The Samsung SPH-N270 is more commonly known as the Matrix phone--and for good reason. Modeled after the phone used in The Matrix Reloaded, the SPH-N270 was created by Samsung's in-house designers working in tandem with the design team responsible for the Matrix to make sure both phones were identical.
Like the Moto Pebl, it featured a spring-loaded hinge. Unlike it, this one opened upwards, revealing a 128 x 160 px LCD screen with a unique UI skin (over MediaTek's MAUI OS) meant to totally immerse Matrix superfans in their favorite fictional world.
The most striking part of this phone, though, isn't anything to do with the Matrix itself--it's the unprecedented integration of speech controls.
You read that right. The SPH-N270 could call any contact you wanted simply by speaking their name aloud. You could even dial new numbers just by saying them to your phone. This may seem trivial now, but in 2003, it was a huge selling point.
Unfortunately, that didn't translate to huge sales. While Matrix and phone enthusiasts alike praised the design and the voice features, it was seriously lacking in other departments. Despite being released in 2003, it had no web browsing or Bluetooth capabilities, and it only supported some features of USB transfer. It also had no ability to send text messages.
Samsung says only 10,000 individually numbered units were ever made to emphasize its collectability (and justify the $500 price tag). However, no serial number over 2,500 has ever surfaced, leading some to conclude that Samsung grossly misrepresented the amount of phones produced. Their motives for doing so are unknown.
If you're interested in purchasing one, they go for about $1,000 on secondhand sites, and sell fairly quickly--so get looking!
so that's TWO objects made in steven's image in the last two eps that were either already coming apart at the seams, or fine for the moment but still about to get broken
