вглубь частного сектора. Там я нашел заброшку, которую еще ни одна компашка подростков не успела занять. Я провел в ней несколько часов, после потащился домой. На следующий день я вернулся в тот дом. Там я все обыскал, полазил по всем полкам, даже на чердак залез(лестница и потолок грозились обвалиться в любой момент). Еще я хотел слазить в подвал, но вход был засыпан песком. В доме я откопал 2 телефона и зарядки к ним. Я забрал их.

Еще я нашел дохлого кота.
Вход в эту заброшку скрыт. Нужно зайти во двор, потом пролезть за гараж, там пройти немного, потом пролезть через заросли крапивы и ты на месте. Во время выполнения мной этих действий, до меня начал докапываться бухой дед. Он пытался меня прогнать, яростно размахивая руками, при этом стараясь кое-как держать равновесие и не упасть. Спустя несколько минут невнятной ругани он послал меня и поперся таскать хлам с мусорки в подъезд.
