A phone worth keeping for longer - Phonebloks
Did you know that? 1. E-waste represents 2 percent of America's trash in landfills, but it equals 70 percent of overall toxic waste. The extreme amount of lead in electronics alone causes damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood and the kidneys. 2. 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are disposed worldwide every year. 3. Cell phones and other electronic items contain high amounts of precious metals like gold or silver. Americans dump phones containing over $60 million in gold/silver every year. 4. Only 12.5 percent of e-waste is currently recycled. 5. For every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, 35,274 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered. 6. Recycling 1 million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year. 7. E-waste is still the fastest growing municipal waste stream in America, according to the EPA. Source: dosomething.org When you read such statistics on E-waste it is a breath of fresh air that someone out there is trying to make a difference to how we view and use technology. Phonebloks is a different and a new innovative way of looking at the same everyday technology in our pockets called the ‘phone’. The idea is simple. The ‘PhoneBlok’ design which is currently in its prototype stage allows every person to choose what and how they want to use their phone. If you want a camera heavy phone, you simply attach a better camera on to your ‘PhoneBlok’ just as you would with a lego piece. Or if you want a longer battery life you simply compromise on other areas and attach a larger battery. Rather than replace the phone because it no longer suits your needs, you simple remove and add the bits you need according to your changing requirements. Projet Ara annulé!
La plus grosse annonce du Projet Ara s'est déroulée hier, IL A ETE ANNULE. Comme ça. Pour Google ça a toujours été un objectif à atteindre, une expérience assez importe. C'est devenu un projet sur plusieurs années qui allait s'achever. Donc pourquoi tout stopper?Je veux dire il y a 4 mois seulement en mai, un grand changement dans leur design a été effectué en promettant une version développeur pour l'automne et que le téléphone serait complètement prêt en 2017. Eh bien la réponse politiquement correcte est qu'ils ont décidés de faire un grand nettoyages dans leurs produits électroniques. Abandonner des projets afin de réorganiser la structure de certaines compagnies. Pour donner la version brève, Google n'ira pas jusqu'au bout. Ce qui craint un peu, cela aurait eu un impact incroyable mais un profit assez réduit... Voilà, les mauvaises langues peuvent être contentes.

Dutch designer Dave Hakkens has big, innovative ideas of an ethical nature. The world first took notice with his project Phonebloks – a phone formed of separate, updatable modules, thus eradicating the need to replace the whole device. The idea was so strong it caught the eye of Google/ Motorola who were also developing a modular device behind closed doors. Release of their ARA modular phone is scheduled for later this year. Dave's latest project is no less ambitious as he attempts to enable the world to recycle waste plastic.

Precious plastics is a simple concept. We have developed our own machines to recycle plastic. And we share all the blue prints free online with build tutorials. With this knowledge everyone can set up their own little recycle factory.
Currently we are spreading the knowledge across the globe to enable everyone to potentially recycle plastic waste. We are now on day 74 with 63437 shares across 228 countries. >>
The idea for the project first came about when I started to look at the numbers – how much plastic there is and how much gets recycled. Then in addition to this, during my travels in less developed countries whilst swimming in oceans I have seen ow many places are affected by this problem with my very own eyes.
I started to wonder why this should be the case. Is it more difficult to recycle plastic than other materials?
After some research, I actually discovered that plastic is quite easy to recycle, it's made for it. The temperatures are much lower compared to glass or steel, which makes it easier to get started. However, there is still limited knowledge about it out there. Recycling metal and glass has been in place for a long time. Plastic is just getting started. >>
Having said that, during the development stage it was still essential for me to visit many companies who specialise in plastics, and where the machines they use are built. Originally I built V1.0 of the machines as part of my graduation project. Since then I have collaborated with a specialist builder to develop V2.0, which took about two years to complete. But I’d say the main reason for that is that I have also been working on other projects and our manpower was limited. Full time we could have completed V2 much quicker.
As with any new process designed to reduce the environmental impact it is essential to evaluate it's own impact. The only real downside of the machines at present from an environmental perspective is the energy consumption. Consequently, we would love the next version to make use of alternative energy such as solar or wind power. >>
To date we estimate there are roughly 100 people around the globe currently developing machines based on the blue prints. It’s amazing to see other people building these machines on the other side of the world. Every now and then we receive updates – people sending videos/ photos from London, South Africa, Mexico and beyond.
But the icing on the cake is when you hear of people using the machines to create products that could really make a difference. For example some guys from Barcelona are making water filters. We are also seeing the systems being scaled up for use by local authorities in developing nations, although this is a slow process and there is a long way to go.
For the majority of users the first step is to get the machines up and running and learning about plastic as a raw material.
But slow and steady progress is fine by me, it worked for the tortoise! ∎

