Why you should volunteer!

There are many ways to live life, we know that. One such way is to stay at home, watch TV and waste your days away; another, more productive way, is practicing CAS. Creativity, Activity and Service, by its initials, is a union of projects by which students are capable of interacting with their local community’s problems and shoot their shot at adding to the solution. By being active participants in CAS, students find a way to make a meaningful, positive contribution to their community which in turn makes them whole as a person.

One way in which you can give back to your community is by helping children. One of the most prominent projects in CAS is SAV, “Siguele A la Vida”, by its initials in Spanish. This project, committed to providing services to kids who have special needs or live in shelters, has students regularly schedule visits in which they organize activities to stimulate their creativity and brighten the kids’ moods, letting them get back to being just children. At the end of the visit, they gift the children toys—which they had previously asked for—and give them the choice to participate in minigames the students have already planned.

Another way of helping your community is by caring for the environment. Inside CAS, a leading project known as Proyecto Verde is focused on any and all environmental matters in relation to their community, and is thoroughly involved in the process of spreading awareness about its importance. Through its activities, PV has been able to form strong bonds with its academic community, garnering a strong, positive reputation by establishing more and more green areas on school grounds, and implementing policies that aid in minimizing the damage human activity has on its surroundings.

A third way in which you can enrich your time by assisting within your community is volunteering to help stray animals find a home. A social group that carries on this purpose is CICREA, a project focused on providing animals with the care and love they deserve. Through its work, CICREA has found hundreds of animals a loving home, and provided shelters with food and other resources which in turn help them help others. The work done by the students at CICREA has given them the opportunity to contextualize themselves with an important problem that devastates Tijuana, and develop methods to improve the situation of those affected by it, garnering valuable experiences on the way.

In conclusion, stepping outside of your comfort zone and giving back to your community can be a powerful resource to make you feel whole as a person. Actively engaging in issues can help you find solutions to problems that you had never even thought about, which will make you more aware of what goes on in your locality, and aid in diminishing this ignorance that may be holding you back from making a relevant and important change, not just for you, but for others.
