@bmarvels the story idea you helped me come up with :)
âIâm sorry Ms. Heartfilia,â the teacher hands her back her latest practice exam results, âI know you try really hard in this class, but maybe Chemistry is just not your subject. Â Most students struggle with a subject or two, thatâs normal.â
âBut itâs going to pull my GPA down if I canât boost my grade in this class.â Â Lucy slumps back into her seat, âand if that happens my dad might make me quit the cheer squad.â
Professor Warren crosses his arms in a relaxed manner, leaning back against a near by desk. After a couple minutes he taps his chin, âmaybe one of my AP chemistry students could tutor youâŚ. yeah,â he sits up straighter, âIâll just ask my top kid, Iâm sure heâll agree to it.  Does Thursday after school work for you?  You two can just use my classroom for an hour or so then figure out a schedule of your own from there.â
âThat would be great! Thank you, Mr. Warren!â
Lucy was a bit nervous all through her Thursday classes, wondering who this tutor was going to be, and praying that theyâd be able to help her with her problem. Â It wasnât that the grade was horrible, for many kids, Câs still got you a degree. But for her, well mainly her father, it wasnât good enough. Â Bâs or higher, that was the deal and sheâd had to beg and plead just for that. Â To him anything lower than an A was a disgrace.
She adjusts the strap of her backpack and picks up the pace. Â It would be horrible to make a bad impression on the first meeting. Â Lucy envisioned a shy or introverted guy, probably the typical nerdy type with glasses the whole nine yards and she wanted to do her best to put him at ease. Â Everyone assumed because she was a popular cheerleader that sheâd be extroverted or even ditzy when in reality Lucy was top of their class in English, top 10 percent in history and loved nothing more than to curl up with a good book to read at home or in some tiny coffee shop. Â The giggly, bubbly blonde routine was all for show on the field, but it wasnât exactly who she was.
As Lucy entered the room, professor Warren was speaking with a young man near his desk and she presumed it was her tutor. Â Pink hair, I think Iâve seen that kid around. Sometimes hunched over a book in the library or quickly weaving through the crowded hallways, sheâd never gotten a good look at his face before. Â But now standing still, Lucy noted he was possibly a foot taller than her, in decent shape. Â She cocks an eyebrow, he fills out the polo uniform nicely. Â Even the glasses were becoming of him.
Seeing her enter, the teacher ends his conversation and waves Lucy over. Â âThis,â placing a hand on the young manâs shoulder, âMs. Heartfilia is Natsu Dragneel. Â Heâs the President of the Chemistry Club and probably the smartest student we have here when it comes to science. Â Iâm sure heâll be able to help you out, oh and I already went over with him what I think you could work on so he could tailor the tutoring sessions. Â With that Iâll leave you two.â
By the time the teacher left the room, an awkward silence had slowly begun to bloom. Â Assuming her suspicions were accurate, Lucy takes it upon herself to break the ice. Â She sticks out her hand, âHi! Â Itâs nice to meet you Natsu!â Â
Natsu cups the back of his neck with a slightly heated flush. Â Itâs not often, okay well maybe more on the rare side that heâs ever this close to a female and let alone one this pretty. Â He shakes her hand, âyeah, nice to meet you too,â but quickly withdraws it. Â âShall we get started? Â I assume you have better things youâd rather be doing.â
Well that was a little rude. Â But Lucy ignores the snide comment, simply smiling again and nods, following Natsu to a set of tables where heâs already got some papers set up. Maybe heâs just socially graceless, she shrugs to herself and takes a seat opposite him. Â
As Natsu shuffles through what looks like practice sheets, Lucy folds her arms and lays them on the table, leaning over a bit to watch. Â Sheâs gotten used to her own body and how her boobs tend to squish up from this position, but while most guys at least glance, Natsu doesnât even batt and eye. Weird. Â Oh, well, itâs not like she wanted that to happen, frankly Lucy hated guys who thought she was one of those, âdo anything to be popular,âgirls. Â âSay, I wanna thank you for helping me Natsu. Â I really need to get my grade up to at least a B in this class, so the tutoring is gonna be a real help.â
âDonât worry, and I wonât tell anyone youâre getting extra help.â
âWhy would I care?â
âI assumed you have an image to keep up, being one of the popular kids and all.â Â
Lucyâs eyebrow twitches, but she keeps her calm, âthanks for the concern, but no itâs not a problem if anyone knows.â
âAlright,â Natsu places a piece of paper in front of her, âletâs get started then.â Â
For the first 20 minutes or so, the problems were fairly easy for Lucy, she understood them, but as they grew progressively more difficult so did Natsuâs attitude towards her.  At first, she brushed it off, reasoning in any way to justify the rude attitude.  She needed this help and if he was the best, she would try her hardest to endure some discomfortâŚ.
He runs his hand down his face with a groan, âfor the third time, calorimetry is about measuring the amount of heat released or absorbed during a chemical reaction because that tells you if the reaction is exothermic or endothermic.  So, that still means whether its bomb calorimetry or constant pressure calorimetry, heat flows are always measured the same way, through temperature changes. See,â he stabs at the problem listed on the paper with his finger, âE, the answer is E!â  Â
âOhâŚ. I-Iâm sorry, Iâll get it the next time.â Â
âSure,â scratching out the answer and grabbing a new sheet, mumbling, âthatâs what you said last time.â
The tears Lucy had been holding back burst free.  She couldnât take it anymore.  âLook Iâm sorry!  Iâm trying my best here andâŚâ
âMaybe if you put as much effort into this as you probably do with cheer, youâd get it.â
That was it. Â Without another word, Lucy grabs her things, shoves it haphazardly into her backpack and runs out of the room desperately trying to wipe away the tears that cloud her vision. Â He is such an asshole! Â She had enough people judging her just because she did cheer, and she didnât need the guy who was supposed to be helping her doing it too! Â Cheer was a great way to get some exercise and yeah, while some of the other members were looking at it as a means of popularity, she wasnât one of them. Â Heâs just like my father!
Natsu had brushed off the girlâs reaction. Â Sure, he could have been nicer but what for? Â He had meant what he said and maybe if she focused more on her studies she wouldnât be struggling. Â Oh well, they ran in different crowds anyways and while Professor Warren might give him hell for it, what was that old man going to do? Â They needed him to win the Decathlon. Â
Back at school the next day in the library, Natsu was focused on his Pokemon Go! when suddenly, another firecracker slaps him in the back of the headâŚ.  The thwomp sound that echoed in the room was loud enough to gain the librarians attention, but before Natsu could really respond or protest, said feisty girl had started to pack up his belongings.  âLevy?  What the hell?!â
âYouâre coming with me!â she shoves the bag in his chest and through gritted teeth, âsomewhere I can scream at you as loud as I want to!â
âIâm notâŚâ Levy raises her book to hit him again.  âOkay, Okay!â putting up his hands in defeat.  âJust donât hit me again!â
âNo guarantees,â she grabs his shirt sleeve and drags him from the room. Â Every door she passes, Levy scans it and finally, almost to the end of the hall, she finds an empty classroom and pushes Natsu inside. âSit,â she points at the nearest desk while she closes the door to muffle her shouting from the hallway. Â Â
âI still donât know what your problem is,â Natsu drops his backpack next to the chair. Â âWhy the hell did you hit me so hard too?â he rubs at the slow forming tender spot where sheâd smacked him, âit friggen hurts!â
âWell you deserve it!â Levy finally takes a stance in front of him, leaning against another desk. Â âHow can you be in such a good mood, knowing you made a poor girl cry yesterday?!â
âHowâd you know about that?â
âLucy is one my closest friends and she called me in tears last night! Â Why the hell were you so mean to her? Â Iâve never known you to be such an asshole Natsu. Â I mean,â throwing her hands up, âwas she rude, did she do something, say something to piss you off? Â Lucyâs always been a sweet person too so what the hell happened?â
Natsu sits back in his chair, crossing his arms with a furrowed brow. Â âI didnât know she would be friends with someone like us. Â I assumed she was, you know, one of those people.â
âWhat is that supposed to mean?! Â Those people?â
âLike the popular girls, the stuck up, spoiled kids that thumb their noses at us, plus I know sheâs rich. Â I bet she was only getting tutoring cause they need to maintain a certain GPA to be on a team.â
Levyâs demeanor switches and if he thought she was angry before, Natsu swore steam was starting to rise from her head. Â âNatsu,â she pinches the bridge of her nose in disgust, âLucy is on the cheer team because she enjoys it, and sheâs certainly not even close to what you think.â Looking back up, âfor starters her English and History scores are higher than mine and yours. Â Chemistry is really the only class she struggles in. Â And lastly, yeah, she might come from money, but sheâs one of the most down to Earth people I know!â Â
Standing up and slamming a closed fist on the desk and setting Natsu into a straightened sitting position, âyou hate it when others stereotype us and thatâs exactly what you did to her!â Â All the blood drains from the young manâs face. Â But his stunned silence does not go unnoticed. Â âNatsu,â Levy leans back against the other desk with a long exhale, âyou need to make this right and I wonât take no for an answer.â
âAlright,â he holds up his hands in defeat before slumping in his chair.  âBut⌠W-What am I supposed to do?  I canât, I mean I wouldnât know what to even say besides Iâm sorry.â Natsu grabs his bag from the floor and places it in his lap. Â
âWell you better figure it out by tomorrowâŚâ
âWait! Â T-Tomorrow?!â
Nodding, âtomorrow, 1 pm and donât you dare be late, meet us at Faeâs Diner understood?â
âButâŚâ
âExcuse me?â her eyebrow twitches.
âNever⌠Never mind,â he mumbles and clutches the bag tighter like a shield, âIâll be thereâŚâ Â
Around 9pm that evening, thereâs a knock at Natsuâs bedroom door, just seconds before his mother is walking in with 2 cups of steaming hot chocolate. Â Â Â Â
âMom?â he sits up on his bed. Â âWhat are you doing here?â
She hands a mug to him and sits on his computer chair facing him.  âThink I donât know my son well enough?  You barely touched your dinner and for a boy that usually gets second or third helpingsâŚâ taking a sip of her drink, âsomething is wrong.â
âIâm fine,â looking anywhere but his mom and sipping at the chocolatey drink, âmaybe Iâm just coming down with a cold or something.â
âOh, I seeâŚ.  Should I make an appointment with the doctor so he can poke and prod at you?â  Placing the mug on the desk, she clasps her hands together in contemplation, âhmm, or better yet force you to drink that nasty medicine you love so much?  YeahâŚ. I know I still have half a bottle leftâŚâ
âI give, I give! Â No gross meds!â Â Natsu closes his eyes with a sigh, âI made a girl cry on Thursday and now I need to figure out how to apologize.â
âForget the meds, you deserve a slap instead! Â I didnât raise my son to be mean to girls!â
âPlease donât,â he cringes, âLevy already cracked me a good one,â rubbing the back of his head, âit still throbs.â
âI knew I liked that girl for a reason.â Settling back in her chair and picking up her mug, âAlright son, tell me what happened.â
âIt all started when Professor Warren asked me to tutor a girlâŚâ
For the next 30 or so minutes, Natsu went through the entire story from start to finish leaving nothing for the imagination. Â It was tough, admitting to all the rude comments and watching his motherâs reactions. He could tell she was deeply ashamed of how he had behaved but still she sat there not saying a word until the very end.
â⌠so thatâs everything,â his head hung in shame, voice quieted.  âLevy was right, I judged her before getting to know her first.  Mom, Iâm such an idiot,â he settles the empty mug on his bed with a groan, âsheâs so pretty too,â a slight flush alighting his cheeks, âand smart.  I checked around and what Levy said about her kicking my butt in English is totally true.â
His mother could see the pain behind her sonâs expression, feel the weight being shouldered through a shaky voice. Â There was no reason to admonish him any more than he was already beating himself up over. Her drink now cold and long forgotten, she stands up and sits on the edge of the bed next to him, placing a reassuring hand on his knee.
âNatsu, the important thing is you realize what you did was wrong. Â Yes, it took Levy knocking some sense into you, but at least you have the opportunity to fix things and start over with this Lucy girl.â Â Giving his knee a gentle squeeze, ânow, you say you think sheâs pretty?â Â She giggles and he nods lightly while the blush re-erupts upon his cheeks. Â âMy sonâs first little crush!â
âMom, so not funny!â He harrumphs, crossing his arms in a dramatic manner.
âI know, I know,â she chuckles, âIâm sorry forgive an old woman for her amusements. Â So, do you have a picture of her?â
âUm,â looking over at his bookshelf, âyeah she should be in a yearbook.â Â Natsu stands up and grabs it from the shelf, flipping through the pages as he walks back. Â âHere,â he hands his mom the open book, pointing towards a photo. Â âThatâs her, Lucy Heartfilia.â
She looks closely at the high-quality black and white photo, noting the fresh-faced young girl indeed was pretty, despite not being in color.  âHeartfiliaâŚ. As in Heartfilia Enterprises?  Boy son, you sure know how to pick âum.â
âWhy, whatâs so special about it? Â I know sheâs got some money.â
âHer family was one of the wealthiest in our city, I mean Jude Heartfilia is still rich but after his wife passed away about 10 years ago, he lost some of that fortune because of all the medical expenses her illness left behind.â
âOh man,â Natsu plops back onto his bad, âyouâre telling me the girl I made cryâs mother is dead? Great, that makes me feel even worse now.â
âYou said you have to meet them tomorrow, right? Â Thatâs your chance to apologize and make it up to her. Â So, what are you planning to say or do?â
âI have no idea!  Ugh, Iâm not good at talking with girlsâŚâ
âTell ya what Natsu, tomorrow morning Iâll take you to the store and weâll go look for a small gift, flowers, or something. Â Do you think you can find out what she might like, maybe stuffed animals, anything?â
âI can text Levy, sheâll probably give me some pointers.â
âThatâs a start. Â As for what youâll say, just show her the same emotions you showed me tonight, about how sorry you are for hurting her like that. Â If you are genuine, Iâm sure she will accept your apology. Â It sounds like sheâs a sweet girl, so hopefully sheâll forgive you, or at least wonât be mad at you anymore.â
âOkay⌠ Iâll text Levy too.â
âGood,â standing up, his mom grabs the two mugs ready to leave, âget some rest, weâll leave after breakfast.â
âThanks mom.â
âYouâre welcome Natsu.â
~~~xx~~~
He didnât know how long he had been pacing in the alley next to Faeâs diner. Â An hour or was it only 30 minutes? Â Checking, rechecking the time on his phone as the minutes ticked down closer and closer to 1 pm. Â Should he be early? Â Right on time? Â Definitely not late. Â Yes, certainly that would be bad. Â Natsu removes his glasses and wipes at the sweat building upon his brow, whyâd it have to be so hot today? Â As if his nervousness wasnât bad enough, going in there looking like heâd just left the gym was sureto make such a wonderful impression!
The pink and white flowers heâd chosen based on Levyâs recommendation were holding up nicely despite the humidity, and the blue stuffed cat doll heâd bought, Natsu hoped Lucy would like it.  He thought it was adorable, a blue cat with these big round eyes and a silly grinâŚ. It was so goofy, it just had to gain him some kind of smile out of the girl! Â
12:50pm. Â Â Â Â Â
Ten more minutes. Natsu gulps down the scant amount of saliva quickly drying up in his throat.  All morning his mother had helped him rehearse what he could say to the girl without looking like a complete and utter dorkâŚ. But dang it to hell, this is the most nervous heâs even been in his life!  Give him a battle of chemical formulas against his nemesis at Saber High any day compared to this!  Throw him off a cliff and tell him to swim, even that might be preferable.  He was ready to give his apology once coming to terms and accepting how wrong heâd been, but now it reverted back to talking to a girl and Lucy was a very pretty, intelligent one.  AHHHHHHHH!  Thereâs a reason Natsuâs never had a girlfriend before.
12:55pm.
A low groan slash whine leaches from his throat as he tucks the phone back in his pocket and walks to the front of the restaurant. Â This was the moment of truth, suck it up Natsu! Â Dig deep and just get this over with! Â He grabs onto the door handle and walks on in, his gifts tucked close like a shield.
It takes his eyes a moment to scan before landing upon the blonde and blue-headed girls sitting in a booth near the back of the restaurant. Â Whatever Levy was saying to her friend must have been interesting if the adorable laughter erupting from the girl was any indication. Â Were Lucyâs brown eyes always that bright? Â Probably wouldâa seen it last time if youâd made the girl laugh instead of cry. Â Ouch, stabbed in the heart by his own subconscious. Â Natsuâs feet carry him slowly towards the girls with stuttered advancements despite the flight mode dancing in his mind.
