there’s all these deep analyses about the real reason mike was acting so weird around will at the airport and those are all excellent, obviously, but like what if he just saw will with a new haircut and a few extra inches of height and a sharper jawline and a big, hopeful smile on his face and simply short-circuited?

ok, hey, real talk --- how the fuck did the being survive that gunshot wound. do you know how brutal 18th century guns were?? the balls they used were way larger than bullets, and because the balls were made of softer lead, they tended to warp and mangle on impact instead of just punching cleanly right through. i’m guessing the ball didn’t pass out of his shoulder, since he says he isn’t sure whether the ball stayed in the flesh and the exit wounds were massive enough that he’d have had to notice, so that metal is probably still in there. he notes himself, too, that the wound ‘shattered’ his bone (likely the scapula). not broke, not snapped, shattered. so take all that and add in the fact that he had no doctor, no clean bandaging, no alcohol to sterilise the wound, no forceps to dig the metal out, and you’ve got a pretty NASTY mix. a wound like that genuinely should have killed him or permanently crippled him for life.
