DARPA Industry Day to Spotlight Future of Agentic AI Systems
DARPA is launching a new program called MATHBAC — short for Mathematics of Boosting Agentic Communication — aimed at changing how AI systems talk to each other and work together . The program uses math, systems theory, and information theory to help AI agents share data, coordinate tasks, and pull useful insights from complex information streams . DARPA is hosting an Industry Day on April 21 to bring together researchers, industry partners, and academics to shape the program's direction .
The bigger picture: MATHBAC isn't about building smarter solo AI tools — it's about creating AI systems that evolve, collaborate, and contribute to scientific discovery, especially in defense . This marks a shift from AI as a task-runner to AI as an active problem-solver operating within teams of other AI systems .
Why it matters for communicators: As agentic AI moves from concept to government program, communicators need to understand this shift now — because explaining what AI systems do together will soon be just as important as explaining what a single AI tool does alone.

The Total Information Awareness program was set up in 2002 under the unprecedented executive authority provided by the Patriot Act, as a project of the Information Awareness Office within the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
"Potential applications may include analysis of political stability in regions of the world, prediction of the timing and impact on national security of emerging technologies, analysis of the outcomes of advanced technology programs, etc. In addition, the rapid reaction of markets to knowledge held by only a few participants may provide an early warning system to avoid surprise.
The Human Identification at a Distance (HumanID) program aims at developing automated biometric identification technologies to detect, recognize and identify humans at great distances.
Methods for fusing biometric technologies into advanced human identification systems will be developed to enable faster, more accurate and unconstrained identification of humans at significant standoff distances."