As he reaches within a few feet of the table, itâs Levy who first turns, and Lucy, curious as to why her friend had suddenly stopped talking, shifts in her seatâŚ.  The once beautiful shine slowly receding into a look of horror.  âWhat are you doing here!  I-I donât wanna see you ever again!â
But it wasnât Natsu, instead Levy who speaks up and places a hand on her friendâs shoulder. Â âLu, I invited him here cause he wanted to apologize. Iâve known you both for a long time, and I promise he really is sorry for acting like that, itâs not how he normally behaves.â Â
âI donât knowâŚâ Lucy crosses her arms and cringes back, âthat⌠that really hurt.â
âPlease,â a quiet male voice interjects, bringing both girls attentions to him, âI just wanna apologize, a-and if after that you never wanna see me again I promise I will stay away.â
âLu, remember what I told you that night? Â Just give him a chance please, for me?â
She honestly didnât remember a lot from that telephone conversation because she was too upset to think clearly. Â Lucy takes a moment to reflect and the only thing she could think of was an incident that happened to Natsu freshman year with another girl on the squad. Â That girl was graduated now but Levy thinks it still bothers him and thatâs why he treated her the way he did. Â Not that it made it okay, but that at least she could understand it wasnât just how he acted normally.
âAlright⌠Iâll hear him out.â
âGood,â Levy slides out of the booth, âIâll go grab us refills, Natsu would you like something?â He shakes his head. Â Motioning for him to sit, âOkay, then Iâll be back.â Â
Natsu moves to take the spot opposite of Lucy but pauses and juts out the flowers and cat, âH-Here, I got these for you.â
âOh,â she tentatively accepts, âthank you Natsu, you really didnât need toâŚâ
âI wanted to do something,â cupping the back of his neck, crimson rushing along his cheeks as he takes a seat and sinks into the faux leather.  âTalking with girls unless its school stuff, isnât something⌠we-well the little experience Iâve had didnât end so well and, I mean I get so nervous about what to say you knowâŚâ  Taking a large gulp of air, âIâm really, really, really sorry I behaved like a total asshole to you!  I shouldnât have just assumed youâd be like the othersâŚâ  Natsu hangs his head and covers his face the moment he feels the tears welling up, âMom was right, she didnât raise a son to be mean to girls and yet look at what I didâŚ.â Little trails of liquid slipping along his cheeks, his voice quieting the longer he rambles.  âYou were so nice, never made me feel like the weird geekâŚ.  Fuck Iâm such an idiot that I donât deserve being forgivenâŚâ Â
Part of her wanted to stay mad at him at least for a little longer, turn the screws so to speak.  But the longer she watched him unravelâŚ. Heâs cryingâŚ.this guy is crying⌠in publicâŚ.  Since when do guys cry in public?!  Lucy had set her gifts to the side as her own heart slowly bled for the young man.  Natsu really wasnât such a bad guy after all in fact, his melt down made her drift back to the moments before heâd first opened his mouth in that classroom. Adorably handsome, glasses and all and now showing he has a sensitive side too...  Lucy picks up the stuffed animal to scrutinize it.  What a silly looking blue cat!  Like a character in one of her favorite fantasy novels, it was so cute!  Smiling to herself, he did well, picking this for me. Muffled light sobs tear her away from fawning over the toy and back to the situation. Her heart dropping at the sight.
With his head propped on his elbows and face buried in his hands, Natsu was too ashamed or afraidto look up and see Lucyâs reactions. Â He hadnât noticed when sheâd slipped from her seat until a warm set of arms and sweet vanilla fragrance wrapped itself around and startled him. Â Expecting maybe Levy had returned, he straightens out quickly, turning, only to see the beautiful blonde smiling at him. Â âLucy?â
âI forgive you Natsu.â Lucy takes his glasses off and sets them on the table, wiping away at the streaks along his cheeks, âso please stop crying and letâs start over again.â
His gleaming onyx eyes flecked with green practically danced, âD-Do you really mean it? Â I mean yeah, Iâd really like that!â Â
âGreat!â Lucy beams back. âIâm glad you apologized, cause now I got to see the real you⌠ and itâs really sweet.  I hope we can be friends from now on.â
âWait, I thought you just meant tutoring, y-you actually wanna be friends with me?â
âOf course! Â Why wouldnât I wanna get to know someone like you!â Giggling,âitâs so rare to find a guy who is smart, sweet and cute.â
Natsu deadpans and if his face now matched his hair color he wouldnât be surprised, ân-no way.â
âWell of course,â her voice coquette, looking up shyly, âthatâs only if you wanna be friends.â Â
The complete story from InuKag Week 2019. Â 9k words. Â
âBut Mrs. Tai--sho, Inuyasha?!â  Kagome gestures wildly at the delinquent standing with his arms crossed.  âAnd donât you âkehâ me!â she glares at the young man who simply turns his head with his ears pinned down.  Turning back to the teacher, âMrs. Taisho this is not fair, Iâm a straight A student and heâs a slacker!  How could you pair us up like that for this big project?!  Is it because his brother is the school Principle that he gets away with everything?!â
âMs. Higurashi,â the teacher, Mrs. Kagura Taisho folds her hands in front of her and sighs, âI know this may be quite the shock, but your differences are precisely why I paired you up. Inuyasha needs a firm hand to guide him.â  Looking past the young girl squarely at Inuyasha, âand this is his last chance to pass regardless of who his brother is.  If he doesnât get a decent mark on this semester project, heâll be held back a grade.â Turning back to the fuming girl, âwho better to turn to than my top student whoâs also a bit of a spitfire?â Taisho winks.  âDonât worry, youâll have all semester to work on this and of course I will help keep Inuyasha in line he does after all have to come home sometimes.â
Kagome sighs, âI really donât have a choice in this do I?â  Mrs. Taisho shakes her head.  âGreat,â the young girl hangs her head and takes a moment to breathe.  âScience isnât the easiest subject for me and I need to help a reta⌠ not so enlightened person enough to get through thisâŚâ
âOi, I ainât no retard, just lazy,â Inuyasha quips back, but when Kagome looks up and he sees her eyebrow twitch, he quickly turns away again. Â
âItâs true Ms. Higurashi, Inuyasha was a good student once upon a time, itâs just,â sigh, âgetting him to care since, well letâs just say past events happened, hasnât been easy.  Many of us in the family have tried but he wonât listen to us.  You have 16 weeks for this science project, why donât you guys take the afternoon to come up with an idea?  In fact, if itâs okay with your parents, as a thank you, how about coming over for dinner, you two can talk while I cook.â
âEww, I donât want her at our house!â
âYour house?â Taishoâs eyebrow raises.
âI guess that would be okay, I mean youâre right, we should come up with our idea quickly so we can get started on it, Iâll just text momma and let her know where Iâll be.â
âWonderful!â Taisho clasps her hands together. Â âThen gather your belongings and Iâll drive us.â
A couple hours later at the Taisho residence, Kagura is busy in the kitchen. Â As full-blooded demons, she and her husband Sesshomaru arenât very big eaters but as a half breed Inuyasha can consume quite a lot of food. Most nights, he fends for himself, gorging on different flavors of ramen but with a human guest in the house it was only proper she cook a meal. Â The smells of chicken and vegetables simmering start to fill the home and sheâs surprised it hasnât lured a hungry boy out. Â But based on the sounds coming from the living room, he might be a little too indisposed at the moment.
âThese smells are actually making me hungry.â Â Sesshomaru dips a claw into the broth to take a taste. Â Licking his finger, âand I must say your guest is putting a smile on my face.â A loud thump rings out from the other room causing him to grin. Â âI like this one.â
âDamn it whyâd you hit me?!â
âCause you were falling asleep!â
Kagura chuckles, âI agree, she was the perfect person to help him.â
âI swear if you hit me again!âŚâ
âWell if youâd pay attention I wouldnât have to!â
Sesshomaru leans against the counter and crosses his arms, facing the living room. Â âWhat did you say they were working on? Â The final project for your class?â
âMmhmm,â she too crosses her arms and takes a break from stirring. Â âTheyâve decided on a topic but thatâs as far as they got from what I could hear. Â Kagome sat him in front of his laptop to do research and Iâm guessing he keeps falling asleep instead.â
Another thud. âDamn it, Kagome I wasnât falling asleep that time!â
âSounds like heâs lucky to be a half breed,â he chuckles, âor I might end up losing a brother.â
âOoops! Â My mistake.â
With the help of the Taishoâs, Kagome and Inuyasha come up with a timeline to work on the project. It was a better outcome than nothing at all from that first meeting. Â Every Friday afterschool, Kagura would bring the two kids to the house so they could work on it and Sesshomaru would take Kagome home in the evening. Â Now if they could just learn to work together without killing each other everything should be okay. Â Maybe not smooth sailing, but at least manageable. Â
But by the time Kagome was dropped off at home that first night around 8pm she was ready to take a nice soak in the ofuro then crash for the weekend. She didnât know what was worse, track and field season or dealing with such a temperamental brat!  The mental drain was exhausting!  Inuyasha kept nodding off, or not listening, she even caught him playing a computer game when he was supposed to be looking up information on air pressure!  Heâs lucky all she did was hit him with a book cause what she really wanted to do was grab the ornamental sword off the wall and run it through him!  âUgh,â she rubs her temples and sinks deeper into the tub, âthis semester is gonna be a nightmareâŚâ
âARGH!â Inuyasha threw himself onto his bed and buried his face in the pillow. Â âThis sucks! Â This utterly fucking sucks!â Â As soon as Sesshomaru came home from dropping off Kagome, he and Kagura were on him, harping that he needed to get his act together.
You were supposed to graduate this year Inuyasha, but you were held back once, wanna make it two? Â Iâm tired of supporting you, if you donât pass this year, you can get out of the house cause youâll be an adult and my promise to dad will be over. Â
Inuyasha, I know itâs been hard on you after losing your mom, but do you think this would make her happy? Â She would want you to do your best and that girl, Kagome, is your saving grace, donât ruin it. Â Or Sessh is right, we wonât help you anymore.
As much as he didnât want to admit it, they were right about everything.  Most of his problems were all of his own making and both his parents was probably rolling in their graves.  But heâs been this way for over 8 years and changing his personality overnight just wasnât going to happen.  âUghâŚâ âThis semester is gonna kill meâŚâ
~~
Sesshomaru walks over to where his wife is leaning against the frame of the archway sipping on a cup of tea. Â The kids are in the living room working on their project. Â He takes a place by her side and whispers, âawfully quiet huh? Everything going okay?â
She leans over, âyeah, Iâm a little surprised that they could be so civil after just two weeks.â Kagura giggles, âmaybe that miko bloodline she comes from still holds sway.â
âMaybe,â He places a hand on his wifeâs shoulder, âbut looks like you were right about her, maybe she will be the best thing thatâs ever happened to him.â Â Smack! Â Sesshomaru laughs, âor maybe not.â
âOww,â Inuyasha rubs the spot on his arm where Kagome punched. Â âYou are so lucky I wonât hit a girl!â
âTch,â she snickers, âI donât know, seems you like being hit since you always provoke me into it.â Â Â Â Â Â
âKeh! Â Iâm trying here, so cut me some slack. Â I did what you asked and found the information didnât I?â
âYou did and I appreciate it Inuyasha, but thereâs still a lot more we need to do, so I need you to stay focused.â
âYeah, yeahâŚâ
The bell rings, signaling the end of 3rd period.  Monday morning seemed to always be the toughest, aside from Friday.  One would think after a couple of days off students would be refreshed but it was the opposite feeling and now with the project thrown in, Kagome is even more tired than usual.  Kagomeâs best friend Sango knew of her friendâs dilemma and had even offered to help but the young girl had politely declined.  Inuyasha wasnât the easiest to work with but it was slowly getting better, the operative word being slowly, but still, Kagome was sure that things would start to even out soon and she wouldnât be as tired.
âMrs. Taisho wasnât lying,â Kagome explains on the way to their next class, âInuyasha is smart, but getting him to focus and care is the tough part. Â I just donât know why that is.â
âRumor has it, he started acting out after his mom died.â
âOh. Â I can relate to that. Â It was tough after my dad died, but I didnât act out.â
Sango laughs, âthatâs because youâre a better person.â
âI guessâŚ.  Maybe and it wasnât just his mom right, his dad died when he was a babyâŚ. So, I guess I should cut him a little slack.â
âThe sooner you two can really get along,â Sango opens the classroom door, âthe sooner you wonât be so stressed out. Â Speak of the demon,â she looks over and sees Inuyasha already at his seat. Â She smirks, âyour lab partner is already waiting for you.â
Kagome rolls her eyes, but with a slight uplift in the corner of her lips, âso he is. Â First time for everything.â
The girls take their seats, readying themselves for the science lesson. Â Mrs. Taisho starts to hand out the days assignment which looks to be a fun one for once; working with chemicals. Â She tells the students to gather the listed items and bring them back to their desks. Â So, Kagome grabs the chemicals while Inuyasha grabs their Bunsen burner and some glass flasks along with the lighter. Â Seems easy enough. Â Mrs. Taisho floats around the room assisting the students who busily read the instructions for the first test.
âOkay,â Inuyasha holds the paper up, âit says you add a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate to the water, this should create a bubbling reaction.â
Kagome grabs the bottle she thinks is correct and begins to level off a spoonful. Â Inuyasha takes a whiff while he ties his hair up in a ponytail, âare you sure thatâs the right one, doesnât smell like baking powder to me.â
She shrugs her shoulders, âpretty sure, I grabbed what was in that bin.â Â
But something wasnât sitting right for the hanyo, his nose was pretty accurate and something in his gut was turning. Â He watches as Kagome slowly turns the spoon over to allow the contents to fall. Â It took just a millisecond, but the instant the first powder touches the water it becomes obvious to the hanyo that this definitely wasnât baking soda. âKagome!â he grabs her by the shoulders, turning her away like in a slow-motion scene while at the same instant a bright flash and small explosion ricochets through the room.
When Kagome opened her eyes again, she was facing away from their table and still wrapped tightly in Inuyashaâs arms. Â Mrs. Taisho was asking if she was okay, but maybe it was the slight ringing in her ears or the confusion that caused her to just nod slowly while she processed what just happened. Â
âHey, Kagome are you okay?â Inuyashaâs deeper voice so close to her ear snapped her back to the present a little quicker. Â âKagome?â
âY-Yes?â  She turns her head as far as she can to look at him, which was difficult because he was still holding onto her so securely. âWhat⌠what happened?â
Inuyasha finally lets her go, but not before seating her on a nearby chair. Â He kneels down and it almost takes her aback when he starts to speak to her in a calm tone. Â âAre you sure you grabbed the bottle from the bin labeled sodium bicarbonate?â Â Kagome nods her head, a bit of moisture pooling at the corners of her eyes. Â âAbsolutely sure?â Â Again, she nods her head. Â âOkay because teach said that was Cesium and thatâs why it exploded.â
âCe-cesium?â  Kagomeâs hands are trembling in her lap at the realization that she screwed up.  âOh, kami,â her hands fly up to her mouth, ây-you could have, w-we could have gotten so hurtâŚ.â  The tears break free and rush down her cheeks.  She covers her face.  âI screwed up, oh kami Iâm sorry, Iâm sorry InuâŚâ
âHey, youâre fine, Iâm fine, no one got hurt,â he tries to pry her hands away and get her to look at him. âKagome, no oneâs perfect, it probably got put away wrong by the last class, you canât beat yourself up over it.â
âBut you could have been hurt badly!â
âKeh! Â Iâm tough.â Inuyasha smirks. Â âMain thing is youâre okay. Â You are okay right, at least physically, I donât see any marks on ya.â
âThanks to you,â Kagome slightly flushes. Â âYour quick reaction is why Iâm not hurt.â
Mrs. Taisho comes over to check on them again while a couple other students helps to clean up the area. âIs she okay,â she asks her brother-in-law. Â He nods yes. âKagome you still look a bit shaky, do you want to go to see the nurse?â Â She shakes her head in response. Â âItâs the last period and itâs best not to do any more experiments today anyways. Â Iâll have Inuyasha walk you home dear.â
âOh,â the young girl waves her hand, âI donât wanna trouble anyoneâŚâ
âKeh! Â Itâs no trouble,â he stands up with a grin plastered on his face and helps Kagome to her feet. Â âGrab your bag, any chance to ditch school early Iâll take it.â
~~~
âAre you ever gonna let me make it up to you?â Â Kagome asks for the third time that period. Â
âUgh, give it a rest already,â he grits his teeth trying not to yell in the middle of class, âitâs been almost a week. Â I told you itâs not a big deal.â
âTo you maybe, but for me it is.â
Groaning, âIf I say yes, will you stop bugging me about it?â
âUh-huh,â Kagome leans in. âAnything you wanna eat, itâs my treat.â
âOkay fine.â Inuyasha scratches his head, âthereâs a ramen shop between school and my house, we could go there.â
âGreat! Â Iâll tell miss she wonât need to drive us today!â
âFair warning, I eat more than one bowl.â
âI know,â she teases back, âIâve seen you eat so I brought extra cash.â
âKeh!â Â Inuyasha turns back to his lesson.