Project Ara: i moduli vedranno la luce?
Era in cantiere da qualche anno, ma sembra che adesso Google sia finalmente pronta per rilasciare agli sviluppatori, in autunno, un primo modello del più che mai discusso smartphone modulare.
Project Ara nasce dall’idea open-source di smartphone modulare, Phonebloks, del designer olandese Dave Hakkens, che concepisce un device aggiornabile, tramite moduli, in modo da ridurre sensibilmente la quantità di rifiuti elettronici: lo smartphone sarebbe dotato di una scheda madre, su cui i moduli verrebbero agganciati tramite pin o elettro-magneti; tra le infinite possibilità ci sarebbe anche quella di agganciare più moduli dello stesso tipo, per avere così un device votato più alla fotografia piuttosto che all'autonomia o magari al sound.

L’idea raccolse subito il consenso della rete e anche l’attenzione della sopracitata Google, al punto da commissionare Project Ara al proprio incubatore tecnologico ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects, creato dall’ex direttore del DARPA, Regina Dugan).
Il 20 maggio scorso, dall’account YouTube ufficiale di Google ATAP, è stato pubblicato un video di presentazione dello smartphone che (forse) vedremo commercializzato nel 2017:
Sebbene l’idea alla base sia innovativa e, soprattutto, ecosostenibile, penso che debbano passare ancora molti anni prima che Hakkens possa veder realizzati i suoi sogni. Non solo perché, come si evince dal video, i moduli di Google sembrano essere soltanto una personalizzazione dello smartphone (avendo la scheda madre formata dalle parti fondamentali, quali display, batteria e cpu, che quindi non potranno essere aggiornate), ma anche perché, a mio avviso, i tempi non sono ancora maturi.

Se col primo PC IBM, grazie all'abbandono dell’end-to-end e il rilascio delle specifiche tecniche, si è assistito alla nascita del mercato delle componenti hardware, con uno smartphone modulare si potrebbe assistere quindi all'avvento di un “mercato di moduli” (conseguenza già prevista e incentivata da Hakkens), ed è proprio questo aspetto che non mi convince.
Con la nascita del mercato dei componenti hardware, le aziende produttrici di PC desktop tradizionali si sono concentrate più sulla produzione di notebook, smartphone, tablet e PC desktop all-in-one (tutti poco aggiornabili), che su quella delle componenti stesse; soltanto questo dovrebbe bastare a capire come la maggior parte delle aziende punti al consumismo del “compra, usa finché non è antiquato, ricompra”, tralasciando, ovviamente, i casi di obsolescenza programmata.

Alle grandi aziende, quindi, non conviene produrre device che possano essere completamente aggiornati; il cliente non comprerebbe più loro merce ma quella dei produttori di componenti: insomma, che politica imprenditoriale sarebbe?!
Se, in tutti questi anni, il mercato dei notebook, più anziano e maturo di quello degli smartphone, non ha ancora assistito alla comparsa di un portatile completamente aggiornabile (cardine dell’idea di Hakkens, trasposta agli smartphone), non credo che, tantomeno, assisteremo presto alla nascita di uno smartphone completamente modulare.
Ma io, per un futuro non troppo lontano, sono ottimista.
