A brown egg with glowing cracks sits on dark, molten rocks, surrounded by an orange-red fiery light.
A brown egg with luminous cracks sits atop dark, textured molten rocks. The ambient glow is an intense orange-red, casting a fiery light on the scene. The environment appears volcanic, with the surrounding rocks having a rough, porous texture, mimicking cooling lava. The lighting creates a dramatic contrast between the glowing cracks and the darker surfaces, enhancing the sense of heat and energy.

His boots made a sloshing sound while William was running through the puddles. He quickly turned his head to see if they were still behind him. He couldn’t see far though. The night around him was too dark. Strong wind blew the hair out of his face exposing his fierce eyes. Where were they?
It didn’t matter as long as they were far gone. The further he was away from them the better. So, he continued his run. The road lay dark in front of him. Heavy rain obscured his view. Suddenly, he stumbled, lost his balance and fell face-first into a puddle. The briefcase he had held closely fell out of his grip and slid a couple of feet away. He hurried upwards.
Were there voices behind him now?
He grabbed for the handle, pulling the briefcase from the ground. There definitely was the sound of boots and steel just a few streets away. No time to lose! And off he sprinted again, not really taking in his surroundings. Just down the road and around another corner…
“Will!” someone shouted through the rain. A door had opened next to him. He stopped in his tracks, almost slipping again, and met eyes with a boy whose long brown hair hung down his shoulders. Nicholas, he recognized in surprise.
“What are you doing here?” he asked
“Get him in”, another voice called from inside the house. Dorothea was here, too?
Before Will could react, the boy jumped forward and pulled him inside. The door fell shut behind him.
“Dim the lights! They’re right behind me,” Will warned and looked for the light sources. Some candles were lit around the room. Dorothea didn’t hesitate and put them out. The last burning one she held up to Will’s face.
“What happened? You were supposed to leave the city two days ago. And where is Pox?”
“Long story,” Will replied shaking. His wet clothes were glued to his body. The cold finally swept through his body into his bones. “We got into some unplanned trouble and had to lay low for a bit. Pox is…” He froze mid-sentence as he remembered.
Instantly, he put the briefcase to the ground and opened it. The cloth inside was soaked. Will cursed as he unfolded it. The phoenix egg inside shone orange in the dim light. Luckily, it didn’t seem damaged. When he touched the shell though, it was as cold as ice.
“We need to heat it immediately and…” Will jumped up without finishing his sentence and closed the distance to the empty fireplace. Just a moment later, Dorothea was beside him. She put a hand on his shoulder trying to calm him down.
“We can’t light it, William. What about the king’s man outside?”
Will turned to her. Panic was spread across his face. “Then leave with Nick now! You sneak out to the back and leave the city to the South. Find Wolf, he’ll know how to keep you safe.”
“And what about you? We came to help you,” she whispered desperately.
Will held the egg up to her eye level. “This IS Pox! When we were inside, he started to lose all his feathers. He went up in flames just a little later and I found this egg in his ashes. If I don’t warm it up soon, he might not be able to hatch again.”