He couldnât understand what was happening between them, it was weird how in five weeks this girl had been able to get under his skin⌠but in a good way.  No oneâs ever been able to do that before.  Not his family, not his last girlfriend, or any friends for that matter.  Inuyasha peered at Kagome through his periphery.  So easy and unassuming she sat there working on the questions for the day. He couldnât help the glimmer of a smile licking at his corners.  âMy saving grace, huh, I wonder if mom would have liked her too.â  He refocuses on his paper, of course she would have.  Kagome had a lot in common with his mother, a refined, almost regal nature yet feisty enough to put up with a demon.  Inuyasha chuckles in his head.  âOkay maybe not refined, but definitely,â he takes one more look, âpure.â
The following Wednesday, Kagome catches up to Inuyasha at his locker during lunch break to share some information she found for their project. Â As he looks through the papers, Kagome leans in, pointing out things here and there, jabbering about some supplies theyâll need to get for their poster display. âOr we could do a Powerpoint presentation, itâs either or.â
âI think the Powerpoint makes more sense cause we can add videoâs to better illustrate what air pressure is.â
Kagome giggles and pokes at him, âlook at you sounding all smart now Inuyasha, whoâda thought it.â
âHa Ha,â he flashes a fanged grin, grabbing her hand and holding it up near his chest, âlazy but smart remember, get it right.â
She giggles again, but before she can retort someone bumps into Inuyashaâs shoulder hard, causing him to take a step back and her hand to be released. Â The same person grabs her around the waist and pulls her away from the hanyo. Â
âKagome, why are you getting all chummy with this stupid half-breed? Â Heâs so cursed that both his parents died because of him.â
âFuck you Koga!â Inuyasha moves to take a swing, but the wolf yokai places the girl between them and heâs forced to stay his hand. He growls and narrows his eyes at the wolf, âOnly a loser would use a female as a shield.â
âTch, I donât need her,â Koga pushes Kagome aside and squares up, âbut maybe I donât want you to touch me and spread the curse.â  Inuyasha clenches his fists at his sides.  Talking about his mom was always a sore spot and to be called cursedâŚ.  âThatâs right mutt you should know your place.  A half breed like you ainât nothing when it comes toâŚâ
âThatâs enough!!â
The two men stop and turn to see Kagome with her hands fisted and the most menacing aura surrounding her. Â Humanâs may not sense it, but these demons could feel the energy surging around her. Kami the girl was pissed! Â She walks straight up to Koga and slaps his face so hard the entire hallway grows silent. Â She moves between them, blocking Inuyasha in a protective stance. Â
âHow dare you say those things about him! Â Just because his parents are gone doesnât make him cursed because if it does then add me to the list! Â My dad died when I was younger, you gonna say that was my fault?â Â Koga is so shocked that someone, even more so a woman had slapped him that he didnât respond for a second. Â âWell?!â Kagomeâs hands land on her hips, âyou gonna answer me? Â Am I cursed too?!â
âThisâŚâ Koga clears the shaky tone.  âThis is between me and him, it has nothing to do with you.â
âOh, like hell it doesnât. You think Iâm gonna let some brutish wolf make fun of my friend you got another thing coming. Â Now get lost!â
âTch!â Â Kogaâs friends, Hakkaku and Ginta start pulling him away. Â âThis ainât over!â
Kagome glares at the trio until she could no longer see them. Â She was still shaking, she was so furious. Â Inuyasha places a hand on her shoulder to get her attention and almost takes a strike to the jaw, ducking and catching her fist instead. Â âKami, Inu Iâm sorry!â
He drops her hand, âdamn, woman you are scary when you get that angry. Â Remind me not to piss you off that badly.â
She flushes red, âwell he just made me so angry, i-it just came out.â
âCome on,â he shutâs his locker, grabs their stuff and takes her hand, âletâs get out of this hallway. I need to report this to Sessh.â
âO-Okay.â
Half way to the principalâs office, Kagome stares at their joined hands. Â She looks up at Inuyashaâs face and notices the tenseness of his jaw. Does he realize? Â Her cheeks growing warm, she averts her eyes to the floor and mumbles, âUm, Inu you can let go of my hand now.â Â Â
He lets go immediately. âOh shit, I didnât realize!â
âDonât worry, I kinda figured,â she reassures him. Â âBut, um, I was wondering, why would he say that about you? Â I mean like, is there something about demons I donât know about?â
âNo,â Inuyasha lets out an exhale, ânothing like that. Â Heâs always had something against me, and I donât even know why. Â But to bring up my mom like that was a low fucking blow.â
When they reach the office, Kagome goes in with Inuyasha so they can fill Sesshomaru in with all the details. Â He wasnât surprised that Koga tried to pick a fight with Inuyasha, but he was taken aback that Kagome was the one who ended it and reassured her that Koga would be pulled in for a discussion since heâd put his hands on her. Â Once that was done, Sesshomaru gives them passes back to their classes.
As they are about to part ways Inuyasha stops her. Â âKagome, you know thanks for standing up for me back there and Iâm sorry about your dad.â
âYou donât have to thank me Inu,â she smiles. Â âI lost him when I was 7 in a car accident. Â It was hard but I realized I had to move on, I think thatâs what he would have wanted.â
âYeahâŚâ
She places a hand over his heart, âInu if you ever wanna talk, Iâll listen.â
For a few moments, the pair stand there, face to face in front of the office.  The look on Kagomeâs face, it was so sweet, so serene as her hand stayed its position upon his chest.  His breathing slows, by kami was she always this breathtakingly beautiful? âY-yeahâŚâ Inuyasha swallows hard, âIâll remember that.â
âGreat!â Kagome bounces on the balls of her feet, âIâll see ya after school Inu,â waving as she skipâs away, âwe can finish talking then.â
âRight!â  But his feet are glued in place.  His hand sweeps over to where he could still feel the warmth of her hand lingeringâŚ
~~~~ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
âWhat took you so long?â Miroku leans over and whispers as Inuyasha takes his seat. Â âClass is half way over already.â
âDonât worry âbout it, just had a run in with Koga at lunchtime.â
âI donât see any marks on ya, he didnât get a hit in?â
âDidnât have a chance.â
âWhoa!â The teacher looks their way and Miroku ducks back down, but as soon as she goes back to writing on the board, he continues. Â âDid you knock him out first?â
âNah, girl stepped in between us.â
After Miroku picks up his jaw from the ground, his expression switches to a lecherous grin. âSo, is she cute?â
âKeh!â Inuyasha turns away, but he couldnât hide the slight burning in his cheeks from his friend.
âOh ho!â Miroku pokes at this buddy, âbro you neeeed to give me details after class!â
âWill you shut up,â Inuyasha grits his teeth, âbefore the teacher comes over here!â
âFine,â Miroku straightens out, âbut I will find out who she is sooner or laterâŚâ
Of course, that monthâs full moon had to fall on a Friday of all days. Â It was common knowledge that hanyoâs like himself had a day when their demon powers waned, and the human side took back control. Â But for Inuyasha, the feeling of being weaker never sat well with him. Â Human frailties like disease cost his mother her life and even though it was just part of existing for them, that didnât mean he had to like it. Â You had a better chance of being struck by lightning than to see him on one of these nights and so the fact that Kagome was still going to be at his house when his turning would occur bugged him all day through classes. And yet, he couldnât bring himself to cancel their session.
Inuyasha stared out the living room window watching the sun slowly make itâs decent below the horizon. It wouldnât be long now, he could feel the tingling in his finger tips and the fading scents around him.  He talks a dry gulp before gently tapping Kagome on the shoulder.  âI need to warn you about something, I⌠t-tonight is my human night so in a few minutes Iâll be turning.â
âOh,â she turns to look at him, tucking a few stray strands of hair behind her ear, âwhy is that a big deal or something, like do I need to worry cause youâll get all weird?â
He blinks at her nonchalant tone, âum no, just didnât want you to freak out.â Â He motions over his shoulder with his thumb, âIâll be right back, I like taking a shower after I change.â
âSure,â she smiles, âtake your time.â
He was right on the dot by the time he had reached his room for the change to begin. Â Hair shifting from white to black, his fingers, the claws retracting into human nails. Â The oddest feelings were as his canine ears receded and human ones appeared instead. But he was used to it all, and after a minute, Inuyasha opened his eyes to the new man staring back from the full-length mirror. Â He sighed, saddened by the loss of his extra senses. Â It really wasnât such a necessity in this day and age, but it was still a handy feature. Â After gathering his clothing, he retreats to the bathroom for a quick shower. Â Â Â Â Â
When Inuyasha returns for the project, he stops in the kitchen to grab them drinks and runs into his brother, drinking tea and reading a newspaper. Â
âHow are things going Inuyasha?â
âFine.â
âOh, just fine? Â You two are getting along so much better now. You even allowed her to stay despite it being your human night,â Sesshomaru puts his paper down, âany significance?â
âThat-Thatâs none of your business. Â But for the record I just wanted to stay on track.â
âMmhmm,â his brother snickers, âthen you should get back to it then.â
âKeh!â
âAny significance⌠ Damn him trying to read into this like thereâs more to itâŚâ Inuyasha reaches the archway and notices Kagome rubbing the back of her neck and turning her head from side to side like it was stiff.  He gulps, she had put her hair up in a messy bun and her neck was justâŚ
He puts the bottles of water down on the table in front of her. Â âYour neck sore?â he asks and takes a seat next to her on the floor.
âYeah, a little. Thanks for the water,â she smiles and looks over. Â But when she realizes how different he looks, her eyes widen, âwow, I mean itâs still obviously you, but the black hair makes you look so different! Â Aww, and the doggy ears are gone! Â I like those ears better.â
âYou do?!â
âI wanna rub them, they look so fluffy and cute!â
âMaybe one day,â he mumbles as his cheeks flush. Â âIf you want, I can give you a neck massage. Youâve been working really hard today and I barely did anything, itâs the least I can do.â Â Â
âThat would be really sweet!â
Inuyasha scoots behind her and shifts her between his legs. Â Guess his human form came in handy tonight, he looks at his hands before placing them gingerly on her shoulders, no claws. Â Kagome pulls her knees up and lowers her head, giving him all the access, he would need. Slowly he began massaging her shoulders, starting at the edges of her collar bone and working his way towards the middle. Â He kneads at the muscles, searching with the pads of his finger tips for any knots or tight spots. Â âTell me if thereâs anywhere that hurts the most.â
âOkay,â she breathes out. Wow, she mused inwardly, even as a human Inuyasha had some strong hands. Shouldnât she be a little surprised that he knew how to massage a person?  Oh, like itâs hard to figure out. Kagome closes her eyes and just lets the relaxation carry her away for a spell.  This feels so niceâŚ. Her mind driftsâŚ. Could his touch always feel like this?  She starts to imagine his strong grip, teasing other areas of skinâŚ.  Crap! Donât go there!  She screams at herself.  Friends just friends and this project weâre working on, nothing more!  But it might be nice for moreâŚ.  Kagome groans internally, maybe the massage was a bad idea.
He didnât need his demon senses to figure out Kagome was enjoying the massage. Â A few little cringes when he touched upon a sore spot, but for the most part she just sat there stoically and every so often he earned a wispy sigh. Â Ugh! Â Every time she did that a shiver ran up his spine! Â Inuyasha was after all a normal male and after this little episode he might need to take stock of another feature. Â It had been a couple of years or maybe three since heâd been physically close to another girl. Â Nothing sexual, but they had made out a few times and now sitting here with Kagome, Inuyasha was starting to miss that. Â
âFeel better,â he asks 20 minutes later.
âVery much,â she blushes lightly and looks down as she fiddles with her fingers, âthank you Inuyasha.â
Now it was his turn. He averts his eyes knowing that his own cheeks had grown warmer, âno problem.â
~~~~~
Theyâd surpassed the mid-way mark of the semester and it was crunch time for a lot of the bigger projects for all their classes. Â Kagome had spent her lunch breaks the last couple of days studying poetry since she had to write one for a class assignment. Â So, as she and Inuyasha make their way towards the school exit, her stomach makes itself vocally known. Â
Inuyasha laughs, âyouâre starting to sound like me. Â Wanna stop for food on the way to my house? Â I could go for some ramen.â
âYou can always go for ramen,â Kagome giggles, âbut yeah that sounds good.â
As they round the corner and see the doors, Inuyasha pauses, âoh crap, itâs Miroku,â halting her advancement and pulling her back.
âWho?â Â She peers around, âthe guy talking to Sango?â
âYeah,â Inuyasha looks around too. Â âBut heâs been bugging me ever since the Koga thing about you.â
âWhy?â
âDonât worry bout it, heâs just a perve whoâs curious what you look like.â
âEww!â She tries to step away but is held back, âbut heâs bugging my friend!â
âShh!â Inuyasha tries to cover Kagomeâs mouth. Â âKeep your voice down. Â You know Sango can take care of herself.â
âInu youâre being silly. And who cares if he knows what I look like, I have no interest in someone like him.â Â She grabs his hand and starts to pull him, âcome on, Iâm staaarving!â Â
He couldnât believe he was allowing himself to be pulled along by this girl! Â But there he was being led by the hand towards Miroku and Sango, who looked like she was bout two seconds away from slapping the guy. Inuyashaâs eyes pan towards the entrance, it would be so easy, just grab Kagome and run out before Miroku could get in a word. Â Yet his feet kept travelling in the same direction he was being pulled. Â What the hell was happening to him?
As soon as Sango sees Kagome, she slips away from Miroku and starts walking towards her and Inuyasha. Miroku is annoyed at being interrupted but when he sees the hand holding⌠his eyes flash and he quickly brushes past Sango to saddle up closer to Kagome.  âYou sly dog Inuyasha!â  Brushing his hand along her arm, âhowâd you manage to land this fox?!â
The hanyo pulls Kagome away from the lecher, but drops her hand at the same time, âit isnât what you think,â crossing his arms, âshe was just dragging me over here cause I didnât wanna come!â
âIn that case,â Miroku tries to grab for her hand, âif youâre single,â he wiggles his eye brows, âthen Iâm in the market.â
Kagome yanks back her hand and narrows her eyes, âwerenât you just hitting on my friend not 2 seconds ago? Â As if Iâd give you the time of day.â
âOh ho, lemme guess, this is the girl isnât Inuyasha, the one that stepped in between you and Koga? Feisty and beautiful! Â But just to be clear, Iâve been trying for a year to ask Sango out, but she keeps turning me down.â Â Miroku feigns a sigh, âone day sheâll say yes, and Iâll be able to give up my lecherous ways.â Â
Sango rolls her eyes, âif I believed that of you, you might actually have a chance.â
âA chance?!â Miroku leaps over and kneels before Sango, grabbing her hand again. Â âI would be your devoted slave, my queen,â kissing the back of her hand. Â She blushes despite trying her hardest to get angry and pull away. Â âA chance is all I require to prove my love for you.â
âOh, brother,â Inuyasha snorts. Â Kagome giggles. Â He glares at her with a look not to encourage the idiot but that only makes her laugh harder.
Kagome calms her fit, âas amusing as this show is, Iâm fricken hungry so can we get going Inu?â
Sango finally gets Miroku to let her hand go. Â âWhere are you guys going?â
âThe Shiba Ramen place near Inuyashaâs house,â Kagome answers her friend.
Miroku chuckles, âI see heâs got you going there too now, huh?â Â Turning to Sango with the best cutesy face he can muster, âmy treat, if youâd be so kind to join me?â
âOi! Â Who invited you in the first place!â Inuyasha growls.
âOh, my mistake, did you wanna be alone with Kagome?â Â Miroku retorts.
âIâŚ. Keh!â  Inuyasha snorts and turns away. Â
Kagome speaks up now, âyou can come only if Sango agrees to it.â
âPlease,â Miroku tries even harder, âI promise to behave.â
After a minute Sango finally caves in and the group heads out. Â Surprisingly, Miroku manages to control his more, naughtier behaviors and they spend the next couple of hours eating, joking around, and talking about different subjects. Â It was almost perfect to Kagome, she got to spend time with her best friend Sango, the guys were trading one-upping stories about dumb shit that had them all laughing. Â What a way to start off the weekend. Â Sure, theyâd have to spend a couple of hours working on their project tonight but going in with a happier mood should make things smoother. Â
Inuyasha was so comfortable in the booth next to Kagome, it was a subconscious move when he found his arm draped over her shoulder. Â His first thought was to remove it, but then again, by her slightly shifted and leaning against him, was she actually enjoying it? Â Or maybe she didnât realize she was doing it either? Â To move it now would certainly draw her attention and the irrational side of his brain growled at him to do no such thing. Â If she was happy, he was happy.
Things were starting to wind down and the conversation had shifted into lighter topics. Â Then in the middle of a sentence, Miroku stops talking, his eyes wider, staring past them, and annoyed. Â Everyone stops and follows his trail as a female voice breaks the silence.
