The Pickwick Papers, Chapter 17
«Mr. Pickwick, it is quite unnecessary to say, was one of the most modest and delicate–minded of mortals.» (Chapter XXII) ~ «“Is it not a wonderful circumstance, . . . that we seem destined to enter no man's house without involving him in some degree of trouble? Does it not, I ask, bespeak the indiscretion, or, worse than that, the blackness of heart—that I should say so!—of my followers, that, beneath whatever roof they locate, they disturb the peace of mind and happiness of some confiding female?”» (Ch. XVIII) ~ Still #Reading: #ThePickwickPapers by #CharlesDickens. Having a wide variety of entertaining moments in each chapter, which I want to enjoy as long as possible, The Pickwick Papers has already become the funniest novel I have ever read and I don't want it to end soon. I love the variety of the inner stories within the main story, which are further proofs of Dickens' wit and genius already observable in the main plot, foreshadowing how great and successfully versatile an author #Dickens would be. ~ «“'Cos ugliness and svindlin' never ought to be formiliar with elegance and wirtew”» (Ch. XXV) ~ «And numerous indeed are the hearts to which Christmas brings a brief season of happiness and enjoyment. How many families, whose members have been dispersed and scattered far and wide, in the restless struggles of life, are then re-united, and meet once again in that happy state of companionship and mutual good-will, which is a source of such pure and unalloyed delight . . . How many old recollections, and how many dormant sympathies, does Christmas time awaken!» (Ch. XXVIII) ~ «“... how the long-forgotten thoughts of former days rushed upon his mind, as he almost ran up and down the narrow yard—as if intelligence would arrive the sooner for his hurrying—and how bitterly a sense of his helplessness and desolation rushed upon him, when he heard the truth!”» (Ch. I present for your consideration, one Mr. Tracy Tupman. Described as a great lover of women, gone somewhat to seed and grown rather fat. Quick to turn his head to admire a pretty girl. Covering for something, perhaps?
This was the only part of this book I could remember with any clarity, and I still love it.
sandwich in her hand, no mouth to put it in
No gay yet but there's still time.
OMG reading the preface to Pickwick and Charles is all like okay see this is full of weird plotholes because it was published serially and I changed his mind about how I wanted to do things as I went, and it was really hard because every installment had to stand more or less on its own --
1836 Charles: “It is obvious that in a work published with a view to such considerations, no artfully interwoven or ingeniously complicated plot can with reason be expected.”
1852 Charles: Hold my beer.
