The Originals 4x10 “Phantomesque”

Inside a psychiatric hospital room everything appeared disheveled. A table knocked over, it’s wooden legs splintered, torn sheets and pillow stuffing strewn about,  glass from a busted window, and mangled body lay in the middle of the entire mess.

Originally, Naoya had come here to investigate one of those psychotic breakdowns, but now it had turned into a homicide scene. The breakdowns themselves were very strange but judging from the body, this murder wasn’t done through normal means either....

In any case, due to his connections, mostly through Nanjo, he’d been given permission to check things out. However, he hadn’t been informed about anyone else coming on the scene and, to his surprise, a certain young man ended up walking in on him while he was inspecting the victim’s corpse.

“Oh.... I guess you’re on this case too, huh?” He mumbled, glancing at the teen briefly. This was awkward.... but he didn’t actually have much time to make small talk before something decided to make it’s presence known.

A demon leapt from it’s hiding spot, small in size but looks were deceiving as demonstrated by the creature taking another chunk out of the corpse (lucky for Naoya whom had quickly gotten to his feet and backed away. That chunk coulda ended up being taken outa him, had he been a little slower).

“I don’t know how much he cares about family. I don’t think he cares that much about family. I don’t think he gives a shit about family. I really don’t. He doesn’t give a shit, if Kol is in a box, or if Finn was in a box for centuries.

He can’t talk about family. It’s one of the big things I have with the writers. As many times as I possibly can, I have erased or removed lines about family, and I’ve bullied my way out of hundreds of occasions where he’s talked about family first because he doesn’t mean it and he doesn’t believe it.

He loves his brother, and in a strange way, the whole show is about this bizarre love between these brothers that cannot be together, but cannot be apart. The whole show is predicated on that strange love, and that’s all there is to it. He says family, but he means Klaus, above all, and he means himself, above all.

He made some kind of pact with himself, from the outset of their curse, and that was to serve his brother. Everybody else can go to hell. He loves Rebekah, but even Rebekah can flee and he won’t care. He’s always going to be where his brother is, or try to serve his brother and to serve the two of them.

I feel like they’re one soul, and two different aspects of one soul. I’ve always felt that way, and it’s something that I still steadfastly believe.”

~ Blue Exit ᴹᵉʳᶜʸ

“Gillies experience directing his film Broken Kingdom was undoubtedly rewarding, but exceedingly laborious. The film ended up taking five years and it’s financial constraints demanded that he be creative and  resourceful with his time. Directing The Originals, Gillies noticed some definite similarities and significant differences.

“It was different in the sense that there was way more money in The Originals than there was in my independent film, and far less disasters--a well oiled machine, The Originals,” he describes.

There was freedom that came with the generous budget: access to high quality production sets and equipment. But still, there were limitations. Although immensely grateful for the opportunity to direct the episode, he was confined to the show’s requisite style and aesthetic.

“In a sense you’re like a hunter-gatherer. You’re sort of at the mercy of other people’s ideas in a sense. When you are directing for yourself, you’re collecting pieces to edit your own ideas.”

He eagerly welcomed the challenge of recreating an episode and utilized his familiarity with the show’s dynamics to his advantage. “But yeah,” he admits, “there’s nothing quite like your own signature as well.”