âInuyasha is that you?â
The hanyo turns his head as he recognizes the voice. Â âKikyo?â In a flash the warmth of his arm leaves Kagomeâs shoulder, and so quickly that her hair shifts in the burst of air. Â âWhoa!â he jumps out of his seat and hugs the woman. Â âWhat are you doing here?â
âI recently moved back to town,â she hugs him back. Â Stepping away again but only by a foot, Kikyo looks over to the girl who was sitting next to Inuyasha. Â âNew girlfriend?â
âHuh?â Inuyasha looks at Kagome who has a mortified look on her face, then back to Kikyo. Â âNo, sheâs just my friend.â Â
âOhâŚâ
Both Sango and Miroku sat back in shock as they watched Kagome deflate in the booth.  It was clear how oblivious Inuyasha was of his simple statementâs effects on the poor girl, but he seemed too over joyed to see his ex-girlfriend again.  As the pair stood next to the table chatting quietly and even exchanging numbers, Kagome sat devastated.  Okay fine, itâs not like he was lying, they werenât a couple but⌠it still hurt.  She thought theyâd been getting along so well, even to where maybe, just maybe there was a chance at something a little more but as he just blurted out, she was just a friend in his eyes. Â
~~~~~~
âIâm just gonna⌠go pay my bill,â Kagome quietly tells Sango and Miroku before sliding out of the booth. She was careful not to make any physical contact with either Kikyo or Inuyasha who were standing almost against the table and slips away unnoticed. Â
âShould we follow her,â Miroku whispers to Sango, âshe looked pretty upset.â
âNo,â Sango responds, âKagome prefers to be alone if she is. Â Iâll call her after we leave.â
Miroku narrows his eyes in the hanyoâs direction. Â âI should just go pay for my bill too, and maybe we should all just ditch Inuyasha.â Sango blinks, for a guy who was still a total pervert, she could see how annoyed he was at his friend. Â Guess Miroku has some standards, she muses to herself. Â He pats her leg, âfollow me.â Â Sango just nods and grabs her bag ready to go. Â
Clearing his throat in an exaggerated manner, âExcuse us,â Mirokuâs tone is rude and annoyed. âWeâre leaving.â
Kikyo moves out of the way so the pair can get out, never saying a word. Â Inuyasha looks around and realizes Kagome was also gone. Â âOi, Miroku whereâs Kagome?â Â But Miroku flips off his friend without turning around and he and Sango simply walk over to the cash register.
âSorry, I gotta go,â Inuyasha stammers out leaving Kikyo standing alone by the empty table. Â He catches Miroku just as they are about to walk out the door and grabs his friendâs arm. Â âOi, I asked, where is Kagome?â
âDo you really care?â His friend spits back. Â âYa didnât seem to mind ignoring her once Kikyo showed up.â Â Miroku tries to pull away but Inuyasha grips tighter.
âWhat the fuck are you talking about? Â I was just talking to an old friend, so what?â
At this point Miroku yanks harder and frees his arm, walking out the door behind Sango. Â âArgh!â Â What the hell is their problem? Â He tosses enough money onto the cash register and storms out still snapping at their retreating figures. Â âHey! Miroku, you asshole! Â Sango! Â Somebody tell me what the hell is going on!â
This time itâs Sango that stops to face off with the hanyo, glaring. Â âShe probably went home, happy now we answered your question?!â Â
âGo back to your ex, Inuyasha,â adds Miroku, âseems like you two were picking right up from where youâd left things.â
Inuyasha blinks, âwhat in the world would make you think that?!â
Miroku rolls his eyes, âoh, I donât know, like how excited you were that you almost whacked Kagome in the head trying to get out of the booth. Â Maybe by the way Kikyo kept touching your arm and you not pulling back, in fact you leaned in closer. Â You guys trading phone numbers and your face was practically giddy about it. Â Shit I was mentally preparing myself to see you two start kissing or something, probably why Kagome couldnât take it anymore and left.â
The hanyo growls, âThat is not how it happened, youâre totally exaggerating!â
âShe saw it all, we saw it all, and youâre the one in denial. Â Inuyasha, you didnât even notice her leave! Â I didnât even see your ears flicker which means you were fully focused on only Kikyo. Â So, donât you tell me Iâm the one exaggerating.â
âButâŚâ Fucking hell! Was it really that bad?  âUgh!â Inuyasha runs a hand over his face.  âI was happy to see Kikyo but thereâs no way Iâd ever go back with her.â
âSure, looks like Kikyo is hoping for a second chance, and itâs not like you were turning down the advancements.â  Miroku sighed, âtake it from a guy who does a lot of flirtingâŚâ
âThatâs an understatement,â Inuyasha mumbles.
â⌠Kikyo was flirting with you and you were completely going along with it.  Am I right Sango?  Thatâs how it looked right?â  She nods her head.  âSo, either youâre lying to us, to yourself, or if youâre telling the truth then the person that deserves the truth and an explanation is Kagome.â
Inuyasha roars and takes off, leaping away. Â Itâs been some time since heâd pushed his muscles like this running along walls, jumping over fences and houses. Â Not knowing where she lived, he tracked the air for Kagomeâs scent. Â It couldnât be too far he assumed considering she went to the school in this district. Â
So, okay maybe there was a bit of lingering emotions for Kikyo, he couldnât deny that but at the same time he knew to get back into a relationship with her would be a mistake. She wasnât good for him and heâd come to realize that after sheâd ended it 2 years ago. Â Kagome, yeah, the girl was definitely imprinting on him and he was starting to crush on her, but he still wasnât certain yet of anything. Theyâd really only gotten to know each other for a few weeks, and he didnât want to make the same mistake he had made with Kikyo.
When he finally finds the house, Inuyasha groans internally. Â Figures, what is it with him and picking miko chicks! Â He touches down in a large old tree where he has a clear view of her window, well the one he assumes is hers based on the pink curtains and pulls out his cell phone.
Inuyasha texts Kagome, âwe need to talkâ
A few minutes later he sees her walk over to her desk and picks up her phone responding, âIâm fineâ
Inuyasha, âI know youâre notâ
Kagome, ââŚâŚ.â
Kagome, âhow would you know?â
Inuyasha, âI can see youâ
Inuyasha, âtreeâ
Kagome looks out the window just as Inuyasha hops down.
Inuyasha, âcome outside please, letâs talkâ
He sees Kagome turn away from the window as she sends a reply, ânoâ
âfine have it your way,â he responds and jumps through her window.
âWhat they hell?!â she immediately whirls around and starts hitting him. Â âI donât wanna talk, canât you take the hint?!â
âWell we need to talk,â he grabs her wrists. Â
The smaller girl doesnât have the strength to fight off his control, but it doesnât stop her from seething. âThereâs nothing to talk about Inuyasha. I get it, Iâm not your girlfriend, I have no right to be upset. Â Go back to that Kikyo woman since you both seem fond of each other. Â Iâll get over it.â
âAre you really that jealous of my ex? Â Okay I admit I was happy to see her but there is no way I want her back so thereâs nothing to be jealous of.â
Kagome rolls her eyes, âshe seems to have other ideas and itâs not like you were turning her down.â As if the timing couldnât be any worse, Inuyashaâs phone beeps with an incoming message. Â Her eyes narrow, âWell, arenât you gonna answer?â
âNo.â Â He sighs and letâs go of her wrists. Â âKagome,â he sits at the edge of her bed and hangs his head, âtruth is Iâm still not sure of what I really want.â Â She takes a seat at her desk as he talks, rubbing her wrists. âI mean I know I donât want her back, and even though I have some feelings for you, I donât know if, Iâm not sure if Iâm ready to be in any relationship is what Iâm trying to say.â Inuyasha makes eye contact again, âif you want me to block her I will just to make you happy. Â But if you were hoping I wanted to be your boyfriend, I canât say yes either right now.â
âI donât know what I want either InuyashaâŚ..â
~~ Â Â
It was just too awkward for them to work together alone anymore but the project still needed to be completed. Â They kept up a front in class and lied to Mrs. Taisho that Inuyasha was going over to Kagomeâs house afterschool on Fridays. Â But what was really happening is theyâd split the project, Kagome would finish the paper, and Inuyasha would complete the Powerpoint portion. Â The plan had been working for the past three weeks and paid off when theyâd successfully stood before the class and presented their project on Wind & Air Pressure Dynamics.
Just perfect, Kagome sighs as she took her seat again.  The project was over, only a week and a half left of school when they would be graduating then itâs off to college in the Fall.  Well, itâs not like she was leaving town but who knows, she side-eyes the hanyo on her left, maybe in the Spring Iâll enroll further away.  Stop it!  She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.  Being in the middle of class really wasnât the time to ruminate. Â
After the bell rings, he watches Kagome gather her belongings and shuffle out of class along with the other students. Â Inuyasha knew she was still upset, but he really didnât know what to do about it. This whole semester had gone from bad to amazing to crash and burn like a train about to run off its tracks and the stupid part is he really was the reason for every single rollercoaster hill. Ugh! Â Inuyasha drops his head onto the desk, ears flattened, with his fists clenched and claws digging into his palms. Â
âInuyasha,â Mrs. Taisho places a hand on the hanyoâs shoulder, âwhatâs the matter with you?â
âI fucked up big timeâŚâ he mumbles without raising his head, âagainâŚâ
âItâs about Kagome isnât it?â Â She sighs and takes a seat in one of the chairs. Â âI had a feeling that something wasnât right. Â Wanna tell me what happened.â
âNot really.â
âIt couldnât hurt. Maybe thereâs something I can help you with.â
Inuyasha sits up and looks at his sister-in-law Kagura for a moment, mulling over the decision. Eventually his shoulders droop along with his ears.  âAlrightâŚâ
Once he started, the words poured out. Â For about 30 minutes Kagura sat in silence while Inuyasha goes over everything that happened that night at Shiba Ramen and the subsequent weeks since then. Â His mind was settled on the Kikyo part, because she did try to rekindle things and heâd shot her down. Â Inuyasha knew in his heart the crush he had developed on Kagome was real and true, and that the only things keeping him from making the plunge was fear itself. Â He had jumped into a fast-blown relationship with Kikyo and it ended poorly, and that was certainly not what he wanted to happen again. Â Kagome was clearly a step above him and destined for better things. She was graduating near the top of their class and on her way to a great university while he had no idea what the next step was going to be beyond simply getting to walk the line. Â
âWhat good am I for someone like her, when the last thing she needs is someone that might hold her back.â
This was the first time Kagura had ever witnessed the hanyo break down.  Even after his mother passed away, while she assumed, he had shed a tear, it was never in the presence of another.  Inuyashaâs coping methods had been to clam up, grow moody, distant, and yet nowâŚ.  She was taken aback by how much of an effect one girl has had on him.  As much as the two rarely saw eye to eye, she found it almost amusing how so alike he and his brother really were. Â
âNever thought Iâd see the day that you would actually fear something.â Â She tries unsuccessfully to keep from chuckling. Â âThat girl has done what no one has ever been able to do and thatâs break through the wall you put up all those years ago. Â Are you really going to let your insecurities and fears of what could happen stop you from possibly gaining the best thing you might ever have in your life? Â Come now, Inuyasha, that doesnât sound like the hanyo Iâve come to know.â
âBut I donât know how to fix thisâŚ. How to talk to her againâŚ.â
âJust tell her, just like you told me,â she leans over and points at his heart, âfrom here. Â Find the right moment and just do it, but donât wait too long or she will slip through your fingers and you will regret it for the rest of your life.â
One thing was for certain, that night was the most restless night of his life.
âLucky to be hanyo,â he groaned as he sat through class the next day.  Morning wasnât so much the problem but after lunch it was becoming a semi struggle to stay awake which really sucked because he had to read a poem out loud in that class.  âAt least I got to go second. Maybe now I can relax.â  He almost fell asleep. Â
Kagome stood up for her turn and heads over to the front of the class, clutching to her paper. Inuyashaâs ears flick forward, but he keeps his eyes averted to his desk top. Â He doesnât see the slight, almost unnoticeable tremble in her fingers as she begins to speak. Â
Aww, fuck. Â By the end of the first line he knew this was gonna hurt. Â His eyes drift shut and all he could do was die a little more inside. Â Â Â
Her tone was smooth, her cadence slow as she channeled the very essence behind her poem.  It spoke of winter.  Of the fluffy white snow and how itâs beauty and elegance could mesmerize. Falling, softly, floating through the air like an angel to kiss your cheeks.  And on sunnier days, you could almost forget about the chill that winter brings when wrapped in such spellbinding charms.  But then the blizzard comes, cold and frightful. Blustery winds entrapping you behind walls that you cannot break free of, leaving you dark and alone⌠helpless. Praying for the snow to end its torture...            Â
All of the practice she had done in front of a mirror had paid off in keeping her from breaking down in the middle of the reading. Â And maybe in a way, it actually felt better getting it out. Â The poem was to let go of some of the pain so she could move forward. Kagome could see the effects it was having on Inuyasha. Â She couldnât lie that a small part of her wasnât happy to see him tormented. Â But that wasnât what she really wanted and as she sat back down and filed away her paper, the relief she had hoped for never came. Â Â
As soon as school let out, Inuyasha tracked Kagome down. Â He knew her class schedule, so it wasnât difficult, thought it seems she had planned to make a quick exit that day. Â By the time he saw her she was already walking out the front door. Â He pushes through the throngs of students all making their way toward the exit. Â Ugh! Â He wished the ceilings were higher so he could jump! Â
âKagome!â He screamed at her fleeting back, her legs carrying her away as swiftly as it could. Damn it! Â Once he was in the open, he threw out the rules against using their abilities on school property and made the leap. Â One bound, two bounds, pushing his legs as hard as he could. Â âKagome!â Â Oh, this woman! Â He was sure she could hear him calling her! Â One last jump and he lands ahead of her. Â She pauses briefly and shifts course down a small alley way. Â Inuyasha growls, and using a couple of walls, he manages again to get ahead of her, grabbing her arm before she could bolt again. âWoman, stop running from me!â
âLet me go Inuyasha!â She yanks at her arm, but his grip is too tight.  âIf itâs about the poemâŚâ
âIt is and it isnât,â he states matter of fact. Â âBut we really must talk, now.â Â Sweeping Kagome out from under her legs, he picks her up, holding on tight, and takes to the sky once more. Â She continues to cuss him out, but fear of falling keeps her from fighting his hold. Over rooftops and through alleys, staying out of the main thoroughfares, Inuyasha scans for an area with little to no humans around. Â He wanted privacy and finally finds it in Ueno Park. Â Â
âYou better have a damn good reason to have brought me so far away from home,â she spits out as she adjusts her clothing. Â Crossing her arms, âwhat do you want?â
âLook, I know I suck with words and I donât know how to⌠argh!â  he runs his hand down his face.  âOh, fuck it all!â Â
Just as Kagome is about to respond, Inuyasha grabs her by the waist and slams his lips against hers. âOof!â Her eyes expand and she goes stiff for a moment as her brain and body come to terms with what was happening. Even after he lets her go, she stares wide-eyed and speechless. Â Â Â
âPlease Kagome, Iâm sorry!â he blurts out. Â âIâm an idiot, I know Iâm an idiot. Â I was confused and I didnât wanna hurt you. Â I--I was afraid,â his ears droop and head hangâs low. Â âOkay, there I said it. Â I was afraid if I let you in, sooner or later youâd realize you deserved better than some lowly hanyo.â Â Â Â
Kagome blinks as her shaky fingers brush against her lips and her cheeks feel like they are on fire. âI-Inuyasha, wh-why would you ever think that?â Â Moisture floods her tear ducts, âyou are so much better than you believe to be.â Reaching up to caress his cheek, âI saw that with my own eyes, how you grew so much over this semester.â Â She smiles, âI got to see the real you come out and thatâs who I fell in love with.â
âBut, what ifâŚâ
âNo one knows the future Inuyasha, not even the Kamiâs themselves. Â We just have to keep walking forward.â Â She takes his hand. Â âCome on,â giving it a small squeeze, âhow about you start by making up for that Shiba date night with me?â
He groans, âthat doesnât mean with Sango and Miroku too, right?â
Kagome chuckles, âno, this time,â leaning in for a kiss, âlet it be just the two of us...â
The complete story for the Dragons Week 2019. Â Prompts in order: Kija, Shin-ah, Jae-ha, Zeno, Family Bonds, Old Gen vs new Gen, Future. Â ~~ breaks left in because Tumblr posts weird Â
AU story, Canon divergence. Each of them came from different backgrounds, but there was something that tied their lives together and, in the end, they learn how family meant much more than just by blood. Â Â
Donât get it wrong, Kija had a good life, great family, anything he possibly could need, but he was so⌠lonely.  Toyâs werenât much fun if you didnât have anyone to play with.  School was miserable when all the other kids were, well, stuck up. Sometimes he wished his parents would just send him to the local public school.  Whenever they passed by it, the kids in the playground looked like they were having so much fun!  And then he would arrive by chauffeured car to his private school, where all the kids had their noses in the air and were more interested in one-upping each other in who had the most of, whatever was the item of that day.  Kija wasnât like them at all.  Oh, he could act a bit on the spoiled side but, letâs just say, his personality was much more naĂŻve and preferred simpler things.
Their neighborhood wasnât much help in this regard, the other families with children around his age either attended his school or the matching girls one.  YeahâŚ. Life for Kija were days often spent with nannyâs trying to keep him entertained.  But he did have one saving grace.  Mr. Mundok down the street had taken in his grandson Hak just over a year ago and they were only one year apart in age.  Kija had heard his parents whispering about it at the time.  Father died while serving in the military overseas⌠mother couldnât handle the loss and took off leaving her son behind. That boy was sure lucky to have a grandfather to take him in. Â
Kija knew old mister Mundok because their families were acquainted and of course the idea that another little girl was always over at that house caught the boyâs attention too. At first Kija thought little Yona was the manâs granddaughter but turns out her father is an old business colleague. Not that young Kija cared about such details for the only thing that mattered was the blooming of hope and maybe friendship for a lonely child. Â And Yona was a total darling. Â There was just something special about her and she was turning into the little sister that Kijaâs parents never gave him. Â Â
But Hak, now there was a kid that wasnât the easiest to be around.  If he wasnât being moody or sarcastic with Kija, the boy would sometimes not talk at all preferring to tinker around with his grandfatherâs martial arts stuff rather than deal with people.  Mr. Mundok explained once that his grandson was still dealing with some of the things that happened and hopefully, heâd get better with people soon. By far, the best times was when Yona was visiting and the three of them hung out.  That girl had a knack for getting Hak to play with them no matter if he whined, heâd still do as she asked.  Yeah, the three of them was still a whole lot more fun than none and things were about to get even betterâŚ
~~
In another section of their vast metropolis, a young boy had glued himself into the corner of a closet. Â For all of his short life, the shy but astute child knew nothing of warmth or affection, just the bitter darkness that was his world. Â The few interactions he had with adults were mostly formalities, they fed and clothed him, taught him basic language skills but that was all, he didnât even know who he was for they only referred to him in pronouns. Â It was a strange life to say the least. Â They never harmed him, at least not physically laid a hand on him, but it was as if they didnât really want to touch him or get too close.
The sparsely furnished room was all he really knew about the world aside from the few storybooks that gave him a fantasy view of what might exist. 23 hours a day locked in with only a bed, a lamp, a desk with a chair and a handful of toys like a small bouncy ball that he had to play with quietly or risk getting yelled at.  Even at such a young age, he realized something was very odd about his circumstances, but he was too shy or scared to say anything like now as he huddled in the closet.  The weird chanting and sounds coming from the other room.  He could hear many adults talking⌠about him.
Look at his eyes, they are not normal. Â Evil. Â We have told you, he will grow up and bring anger from our Gods. Â We will not tolerate this blasphemy any longer, either you get rid of the spawn or you must leave our sanctity! Â
âShin-ah, Shin-ah wake upâŚâ
In a start, the young boy shrieks, scrambling over the bed and pressing himself against the wall with his eyes screwed shut.  He feels the bed shifting and a warm hand coming to rest on his knee.  A sweet girls voice breaking through his panicked mindâŚ. It was so soothingâŚ
âShin-ah itâs okay, was it that bad dream again? Â Youâre safe now remember, here at grandpa Mundokâs.â
Shin-ahâŚ. Thatâs the name she gave me when I got here.  He flashes back again to the river and tries to shake the memories out of his head.  That was 3 months ago.  Heâd been so scared when the adults yanked him out of the closet and left him near a river with nothing more than the clothes on his back.  After a day, starved and cold a passerby found him and took him to the authorities but with no way of identifying who he was, they placed him in this home for boys.  Thatâs where I am now. Â
He peaked out with one eye, and sure enough the angels voice belonged to Yona. Â Seeing him coming around she smiles and moves her hands to take hold of his. Â âItâs gonna be okay Shin-ah, no one will hurt you anymore, I promise.â Â There was still a lingering fear but so far, she had spoken the truth. Â It was all so different for him to go from a lonely existence to one where the people actually talk to him and make him feel wanted. Â He nods his head slowly and after Yona scoots off his bed, crawls back under his blanket. Â âGoodnight Shin-ah!â
As much as he didnât want to get his hopes up, the peace that little girl could always bring him began to lull him to sleep once more.  Maybe⌠maybe it will be okayâŚ
~~
âGet back here kid!â
There was no way Jae-ha was gonna let them catch him and take him back to that hell hole of a home. No thank you! Â He truly thought that no one would believe the stories of how he was beat and starved, shackled by a long chain to the wall heater so he couldnât escape. Â Freedom was what he craved for and it fueled his drive to break free. Â
Too bad freedom didnât come with a meal. Â
It had been a week now of playing cat-and-mouse with the authorities. Â But as his stomach growled, he stopped to looked around and realized he had wandered onto a street of affluent homes. Â Thievery was not something Jae-ha wanted to resort to, but what other options did he have? Â All the darkened homes, quiet while their occupants slept peacefully in beds. Jae-ha scoffed, lucky bastards. Â These were the kinds of people that could afford to share their food, right?
Picking the simple lock was the easy part and luck have it that the back door had led straight into the kitchen! Â Hallelujah! It was like sun rays shining down upon him as he opened the fully stocked refrigerator! Â
âShin-ah is that you raiding the fridge again?â Â The young boy freezes in place, slowly turning around to see another boy, slightly younger, rubbing his eyes and staring at him. Â âYouâre not Shin-ah, what are you doing with our fridge?â
âYoon, whatâs going on down there?â
Shit! Â Itâs an adultâs voice! Â Jae-ha glances at the back door. Â He could out run the kid, no problem and takes a step in that direction.
âAre you hungry?â Â The kitchen light snapping on causing Jae-ha to flinch again. Â He was busted, the older male was standing near the door now. Â Jae-ha presses himself against the counter afraid to say a word, studying the situation and looking for his way out. Â But again, the older gentleman asks the same question and this time Jae-ha is starting to notice the softness in the manâs tone. âBoy, I can see you must be starving. Yoon will you make him a sandwich?â
âSure, thing grandpa!â the other child ignores the fact that there is a stranger in the room and simply goes around focused on his task. Â
âMy name is Mundok, gramps to these boys.â Â He stays his ground near the door for now watching the frightened child. Â âIâm not gonna hurt you.â Â
Jae-ha was sure this was just a ploy to catch him so they could call the police.  Since when are people so kind?  He continues to watch the old man until the other child walks up and sticks the plate out to him.  âHere, you should eat.  It hurts when your stomach is empty, I know.â  Jae-ha looks at the plate, it did look so temptingâŚ.  âGramps isnât lying,â Yoon cut through the young boyâs thoughts. âHe ainât my real grandpa, just the guy that took me in.  Thereâs two other boys that live here too.â
âI can help ya boy, but you need to talk. Â If you ran away from home it was for a good reason, Iâm sure, cause no one runs away unless they got a dang good one.â Â He moves away from the door and takes a seat on the opposite side of the island counter. Yoon places the plate on the counter and fixes a glass of water too. Â âYoon, you should get to bed itâs late, but could you grab one of Hakâs outfits and bring it to me first, I think it would fit this young man.â Â Yoon nods and leaves the room on his task. Â Mundok chuckles, âYoon is such a great kid,â turning to look at Jae-ha who still hasnât moved a muscle, âhis family was too poor to care for him, so he had resorted to dumpster diving. Â I convinced the family to let me adopt him and brought him here.â Â
Yoon returns a few minutes later and places the shirt, shorts, and underwear on the counter before waving and skipping back upstairs. Â âTell ya what son,â the old man stands up slowly, keeping his hands resting on the counter, âIâm old and tired so Iâm gonna go back to sleep. Â You should eat so ya ainât starving tonight, take the clothes too and if you want,â he points to a utility room, âthereâs even a shower if you wanna use it.â Â Standing straight now, âstay, go, the choice is up to you, I wonât stop ya if you wanna leave.â Â Mundok starts to walk away, still talking as he does. Â He points to another room, âliving rooms got a couch if youâre tired,â waving without turning around, ânight kid.â
Was it really possible that this old guy was for real?  Jae-ha stares at the food, the clothesâŚ. He glances around the room as tears slowly trickle down his face⌠Â
~~
It was a little weird when he first moved in. Â Youâd think heâd be used to living in a house full of boys, but these werenât his relations. The old man that took him in, told him to call him gramps and think of this as his new family. Â Could he really do that? Â They were all younger than he was. Â The two oldest Jae-ha and Hak didnât seem very interested in getting to know him. Â Shin-ah, well that boy was just eerily quiet, but Yoon at least said hello. Â Â
Zeno knew that they often wondered about him, this aloof kid, how the hell could he smile after what happened to him?  To be honest, he wasnât sure either.  To the world, Zeno practically radiated sunshine but inside the nightmares still plagued with him, toying with his sanity.  Mundok had sat all the kids down, including Kija and Yona, like he always did when a new child joined the household and told them.  But the old man only gave them the info they needed⌠a lone survivor of a horrific car crash with no living relatives.  That was how the 11-year-old came to live with them.   Â
But Yoon knew the truth. The roommate heard the quiet sobbing or witnessed the sleepless nights and did his best to comfort his new friend. Both boys assumed gramps had designed it that way, pairing them up while putting Jae-ha and Shin-ah in the other room. That old man had a knack for tactical strategies and a gift for the human condition. Â Somehow, he just knew the young boy would provide a comforting shoulder without being laced with judgment. Â It came-in handy when once, after a pretty terrible nightmare Zeno confided that he felt bad for out living his other siblings or parents, that he couldnât understand what had made him special enough to survive.
That had to be tough to live with. Â
âThere must be a reason,â Yoon had pointed out that night, âlook at how much you make people smile around you Zeno, thatâs a pretty cool thing, I think. Â Thereâs so much bad stuff in this world, it needs people who can still be so happy.â Â
âHow are you so smart for an 8-year-old?â Â Zeno had sat back in his bed and laughed from the young boyâs serious expression.
Yoon had just shrugged,âthe library is free, so I spent a lot of time there.â
Zeno had settled under the covers at that point, âThanks, itâs nice having someone to talk to, makes me feel less lonely.â
âSame,â the boy smiled, âgood night Zeno.â
After a few months the nightmares fizzled away and while he still thought about his family, Zeno realized that he had been blessed with a new one. Â Three brothers had been lost, but even more gained plus a sister, and that made Zeno smile. Â He loved them all, even the sarcastic Hak. Â With Yona, it was absolutely wonderful having her around and while Kija didnât live there, he visited so frequently it was as if he was part of this mixed family unit. Â Zeno had gone from being the baby of the family to the eldest sibling. Â Â Â
As he looked around the dining table one evening, watching everyone laughing and talking about their day, he couldnât help but smile and believe it⌠ Maybe there was a reason after all.
~~
All the previous years had barely prepared them for this moment. Â They were better now and now it was their turn to be the strong ones. Â The six young men huddle around the young teenage girl as she stares at her fatherâs casket. Â Mundok places a hand upon her shoulder, âitâs gonna be okay Yona, weâll help you get through this. Â Iâll make sure your fatherâs business and legacy continues, I promise.â
Yona could only stare forward in disbelief.  Her hands hung at her sides, âBut I still donât understand w--whyâŚ.  How could he hurt my dad like that when he was just trying to do the right thing?â  She looks up at her best friend Hak who just stood to her side.  The whites of his knuckles, the scowl and narrowed expression⌠her dad had treated him like a son, so his anger made sense.  Yona tugged gently at his sleeve, âHak?â  He was so focused on the casket that it took a couple of pulls to gain his attention.  Â
When he finally turns and looks, to see her riddled with pain and eyes misted over, his heart clenches tighter along with his fists.  Yona didnât deserve this, that bastard!  How could he hurt his cousin like that! Her eyes crinkle at the corners causing the tears to pool in them.  Sheâd held back the tears but there was no stopping them now and in a surprising move she launches into his chest, buries her face into the fabric and hands gripping. It takes a couple seconds to register in the young man but when it does, he wraps his arms around the girl.  His anger swept away by the need to console her instead.
Each of the other five boys immediately moves in to embrace Yona until she was buried beneath a sea of arms and bodies. Â She was their little sister and big brothers protect little sisters. Â If she was in pain, they would be there for her, just like she had been for them years ago. Â Her sobbing continued but at a milder pace, tucked away in Hakâs arms and soothed by the rest of them. Â Kija, Yoon and Zeno, Shin-ah and Jae-ha all cooing and whispering their consolations. Â Â Â
There wasnât a dry eye to be seen. Â
Mundok simply stood back and watched it unfold.  He never imagined all those years ago when heâd taken the first child in, that this would be where his life would end up.  It warmed his aging heart, and in that moment, he knew they truly would be okay. All of those boys with heartbreaking stories of their own had come so farâŚ. They will be great men, he mused, no, they were already amazing young men. Bonded through adversity, they would stare down the future together in a way that was yet to be seen, but Mundok was certain, they would be victorious in wherever their paths led them to.    Â
After a few minutes, they untangle themselves and lead Yona to the seats that were set up for the family so the funeral could commence.  As she sat between them, Yoon held her hand on one side, Hak kept his arm around her from the other, and the other four sat behind like guardians. Mundok took a seat next to Hak and closed his eyes, âSheâll be okay Il, you rest in peace old friendâŚâ
A couple of weeks later the lot of them were busy at the Il family home, âHey gramps,â Hak points at the faded scroll painting hanging on the wall, âdo you know what thatâs from, even Yona had no idea about it.â
âItâs a cool painting,â adds Yoon, âit like one of those fairy tale fantasy stories or something.â
Mundok walks over, âah the Legend of the Five Dragons, itâs an old tale that supposedly took place over two thousand years ago here in Kouka. Â Iâm surprised you kids didnât learn about it in history class.â Â Taking the painting off the wall. Â âTell ya what, were almost done packing up this house, so when we get home, Iâll tell you guys the tale.â
It took them about a week to pack everything up, and six strapping young men sure made the move a lot quicker. Â Mundok made sure that anything of real value or sentiment was kept for Yona in the future, but he had made the difficult decision as executor to sell her family home and for her to move in with them instead. Â She understood, a house was just a house, but being with a family unit meant more. Â Mundokâs home was already bursting at the seams but in a couple of months a new room would be finished and until then she could stay in Hakâs room. Â
Once the final moving process was complete and they are hanging out after dinner, Mundok pulls out the scroll, laying it out on the table. Â âYou guys ready to hear the story?â Â The group nods, some leaning forward, others relaxing back in their chairs. Â âKija, you sure you can stay longer for this?â
âYeah, I told them Iâd be staying through dinner.â
Mundok sits back and crosses his arms, âOver two thousand years ago this place we now call Kouka was nothing more than a land filled with warring tribes consumed with taking control and ruling over the peoples. Â There was much bloodshed and chaos. Â From the heavens the Hiryuu dragon watched all of these events unfolding and it began to break his heart because he loved humans and wanted there to be peace. Â So, against the wishes of the other dragons he descended and took human form, even forgoing his powers to do what he could. Unfortunately, he was eventually caught and just before he was to be executed, the Hakuryuu, Seiryuu, Ryokuryuu, and Ouryuu dragons stepped in. Â They didnât want to see their beloved friend die so they made deals with four warriors to take their blood and a part of their powers on condition to protect Hiryuu for all time.â
He takes a drink of water before continuing. Â âWith the four dragon warriors at his side, Hiryuu was able to sweep through the lands and finally after many hard-won battles, united the peoples into one and Kouka was born. Â So, what do you guys think so far? Â Crazy or maybe it really happened?â
Hak scoffs, âthese were probably just skilled warriors that the people called divine because they couldnât explain how they were so good at what they did.â
âThat could be true,â the old man nods, âit is often a human trait to attach such supernatural powers to those that seem inhuman.â
âWell I think itâs still cool to learn about the past,â Yoon smiles, âplease continue gramps.â
Mundok grins, âI shall describe these dragons first starting with King Hiryuu.  They say he had purple eyes that shone bright with kindness and a personality to match, and yet his wavy red hair was seen as a raging inferno to his enemies ready to burn them to the groundâŚâ  Suddenly the room fell silent as all head turned to young Yona.
âWhoa!â Zeno sits straight up in his chair, âyou match the guy in the story Yona!â
ââŚHakuryuu was physically strong with the power to crush his foes with his bare hands.  But his hair was softer, like the white snows from the mountains and eyes as blue as a glacierâs ice reflecting the skyâŚ.â  Now all eyes switched to Kija.
ââŚSeiryuuâs powers were the most dangerous of all for he could prey on peopleâs minds and drive them crazy.  One look from his serpentine yellow eyes and the last thing they may remember is his blue hair swaying in the breezeâŚâ  By this point, the coincidences were starting to become quite eerie and Shin-ah shrank in his chair from the extra attention. Â
ââŚRyokuryuu,â Mundok chuckles, âthey say he was quite a character always sarcastic but very caring. He loved keeping his green hair up in a pony tail and legend has it his purple eyes were fond with the ladiesâŚâ Â
Jae-ha smirks and crosses his arms, âsound like a charmer to me.â
ââŚAnd finally, Ouryuu, the yellow dragon warrior with golden hair and a sunny disposition.  He was beloved by his fellow warriors and Hiryuu for he kept their spirits up even under the harshest of times.â
Unable to take the similarities anymore, âoh, this is some crap,â Hak waves an arm at the others in a fit, âhow come they get to look like some ancient warriors of heaven! Did you just make it all up?â Â
Yona places a hand on her friendâs shoulder, âitâs just a coincidence Hak, you donât need to get so upset over it.â
âYeah itâs just a story,â Yoon chimes in, âI ainât in it either but Iâm not mad. Â You can see five characters on the scroll too.â
But of course, the jokester of the group couldnât stay quiet. Â âAwww, poor Hak. Â Maybe youâre the Prince who sweeps in and steals one of Hiryuuâs daughters,â Jae-ha grins and gestures at Yona. Â âWe can call you the black dragon, since youâre always so moody.â
Mundok shifts in his seat expecting a fight to break out between the two boys.  But Hakâs face switches from anger to contemplation. Bringing a hand up to rub his chin, âI kinda like that⌠blackâŚ. Maybe the darkness dragon,â turning and smirking at Yona, âyeah⌠the one who wins the Princessâs heart.â  Groan erupt around the table while poor Yona is turning bright red.  Â
âOkay, okay,â Mundok cuts in, âso basically, after uniting the kingdom, peace reigns, everyone lives happily ever after, the end.â
âWait thatâs it?â Kija questions.
âWell considering there wasnât anything of significance to happen since then, what else is there to tell?â Mundok counters. Â âThe rest seems even more farfetched.â
âWeâre listening,â Hak retorts.
âOkay fine, they say that the warriors had lived on, that their blood would be passed down along the generations and that one day a reincarnation of Hiryuu would bring them together once more.â
âTch,â Hak leans in, âold man what do you think this is?â Gesturing around him, âreincarnation,â he points at Yona, âfour warriors,â he points at the other boys, âyou think this is a farfetched?â Â
How many seasons have come and gone before this moment? Â While never forgotten, the years since the accident have become a distant memory and so many wonderful new ones have taken their place. Â Â Â
âNext we have our Philosophy majorsâŚâ
Zeno stood from his seat and followed behind the other students waiting in line for their diplomas. One by one their names are read as they stepped onto the stage and as his was called, shouts rang out from the stands.
âZENO!!!! ZENO!!!!! Â ZENO!!!â
His brothers and sister screaming and waving with banners.  Zeno chuckles when he sees gramps flashing away with a camera as he accepts his degree.  He shifts the tassel over and raises the diploma case above his head.  It was a proud moment for not just him but his family, all of them.  For the brothers and parents, he lost, and the siblings and father he gainedâŚ
âFirst of us to graduate!â Jae-ha claps Zeno on the back. Â âHow does it feel old man?â
With tears streaming down his face and a babbling wreck, âMy boy!â Mundok hugs Zeno tight. Â âIâm so proud of you!â
Hak rolls his eyes, âGeez gramps the water works, you gonna do this every single time one of us walks the line?â
âDamn straight I am!â Mundok wipes away the tears. Â
Zeno smiles, âThanks!â his eyes crinkling at the corners. Â âIâm glad I have you all here to share this moment with.â
âLast of us guys to move in, first of us to move on huh,â Jae-ha quips.
âWeâll miss you when you leave,â adds Kija.
âNope,â Zeno hugs the diploma to his chest, âIâm a homebody, so Iâm not leaving anytime soon, Iâd miss you guys too much.â
âAww, youâre such a dork Zeno,â Jae-ha rubs his head, messing up his hair. Â
For the next few minutes the boys joke around and chatter together sharing in some hugs, and a few more tears. Â Mundok hangs back with the widest grin still plastered on his face. He knew it was only a matter of time before one by one they will move on in their lives but that was okay. Â Yoon came starved and now look at him healthy and fit. Â Kija was such a lonely child and yet here he was laughing with life-long friends.
Shin-ah, sweet Shin-ah was still quiet, but heâs come so far from the emotionally bereft child he once was to one who could now be in the middle of a crowd without running away. Jae-ha, the problem child who swore to never be tied down. Â Mundok had a feeling he might end up being the last to leave the house. Â Then there was Hak and Yona and a knowing smile crosses his lips. Â Those two still hid their feelings, but as anyone watched them, like now, he stood with his arm around her shoulders as she leaned in to him. Â One day they would provide the next generation of the Son family.
Mundok thinks back to the dragon lore, wouldnât it be crazy if it had come true? Â Laughter rings in his head. Â And why not? Â They were like a modern-day version, he mused. Â
âHey boys,â gathering them back together, âletâs get a picture then we can head on home for a small party.â
âWhoo hoo! Food!â Â Shin-ah starts to sneak away.
âOh no you donât,â Jae-ha grabs his brother and pulls him to his side as the others bunch together in front of the camera.
It is summer break before Identical twins Andesine & Azurite Fernandez will be leaving for college on opposite sides of the country. Their family takes their annual summer vacation to the mountains but both brothers are troubled about breaking their connection. Â â
The breeze coming off the crystalline lake was something Azurite Fernandez always appreciated when they visited the summer cabin. Â It had that typical rustic quality of earthy scented pine, mixed with warbling birds and chattering squirrels, a beautiful serenity and today was no exception as the warm kiss of mountain sunlight blanketed the family from powder blue skies. He stood there with his eyes closed letting the calming peace and quiet sweep him away for it might be years before heâd be back again. Â This was perfect, he mused to himself. Â Someday building a house and raising a family in a place like this appealed to his inner nature.
âAzurite, could you help your sister with her bags?â
He opened his eyes and released the fresh moist air from his lungs, âsure mom,â before turning towards his familyâs SUV. Â Azi clicked his tongue, chuckling as his sister struggled with her oversized suitcase. Grabbing it from her and setting it on the ground he teases, âdid you pack your entire room?â
Amethyst huffs, picking up her smaller carry-on and purse from the ground, ânot all of us loves this place as much as you do, I needed things to keep me busy.â Â
âIâm with Amy on this,â their brother Andesine, Aziâs twin, throws his arm over his brotherâs shoulder. âIâd much rather be hanging out with Sage and the others, considering most of us are going to different parts of the country in a couple months.â
âTch,â Azurite crosses his arms, âthen I would just as much prefer to spend time with my girlfriend then you.â
âAlright, alright boys,â their father Jellal chides them as he walks past into the house, âitâs family time, not friend time so just deal with it and make your mother happy for a couple of weeks.â Â With a sigh, Azurite simply grabs his sisterâs suitcase and along with his sullen siblings makes their way into the house behind him.
That evening as Andi and Amy hole up in their rooms with their phones or laptops, and their parents enjoy the rest of the night in the den, Azurite ventures out onto the spacious wrap around deck, propping himself atop a railing. Â With his long legs easily balancing on the beam and his back against one of the pillars, he had chosen the spot because it was a clear vantage point of the nighttime lake. Â Dark and ominous waters like at any moment some creature could walk out of its depths ready to strike at the unaware and yet, with the shimmering moonlit surface, instead of a creature, maybe a beautiful water goddess come to grant you any wish you desire. Â A slight uptick around the corners of his mouth are the only indication when a few fond memories begin to flow through. Â
Such supernatural creatures were common topics when they were little. Â Nights like this one spent on the shore sleeping under the stars, trading story ideas, or dreams of heroes and villains come to life. Â Just a lot of imagination packed between the Fernandez twins and the seeming link they shared was evident. Â One would start a sentence and the other would finish it, an idea for a character would come to mind and the other would simply nod and agree as if they could see it too. Â Like words never spoken aloud but through the spirit became secrets only they could share driving their sister crazy because it left her out of the loop.
They used to love fishing with their father, sometimes competing with each other on who could catch the biggest fish, campfire smores with their mom who made sure they didnât burn their hands, and tag teaming scares upon their little sister. Â On sunny afternoons the boys would swim out to the middle of the lake where a platform had been anchored, jumping off or sun bathing. Â Hikes with the family in the surrounding forests were a treat to find bugs and other critters or make forts amongst the trees to search for dragons. Â
It was quite an enjoyable childhood, but like many kids, as they got older, and their individual personalities developed, different interests and friendships pulled them in separate directions. Â They were still brothers that got along for the most part, but no longer peas in the same pod. Â Azurite closes his eyes, âand the distance is only gonna grow wider when we leave for college.â Â It wasnât that he wanted to be separated from his brother or family, but when one receives a full-ride scholarship to M.I.T, theyâd be a fool to decline. Unfortunately, that meant heâd be attending school in Massachusetts clear across the country from Santa Barbara where Andesine had opted to go.
âWill you cheer up Az?â the warm hand of his brothers upon his shoulder, rouses Azurite from his reflections only to look over and see the smug smirk of his twin staring back. Andesine taps his temple, âis the distance really bothering you that much, cause ya know eventually we had to cut the cord.â
âI wasnât thinkingâŚâ Again, Andi taps the side of his head and cocks an eyebrow.  âOkay, sure, maybe I was but that wasnât the only thing.â
âAâŚâ searching his pockets, he pulls out the only thing he had and holds it up with a goofy grin, âpiece of gum for your thoughts?â
Even Azurite had to laugh at the silly antics of his twin, âItâs nothing,â waving his hand, âmaybe Iâm just nervous about being so far away from everyone. Â I mean, arenât you?â
âMmm,â Andi tips his head, ânot really, kinda excited to see all them California girls!â singing out part of the Katie Perry song.
Azurite rolls his eyes, âYou are so bad!â
âAnd you are too good!â Andi retorts and laughs out loud, âI feel like I need to balance out this dynamic duo!â  Azurite tries to hide the amusement but fails miserably since his brother can read him. âCome on⌠grumpy gus,â he playfully punches Aziâs arm, âjust get some sleep and maybe youâll feel better.â
After his bother moves out of the way, Azi slides off the railing and stretches out his stiffened back. âMom guys crash yet?â
Andesine nods, âfell asleep on the couch. Â I think Amy too, cause her light was off.â Â He pulls out his phone, âI donât think you realize but youâve been out here for several hours, see,â showing his brother the time, âitâs almost 2 am.â
Azi frowns, âI didnât. But why are you still awake?â
âI wasnât, just woke up when I felt something bothering you.â
âSorry.â
ââsoâkay man, Iâll see ya upstairs.â
âBe there in a minute.â Azurite watches his brother walk back into the house and takes one more look at the lake...
To the outside world, Andesine Fernandez was the quintessential jokester who never took life seriously.  He did decently in school, had his own aspirations, tons of friends, and fashioned himself a ladyâs man, though this last notion might be more in his head than reality.  But just because he lived in the realm of humor, wasnât to say he didnât care or pay attention, he simply preferred to live by the YOLO âYou Only Live Onceâ motto.  This stark contrast in personality from his more reticent and bookish twin, was along with their different colored hair, the most noticeable distinctions. Â
A few nights later, the family sits around a small campfire in front of the house, relaxing after a long day of hiking around the forest and lake. Â Amy and their mother Erza chatter about a Korean drama they both watch, and Andi is only half listening to Azurite and their dad discuss the latest MMA fight in the UFC. Â Maybe Azi had a point about the distance, it wasnât something heâd really thought about until now, probably because, well, âI didnât want to, I mean, itâs only a physical thing!â Â But as the dancing flames of the fire crackle and send wisps of burning embers floating into the air, Andesineâs thoughts go with them. His eyes dilate, focusing on the red-orange glow, mesmerized and sending his mind into a distant timeframe.
âDonât even think about it, Andi,â his brother blocks him, âmom already gave you a Hershey.â
âUgh! Â Itâs so irritating that you know what Iâm thinking! Â When we get older, I hope this stupid twin thing stops too!â
âI donât really like it either, cause dealing with you is frustrating.â
But their mother had stepped into the argument, chiding her sons, âthere will come a day when youâll regret saying that stuff.â Â Pulling them into a hug on each side of her body, âthat special bond means youâll always have each other to fall back on, even when youâre far apart.â
âWhy would be far apart?â Azurite asked their mom.
âWellâŚâ squeezing them tighter, âone day youâll grow up, go to college, meet a girl, maybe settle down and have a family.  As much as Iâll miss my boys, I want you to be happy and independent in the future.â
âSounds good to me,â Andi shrugged, âI canât wait to grow up!â
She chuckled, âdonât worry, before you know it, you will beâŚâ
Andesineâs brows furrow at the memory, sometimes he hated to admit when their mother was right, but damn was she ever. Â A night exactly like this one, settled around a campfire, eating smores, except now they were all ten years older. Â Amy only two years away from graduating high school and the boysabout to start their adult lives. Â Was he really ready for it like he had bragged about? Â Did he want to admit that heâll miss his twin? He snaps out of the reflection, looking around to see if anyone had noticed it, but everyone was still engrossed in their conversations.
He stands up, dusts off his pants and kisses his mother goodnight. Â âAre you okay?â she asks.
âJust tired, think Iâll shower and head to bed.â
âAlright, good night sweetie.â
âNight mom.â
He knew from experience that the best thing to do was let his brother process whatever was bothering him in his own way, so Azurite pretended not to pay attention while Andi zoned out or even when he said he was tired. Â But as he watched his twin trudge into the house, he had to wonder what it was about. Â A smug tugging on his lips, could Andi be just as nervous as he was about the whole separation? Â Now that would be an interesting flip.
Andesine tossed and turned.
âNoooo!!!â he screamed as he raced towards his brother on legs that suddenly seemed uncooperative, reaching out and stumbling along the asphalt. The scene blurred through a tunneled vision while the sounds of screeching tires echoed in his ears. Â But no matter how fast he ran, the distance remained the same. Â
His brotherâs head turns seconds before the impact, a tear trailing down one cheek, âIâm⌠sorry AndiâŚâ
âAzzziiiiiii!!!!!â
Andesine pops up in his bed screaming out of the dream and frantically looking at the other side of the bedroom for Azurites bed. Â âWhat the fuck?â Â Because there was no bed, only an empty space where it should be. Â He throws off the blankets and hops off his, wildly circling the barren floorboards. Â âWhat the hell is going on! Â Where is Azurite?!â
The door swings open and his parents rush in, âAndi, whatâs wrong,â Erza asks, âwhat are you yelling about?â Â As Jellal grabs his sonâs shoulders to stop his hysterical flailing, âdid you have a bad dream?â
âWhereâs my brother Azurite? Â Why is his bed gone?â Â The poor young man is on the verge of tears.
âAzurite?â Erza questions, looking to her husband with concern, âbut honey, you donât have a brother.â
âWhat!! Â Of course, I do, heâs my identical twin!â
âSon, you need to calm down,â prompting the young man towards his bed and sitting him down, âthereâs only you and your sister, remember?â
âNo, this doesnât make any sense,â Andi shakes his head, âit felt so real, He felt so real!  W-we were so close, we could feel each other, read each otherâs thoughts, IâIâŚâ cradling his head in his hands, âbut ourâŚâ
âSweetheart it was just a dream,â Erza kneels in front of him, âwe promise you, youâve never had a brotherâŚâ
âNo!â he pushes them away and scrambles to get out of the room. This was all wrong! Â Why were they lying to him? Â There was no way heâd just make up a brother! Â Andi bolts down the hallway, stumbling a few times in an effort to reach the front door while the walls seemed to sway and fold inwards on him. He had to get out there now!
As he turns the knob and flings the front door open, a blinding light stops him in his tracks.
His eyes snap open and he sits up in bed.  âWhat theâŚâ turning, Andesine looks to his left and notices his brother still asleep in their darkened room.  He checks the alarm clock, 3:30am, it was all just a nightmare?  With a groan, he drops on to his back, âit was all just a friggen nightmare!â
The following morning, Andesine is still a bit unnerved from the dream. Â It was the first time heâs ever had one so disturbing involving his brother and he couldnât fathom what it was supposed to mean. Â Was it a premonition that his brother would die from a car accident? Â Heâd never had one of those before, or more than likely a subconscious reaction to the whole idea of separation and distance. Â No matter what it all meant, if he didnât get a handle on these emotions, the rest of this trip would be a miserable one.
Andi finds his parents in the kitchen cleaning up after breakfast, âIs it okay if I take a hike to the bluffs?â
âI donât see why not,â Jellal puts another dish in the rack before turning to address his son, âis Azurite going with you?â
âNah, I kinda wanted to go alone.â
Erza frowns, âThatâs not really safe honeyâŚâ but when he gives her a sad, puppy expression she sighs, âjust make sure you take your phone with you.â
âThanks mom!â he hugs her then his dad and takes off out the door with a small back pack of water and of course his cell phone. Â
He waves at his sister and brother who were lounging on patio chairs and heads north of their rental towards the trail leading up to a mountain peak he enjoyed.  Andi takes a deep breath, âImâma sort out whatever the hell it is thatâs bugging me!â pumping a fist into the air with a grin, âItâs time to go zen!â
The trail itself was moderately rated, mostly because of the final leg up a steep incline to the bluff, but it was completely worth the effort. Â Twenty-five minutes later, as he broke through the tree line and made his way up the final ascent, Andi knew he had made the right decision to come here. There were a few fluffy white clouds passing by and the heat was mildly tolerable due to the higher elevation. The ground was thankfully dry since it hadnât rained for at least a couple of weeks and the bugs seemed to be taking a day off, so he finds a flat-topped rock and sits down ready to get this load off his mind.
Why was all of this bothering him so much now when it hadnât even crossed his mind before this trip? Sure, he had realized that picking a college thousands of miles across the country would probably make his parents sad, but it never donned on him that it would upset his brother, or himself. They would be in different states not different countries and thanks to todayâs technology, distance wasnât such a burden anymore. Â Andi had friends all over the world on social media, and he was excited to finally meet a few of them when he got to California. Â Besides, itâs not like he was the only one, Azurite chose a college away from their home state, granted it was because of the scholarship, but still, it was a choice that he made.
Andi closes his eyes and tilts his head back knowing he was skirting around the real issue that none of this had to do with a normal leaving the nest syndrome. Â He exhales, both brothers were quite ready and capable to venture out on their own because their parents had done a phenomenal job of making sure they would be. Â No, this all came down to their twin connection. Â Will it feel weird when they are so far apart from each other? Â Will there be some strange feeling like a part of him was missing? Â It was this uneasiness that was at the heart of it all. Â
âIâm sure weâll be fine,â he finally concludes, ânothing to worry about. Â I bet weâll be too busy with college and everything to even worry.â He was sure that heâd simply let his subconscious and imagination run a little too amok this time and it was time to reign it back in. Â
âYosh!â he stands up, stretching out in a full, arms above his head motion, twisting his midsection and legs. Â âBout time for lunch anyways!â
In a better mood now, Andi slings his backpack over one shoulder, shoves in his earbuds and cranks up his music, starting the trek down the steep zig-zag trail of loose stones and dry pine needle covered dirt. Â Dense foliage made a few portions along the path harder to make out and unfortunately one of those spots was a narrow, stepped ledge, carved by the elements into a natural staircase. Â Andi slowed down because he knew going down was the most dangerous part. Â
Suddenly, the flapping of wings and a stirring of feathers from a startled pheasant takes Andi by surprise just as he is about to set foot on the next step.  The bird scuttles off into the forest, its squawking mixing with his scream as he slips, hands flying up, bag along with his legs going airborne like in a slow-motion scene.  His brotherâs name is the last thought in his mind as his back hits the ground and head bounces-off the stony surface knocking him out coldâŚ
Down at the lake, the family is relaxing near the waterâs edge with Amy and Erza sunbathing on the shore. Azurite and Jellal dangle their legs off the short pier fishing for dinner while discussing last minute things the young man needs to secure before he leaves for college. Â All in all, a relaxing sight despite the glaring midday sun. But just as Azi casts his line again, a cold breeze sweeps through, normally welcomed on such a heated day, but for him, the chill it shoots up his spine catches him off-guard and if he didnât know better, his name had been funneled along with the wind. Â
The fishing pole he holds clatters to the ground as Azurite shoots to his feet, âSomethingâs wrong with Andi!â
Jellal looks up bewildered, but knows not to question it, âweâd better go then!â
The two men race up the forest trail while Amy and Erza wait at the house ready to call emergency if necessary. Â They had no idea what they would encounter but if Azurite was right, and Andi was too injured to have used his cell phone to call for help, they needed to be on standby. Azurite tore up the path like a man both panicked yet guided straight to where he just knew his brother would be and his father simply following, trusting his sonâs instincts. Â It took them 15 agonizing minutes to reach the spot.
âAndi!â Â Azurite clambers up the steep grade, crawling the last couple of feet to where his brother lay prone. Â Panic sweeps over his whole being, âAw, Fuck dad thereâs blood coming from his head! Â Andi!â heâs about to reach out and pull his brother up but Jellal grabs his shoulder.
âDonât move him yet, we donât know how badly injured he is.  Check his pulse and breathing while I call your mom⌠and see if you can wake him up but gently.â
With his father on the phone telling their mother to call 911 and giving them directions to where they were, Azurite is using every ounce of willpower he has not to cradle his brotherâs limp body in his arms. Â He couldnât believe this was happening, Andi was usually so careful whenever he went hiking but as he scans the area and notices a few stray feathers and his brothers bag lying above and off to the side, he could surmise what had happened in those last seconds. Â But all that didnât matter, whether or not Andi had been spooked or simply slipped, what was important was getting him medical attention as quickly as possible.
Azurite pats his brotherâs cheek, âAndi wake up! Â Please,â tapping it a few more times, âwake up Andi!â Â Moisture pools and clouds his vision, tears leaking down his face in salty rivers. Â âDamn it, Andi wake up!â
After ending his call, Jellal slowly lifts his sons head to check the injury and seeâs that despite the blood, the wound doesnât look very deep. Â He pulls off his shirt, folds it, and tucks it under to cushion Andiâs head. âEmergency services are on their way so, all we can do is wait. Â Iâm going to head back down to meet them at the beginning of the trail, will you be alright here?â Â The young man manages a short nod. Â Jellal puts his hand on Aziâs shoulder, âItâs going to be okay son,â and with a second half nod, the man starts his descent.
Left alone, Azurite retrieves his brotherâs bag, so it didnât get left behind, sitting back down and checking his brotherâs vitals every couple of minutes. Â It was so frustrating not being able to do anything more, but his dad and their Eagle Scout training were clear on this, Andi was best left for the professionals to handle. Â He hangs his head and while his tears had slowed, they were still like droplets of rain along a window pane, dribbling down in irregular waves.
âI swear you really are an idiot Andi, you know how dangerous it is to hike alone!  I donât know what it was that was bothering you, but it better be a damn good reason for scaring me half to death!  Do you know how it feels, every time you do these foolish things and I have to worry about youâŚâ  Azi lets out a long exhale, âBut maybe youâll get it now?  I hope youâll see why I was so worried about the distance, I mean if something happened to you and weâre miles apart, I canât come running like I did today.â  He lays down on his side next to his brother, just like they would as little kids when they were scared during a storm and takes hold of his brotherâs hand, so limp and lifeless, bringing it to his chest.  âIt feels like⌠like a sinking weight on my heartâŚâ
âCould you beâŚâ Andiâs voice is groggy and muffled, âanymore⌠melodramaticâŚâ  He squeezes Aziâs hand back, âI ainât dead yet.â
âI oughtâa knock you back out for that!â Azi half snorts half laughs, for as frustrated with his brother as he was, it felt amazing to hear Andiâs voice again.
âI love you too bro,â he finally opens his eyes, half lidded because of the pain. Â âAnd to answer your question, I do know how it feels.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI had the most screwed up dream last night, thatâs why I came out here to think⌠ I dreamt that I suddenly woke up and you werenât there, mom and dad told me I had dreamt you up.  It hurt so bad like something had been ripped out of meâŚâ  Azi looks up when he hears the sounds of footsteps approaching but is drawn back as he brother keeps talking.  âI do worry too but today I realized that itâs going to be okay.â  He squeezes his brotherâs hand again and closes his eyes, grimacing through the pain, âweâll always be brothers, and even if weâre far apart nothing will ever change the bonds we share.â Â
âJust promise me you wonât do anything crazy out in California, because if I have to fly there, I really will kick your ass.â
Andi tries to chuckle but gives up when another wave of throbbing pain rushes over him, âyou could try...â Â
On the final night of the family vacation, Amy and their parents lounged on the porch playing a board game while the two brothers settled on a log beside the lake shore. Andesineâs head was still wrapped with gauze to protect the stitches he received, and Azurite was teasing him. âRemember,â Azi turns his gaze over to the lake, âWhen a full moon casts its luminous glow beckoning to any fools that dared to breach its darkened watersâŚâ
â⌠a creature may arise to strike you down, or maybe a beautiful goddess will appear to grant you your desires.  Forgive me but I donât think I qualify as a goddess.â
âYouâre right, youâre more like a creature from the abyss.â
A companionable silence falls between them, each lost momentarily as the placid nighttime waters soothes their psyches. Â Azurite exhales and holds up his arm in a 90-degree position, Andesine sighs, grabs his brotherâs hand, squeezing and nodding his head for their zero degrees of separation. Â This trip had been long and fruitful and now they were finally ready to move into the next phase of their lives, together.
Hak could do nothing but stare at the woman standing at the crest of the hill, his eyes, his expression filled with such a range of emotions he couldnât begin to feel them all, but one thing was for certain, he was proud of her. Â Below their group ranged an army that would scare even the most seasoned of soldiers and yet she stood poised, invincible and as unyielding as the heavenly ball of flames that blazed behind her. Â
Shoulders squared, unwavering, a bow in her right hand, an arrow held in the left, all he could think about was how beautiful his Princess looked against the setting sun, its light bathing her in the dark oranges, brilliant yellows, and her red hair blending in... Â It had to strike fear in the soldiers below because Yona looked like she was on fire. Â Â Â Â Â Â
They were all mesmerized by the sight. Â
Her beloved dragons that first followed because of an ancient tie to a long dead King now risen to her call based on the power of the Princess alone. Â They fought and would fight till the death to save their Queen. Â Yoon, the young boy who was nothing like the warriors that flanked him, could stand proud with her, a confidence and a desire to make a difference in a world still full of pain and suffering. Â Yona was their strength, she was their passion, and she was their heart. Â
But what of the former general, the childhood friend that had watched over this girl for so long he couldnât remember a time before it, both as a playmate and one who had pledged to his King he would guard the Princess with his life. Â Hakâs loyalty to Yona had transcended that of a mere request long before the formal one had even been made, though when he probably couldnât tell you. Â Only his heart knew the truth.
What he did know, better than anyone alive, was the woman in front of him is the only one heâd ever love. Â Sheâd always been beautiful and sweet, naĂŻve but loving, Princess or not Yona could have had any man she desired. Â Her younger self did drive him crazy, the spoiled darling of the castle who knew nothing of pain or regret until that day that shattered not just her world but the country and how it broke her. Â It killed him inside to watch her suffer while grappling with his own anger, he couldnât fathom the level of betrayal that Soo-Won had brought upon them and he worried that sheâd never recover.
But she did, and with a vengeance. Â
A force arose from that sweet little girl that sent shivers down his spine every time he thought about it.  To think that Yona had such a spirit within her, it was heartbreaking that it took a devastating event to pull it out but once it was set free⌠ If at any point he had questioned his loyalties or his desires for her, they were cast aside the second she held his hand at the edge of that cliff desperate to save him.  She had drawn a sword, she had cut her beautiful hair, and held that blade to Tae-jun with such furor in her eyes.  Yes, in that moment he knew, heâd never love another woman for the rest of his life. Â
And those yearnings only grew over their time together as he watched her blossom into the woman now standing upon this hill. Â She was still so very fragile, and it quickened his heart every time they faced danger, scared him to death that she would fall, or he wouldnât be fast enough to save her. Â But in that same moment, the swell of adoration and utter love for her deepened. Â She held his heart, she was his home, and only death would ever separate them if it dared, just not today. Â
The soldiers began to shift, and murmuring filled the air as one by one, Hak and the others took their places alongside Yona. Â Rumors now fact in the eyes of these men caused wavering amongst the ranks, it was true, the legends, the stories they had grown up with were standing before them in the flesh. Â The Four Dragons, the swords and shield as prophesized returned to this world and their Princess really might be the Crimson Dragon reborn. Â Tales had also spread far and wide of their exploits, through town and after town, fighting against the wrongs, helping the sick and needy. Â
The tide was shifting, and hope began to spread throughout.
Yona stood upon the precipice of this change with the grace of a Queen and strength of a ruler.  A force to be reckoned with, an unstoppable power with the backing of the Gods to bring peace to their kingdom and they would follow her, Hak will see his Princess to her rightful place among the legendsâŚ
It has been about a month since Natsu and Lucy have officially become a couple when Lucy goes out on a mission with Shadow Gear and comes back a little worse for wear. How will the over protective dragon handle it?
@cosmicdragonwizard
Sorry yaâll, tech support is supposed to be working on the glitches if you are reading this on the site. but it should look normal once you click the Keep Reading. It seems to be fine if using the app. Thanks for your patience
To say he was angry was like saying his battle against his brother had merely been sibling rivalry gone just a little askew, no Natsu was furious, livid, hell there wasnât a word yet created to describe how he felt when Lucy walked into the guild hall. Â He was already irritated that she had been gone on the week-long mission with Shadow Gear without him but had relented at her and Levyâs persistence that it would be a simple, no danger involved, weâre just gonna translate and catalog for the Magic Library some new materials they had received request. Â
And now he stood there, heat waves flaring off his body, mid-transformation, staring at his mate with a swollen lip, black eye, and limping as she desperately tried to calm him down, begging, pleading that it really wasnât that bad, it was no ones fault that a shelf decided to break under the weight of ancient manuscripts at the same moment she had been adding to itâs volumes. Â
She was using every trick she had gained in all her years of knowing the slayer, all her skills to tame and soothe the demon back into submission and it was slowly working, first the reversal of his physical changes, then gradually his temperature began to come down. Â Almost ready to take a sigh of relief thatâs then it happened, of all the times to add to her dilemma now, when she had finally got Natsu to calm down! Â She sneezed. Â And not just one of those cute, something tickled her nose sneezes, but a loud, mucus driven, no air left in your lungs expulsions when youâre suffering from a cold. Â Twice. Â
He roared and surged again towards the cowering guild mates that he blamed for her condition, she pushed desperately against his frame, bracing him from moving forward, and now Gajeel and Gray had joined to hold him back.
âPlease Natsu!â her tears are streaming at this point of desperation.  âItâs nothing Wendy or Porlyusica couldnât fixâŚâ but before she can finish the growl he emits sends chills down her spine.
âThey arenât here!â
âW-What?â she stops pushing.
âThey left yesterday and wonât be back for at least a week!â tugging harder at the arms holding him, âdamn it let me go you bastards!  Gajeel you know damn well if it were Levy youâd beâŚâ
âOh, donât lump me into this, Salamander,â the iron slayer only tightens his hold, âYes Iâd be pissed but I got more brain cells to know this ainât worth killing over.â
âCome on man,â Gray tries to reason with him, âLucy will be fine, sheâs tough, just some good âole rest and patching up and sheâll be good to go. Â Cause we ainât letting ya go till you calm the fuck down!â
âFuck you!â
Lucy letâs out a long, drawn out exhale to calm herself down.  The team had known Porlyusica was not home since they stopped there first, knowing this is exactly how Natsu was going to respond.  They had even checked Fairy Hills for Wendy, but she too had not been home, and theyâd hoped sheâd simply be at the guild; well now they know why.  Just Great.  The spirit mage knew she really wasnât as bad as he was acting like she was, damn it she wasnât a porcelain doll, and she understood his possessive side which had only grown worse after consummating their bond, but still⌠ Another exhale, she needed to get him settled down again, this was her problem, her duty, not the guilds. Â
With the two men holding her mate firmly enough, Lucy cups his blazing cheeks and forces him to look at her directly. Â She holds his gaze, searching, imploring, his emeralds still fiery as they melted her chocolate hues, moisture teeming again, her lips part, sweeping into a smile and voice is soft, gentle like a delicate flower petal despite the sniffles she was holding at bay. Â âNatsu,â kissing his lips ever so tenderly, âMy love, my mate, I need you to come back to me. Â If Wendy is not here I will need your help until I feel better. Â Please?â Â
His head lowers and rests against her forehead as his body stills.  Oh, Mavis he was still livid, but she was right, he need to take care of his responsibilities, and Lucy was his priority not these idiots around him; he could beat them up a little later; a twitch of his lip at that last thought.  Finally, itâs his turn to exhale and relax his body.  âAlrightâŚâ
She tilts his head back up and kisses him again, âTake me home, dragon.â
~~
First things first, he leaves her next to the tub to strip while he runs a bath for his mate and gathers other necessities. Â As the water fills he checks her over more closely and aside from the black eye and lip that is less swollen than it was earlier, noting bruises on her side over her ribs and likely the bones themselves where the shelf had come to land, and the ankle that was inflamed and would need to be wrapped, received as she tried but failed to get out of the way. Â Another round of sneezes. Â Now that was another issue. Â With her energy reserves lowered, catching a cold on their way back was a new problem developing quickly and just in the half hour from when they had met up at the guild, the congestion had gotten worse, and was well on its way towards the next symptom. Â
Body sore all over, all she wanted to do was unwind in a nice hot bath with her man, so after scrubbing their bodies and rinsing, he picks her up and lowers them both into the steaming waters, settling the blonde between his legs and keeping his arms around her waist, careful against her bruises. Â It felt so good, her wispy sighs convey as she relaxes against his chest, all the aches and pains, the memories of that stupid mission dissolving away into the water molecules that surrounded them. Â
It had only been a month since they had gone from friends to lovers and they were still adjusting to the differences. Â Granted, the pair had been so close before the change that not a whole lot did, but one thing was the possessiveness, and the crazy territorial dragon he had become. Â It drove her nuts, but what could she do? Â She had chosen him for better or for worst and no matter what happened theyâd figure it out, they always did. Â
She really did hate seeing Natsu so upset, it pained her, and if she had thought for a second the job was going to be dangerous, she never would have taken it unless he would be with her.  The worst part, was heâs barely said a word to her the whole time theyâd been home, brows still furrowed and frowning, she couldnât tell if he was upset, frustrated, worriedâŚ
âNatsu, are you,â exhale, âangry with me?â
âNo, why would you think that?â
âYou look angry⌠ and you havenât really said much since we left the guildâŚâ
Exhale, âLuce, Iâm not mad at you, itâs just,â longer exhale, âI know your injuries arenât that bad, a-and I know that it was just an accident, but it scared me.â
She shifts just enough to see his face, now tilted downward, and bangs shielding his eyes a little; is that a tear?  âBut Iâm fine, baby, why would you be scaredâŚâ
He looks up; it was tears⌠ âyeah, this time, but what if it had been different⌠ People die from accidents too, and I wasnât thereâŚâ she turns all the way around to face him as tears of her own build.  ââŚI canât protect you if Iâm not there.  I-I canât lose you Lucy, do you understand that?â
âNatsuâŚâ pressing her lips gently to his and sweeping away the tears along his cheeks, âIâm so sorry, I really wouldnât have gone if I thought something bad would happen.â  Now they are both crying, âI promise, Iâll never go anywhere without you again, itâs breaking my heart to see you like this.â     Â
A small smile finally rewards Lucy as he returns her kisses and reminds himself sheâs still here, in his arms where she belongs. Â She smiles back, tousling her fingers through his hair a little before, sliding them along his face and neck. Â He doesnât know how this woman can be jarring and yet so soothing to his soul, how she manages to pacify the swirling emotions that is him and keep her wits about her. Â Mavis, how heâd die for this woman! Â His arms enfold her again, turning her to rest against his chest, and kisses the back of her head. Â Yes, he still wants to beat up Shadow Gear a little just because, but they are damn lucky that this vengeful dragon slash demon can be tamed by his mate.
They stay there for quite some time, the water never getting any cooler thanks to his natural body heat, and as wrinkled as some of their extremities may get, even Lucy succumbs to the serenity of the water, lids growing heavy and drowsy. Â Under different circumstances, the two of them naked in a tub would have led to a much more pleasurable experience but she needed to rest, and he wouldnât risk adding to her bruises, chuckling in his head, âI can contribute new ones later.â
Natsu takes her out of the bath and gets her ready for bed before she could fully pass out and be much more difficult to handle. Â He applies salves to her bruises and bandages her ribs, wraps her ankle, happy to see the discoloration over her eye and lip have lightened considerably, and lastly forces her to take some medicine for the cold he knows is going to rear its ugly head tomorrow. Â Cuts, broken bones, with plenty of experience, these are things he can deal with, but colds, thatâs something heâs dreading. Â All his life, heâs never suffered from colds, his body seemingly immune to infections so all he can hope is to do the right things to help her through it, and it will take much more than simply digging up a tree to make her feel better. Â With her safely tucked under the covers and bundled in his arms, they drift off into the night.
~~
âAh choo!  UghâŚ.  Ah choo!  Ugh, I feel like shitâŚâ
It had been two days since heâd got her home, two days of a steadily worsening cold, two friggin days of running himself blind not knowing how to deal with it, and worst of all it was just the beginning. Â
As Lucy stayed dead to the world yesterday morning, Natsu had snuck out, knowing he needed to get medicine for her cold but with no idea from where and he really didnât want to go to the guild for help. Â This might sound crazy, but knowing Fairytail was like a family, his friends would have insisted on coming to the apartment to help and damn it if he did not want anyone near his woman right now. Â He knew himself well enough to know, the over protective side they saw the day prior was still lingering and could kick back on at any moment. Â It didnât matter to him if he was being selfish, she wasnât just Lucy Heartfillia, Celestial Spirit mage of Fairytail anymore, but his mate, his woman, and screw what anyone else thought! Â But shit, where the hell does he get meds from?? Â
So, he did the only other thing he could think of, asked everyone he passed on the street. Â Two people pointed him to a part of Magnolia heâd never really ventured before, back alley shops, shady was an understatement, but if they said there was an apothecary then so be it. Â Low and behold, the shop existed, and Natsu bought the supplies he was told would help her. Â Itâll clear her right up, sheâll feel instantly better, the owner swore on his life, back to new in no time flat. Â Well hell, that was the best news a gullible and desperate man could ever hear! Â
Yeah, the slayer ran back to the apartment, excited and ready to shove the remedies down her throat expecting the âinstantâ reaction that never came, in fact, he swore by days end Lucy looked even worse. Â Pissed, he flew back to the shop and destroyed it, reducing not just the apothecary but the entire building it was housed in to rubble.
Back to day 2. Â Word of a half-man, half creature destroying a building in Magnolia had reached Fairytail by that morning and of course, who else could it have been? Â So, in response Makarov had sent Gray and Erza to Lucyâs apartment to find out why on Earthland had Natsu rampaged the day before. Â But he had refused to let them in, even with Erza threatening to break the door down along with him, just wouldnât budge and surprisingly, she didnât follow through with her threat. Â Maybe it was the storm behind his eyes or the menacing aura that had developed around the slayer as his anger grew that made her back off. Â
Either way, the one thing she wouldnât do was leave without helping and if medicine was what he needed, then that was what they would get for them, anything to keep the dragon from racking up more bills for the guild. Â It had taken a couple hours for the pair to show back up with not just medicine but food and other necessities along with instructions for Natsu to follow, Mira had even whipped up a batch of chicken soup for their dinner, promising more deliveries each day. Â He was grateful for the gesture, its not like he thought his friends had bad intentions, just right now, he had to satiate his demon and said demon wanted nothing more than to hoard their mate.
~~
The medicines were helping her sleep, much to the relief of her dragon. Â The care package really had been the catalyst to turn their situation around, having taken a load off his shoulders, he could focus on caring for Lucy and by the evening of day 3, her congestion was better, which meant her couching wasnât hurting her ribs as much, the cold sweats had subsided, her fever was at a manageable temperature, and she had even held down a full bowl of soup in one sitting. Â The bruising on her side was no longer an angry purple but a jaundice yellow and the marks on her eyes and lips were gone, but her ankle would take longer to fully heal, maybe another week to be on the safe side. Â
âThank you,â she whispered as Natsu carried her to the bath. Â He had been so doting and loving, it was a side to her boyfriend she infrequently saw but treasured seeing how much he was willing to do for her. Â She had heard the argument through the door yesterday between he and Erza, how he had destroyed a building, and while part of her wanted to chastise him for what he had done, she couldnât help but feel more enamored by the gesture, feel special that he would face the wrath of the Titania just for her. Â Besides, sick or not, a little pampering never hurt a girl and so she gave in to the rare opportunity. Â
He looked down at his mate as she rested her head against his shoulder, âYou donât have to thank me Luce,â and kissed her forehead, âI like taking care of youâŚâ
~~
âMmmmâŚâ she stretches her arms and back before settling amongst the sleeping body behind her, Mavis she was feeling so much better!  Natsu groaned a little at her movement and shifted his leg over to pin her from moving again earning him a chuckle.  A week of constant care must have taken a toll on the poor man but thanks to his efforts, her cold was just about gone, and her body was almost fully healed, so now it was his turn to get some much, needed rest.
She turns around in his embrace and snuggles her face into the crook of his neck, inhaling the smoky cinnamon, Mavis how she loved his scent, taking her sweet time walking her fingers along the lines of his chest, rising and falling, beneath her tips before resting above his heart. Â Her heart, he had once said, his heart belonged to her as hers belonged to him, and it was a strong beat, telling a story of strength and of a love that could weather any storm, ebbing and flowing in rhythm through a lifeâs journey, and one now shared between them.
The brushing of her fingers along his side brings an exhale from her lover but continue ghosting their way to his hips and his abs, twirling the little curls of pink peeking from his waist.  âLuce, you should be restingâŚâ
âItâs kinda hard in this position,â she plants a little peck to his collar bone. Â
âYou keep that up and something else is gonna be hard from this position.â
Lucy giggles and plants a few more kisses, âI feel a lot better Natsu, and now Iâm wide awake.â
âGo back to sleep,â he tightens his hold over her, squishing her face to his chest, âas much as Iâd love to play, I want you to be one hundred percent first.â
âIâm not fragile,â the pout evident in her tone, âyou donât need to keep codling meâŚâ
He lifts her face, âI never said you were fragile, of all people Luce, I know how strong you are,â softening his expression, âbut thatâs still not gonna stop me from fussing over you right now.â
âAww, fine.â
âGood, now go to sleep,â chuckling, âcause Iâm tired.â Â Lucy couldnât help but laugh too.
~~
Word had been delivered via Happy that Wendy was now back from her trip and so, the next morning finds the couple heading back to Fairytail for the first time since the disastrous and explosive encounter with Shadow Gear. Â Refusing to let her walk on her own, Lucy was riding piggy back on her boyfriend, shielding her face to the stares and snickers they passed along the street. Â It was embarrassing for the proud mage but no amount of sweet talk nor out right beating on his back to let her down was working. Â She was also worried about what will happen when they entered their guild, not so much because their friends would hold a grudge, but more so if something will provoke the slayerâs temper, and as soon as they crossed the threshold, Lucy braced for the worst.
His eyes found the blue-haired girl he was hoping for and walked straight to her table without acknowledging anyone, the priority was his mate, and nothing was getting in that way. Â Members steered clear for the most part, simply watching, trying to gauge the fire slayers emotional state which didnât seem promising at that moment. Â After putting Lucy down on the bench beside the healer, he takes a place next to her. Â
âHi Wendy,â the spirit mage hugs her friend before Natsu pulls her back and takes control over the conversation.
âWendy, could you look her over, make sure Lucy is healing up okay? Â Her cold seems to be gone and the bruising over her ribs have almost faded away, but her ankle is still bothering her.â
âSure guys,â she stands up and kneels in front of Lucy, placing her hands over Lucyâs side first. Â Satisfied that the ribs were in fact okay, she then shifts over her friendâs ankle where her hands linger a little longer, Lucy can feel the heat coming off Wendyâs hands, permeating through her muscles. Â After a few anxious minutes, the healer sits back down. Â âWell you should be good to go. Â The tendons were still a little sprained, so I took care of that, and luckily no broken bones anywhere.â
âOh, thank you, thank you, thank you!â Lucy hugs the little girl. Â âNatsu took really good care of me too,â she smiles at her boyfriend. Â Exhale, âand now Iâm back to normal.â
Wendy giggles, âYou did a great job Natsu, did you run into any problems?â
He runs his hand through his hair and finally smiles, âjust a littleâŚâ
âOi just a little?â Gray steps up beside his friend, âYou friggin blew up the apothecary shop!â
âHey!â Â Natsu pops from his seat, âThat bastard had it coming, selling me that crap medicine!â
As Gray and Natsu trade words and a few fists, Lucy fills Wendy in as to what they were arguing about. Â Levy, Gajeel, and Juvia join the table in the midst of it, peppering the spirit mage with questions of how Natsu had treated her, while Erza stepped in to break up the fight. Â
When Natsu turned back to Lucy, the frown returned, for Jet and Droy were standing there talking to her. Â âGet the hell away from her!â Â Shouting and stomping his way back over, they immediately cringed and took off out of his path.
âNatsu!â Lucy screamed back, waving her hands at him, âthey were apologizing, but it wasnât their fault, so you need to stop acting like an idiot and control yourself!â
âI donât care, they shouldâa taken better care of you.â Â He tries to grab her flailing limbs, but she pulls out of his grasp, stands up and pushes him down onto the bench roughly. Â Shock fills his orbs at the sight of his furious woman just glaring daggers at him. Â Holy Mavis! Â
She leans into her boyfriend, hands planted on either side of his body, and effectively boxing the slayer in. Â âI appreciate how much you love me, and I can understand your dragon nature, but this mate is not going to tolerate you taking it out any of our friends!â She sighs, âNatsu,â hanging her head slightly, âthis whole territorial thing, it was cute at first but,â exhale, âwe need to figure out how to keep your dragon instincts in check, so you donât end up hurting someone.â
His shoulders slump down, fuck itâs not like he wants to go beating up on anyone, he doesnât want to lose his temper every time something remotely bad happens to his mate.  âI knowâŚâ
âHey,â she kneels and cups his face in her hands, âI told you, weâre a team right, weâll figure it out together, but I need you to help me too.â
He places his hands over hers, âIâm sorry Luce,â resting his forehead against hers.
She smiles, âthe first step is you need to apologize to Jet and Droy.â
âButâŚâ
âEh,â eye brow raise, âno buts, itâs not their fault I got hurt, now go and apologize!â
âOkay, okay!â Lucy moves out of the way and watches him saunter off in search of the two men hiding somewhere in the hall. Â She exhales and plops down on the bench, that had taken a lot of energy out of her. Â
âYou know Salamanders damn lucky to have you bunny girl.â
âThanks, Gajeel.â
âIâm sure Natsu will get past this,â Levy looks over at her husband with a smirk, who quickly turns his head with a huff, âI mean it took Gajeel a few months to stop eyeing out every guy who even glanced in my direction.â
âI know⌠ Itâs still early and heâs still trying to get used to the emotions, we both are.â
âBut you handle him flawlessly,â Erza pats Lucy on the shoulder, âGajeels right, you two couldnât be any more perfect for each other.â Â
Lucy looks up to see Natsu walking back towards their table, with closer to his normal, lackadaisical gait and so much more relaxed than heâd been through this whole mess.  When he sees her staring at him, the goofy grin she loves, plasters to his face.  She canât help but smile too, âYeah, I guess we areâŚâ Â
Lucy, Cana, and Levy have been friends since childhood. Â Home for the summer from college they head to their favorite club to drink, sing, and just party the night away. Â Levyâs boyfriend Gajeel brings his friends along but Lucyâs lyrical enchantments quickly leaves his younger cousin Natsu spellbound.
Ch 4 of 10: Flirt
Ch 5 of 10: The One
âH-h-heartfillia??!! Â As in that Heartfillia family!â
âOh, you didnât know? Â I thought someone would have told you tonight who I was.â
âN-no, no one did.â
âWhy, does that bother you?â
âIt doesnât, I was just surprised that someone of your um, social standing would be interested in a guy like me.â
She frowns. Â âWhat do you mean by that?â
âI-I mean⌠Well... Iâm just an average guy andâŚâ
Crossing her arms and looking away, âI donât care about such things. Â Most of the guys that hit on me do it for two reasons, for my looks or my money and Iâm just sick of it.â
âHey,â he gingerly takes one of her hands to uncross them and with the other turns her chin back to him. Â Pausing for a moment to search deeply into her watery eyes, âLuce Iâm not like those guys.
âAnd what makes you so different?â
He smiles, âIn art class it was these eyes of yours that first got my attention.â  Her body starts to relax.  âTheyâre so bright and engaging that they just draw you in.â  Sigh, he looks down, âI know you donât remember but I do like it was yesterday.  It was the second day of class and I had just walked in, you looked up from your desk and when our eyes met, you smiled at me.  ItâŚâ
âI doâŚâ she whispers.  Shifting his face back to her gaze; his green eyes flash with a mixture of surprise and exhilarating delight.  Now she smiles and caresses his cheek, âI remember thinking youâre the first boy Iâve ever seen with pink hair; itâs my favorite color after all... But you never tried to talk to me or look at me again...â Â
He runs his hand through his hair, âYeah, I was a total introvert back then⌠ I mean Iâm still shy but back then it was worse, I probably would have fainted if I had tried to talk to you.â  She giggles at the thought.  âBut tonight it wasnât your eyes, it was your voice.  As soon as Elfman opened the door and I heard it; ugh Wow it was so entrancing; it just beckoned at me to follow.  While the others went to the bar I just kept heading towards its source and then when I saw who it was attached to, it was like a double slap; to be coming from a beautiful woman!â
âAnd you really didnât know who I was?â she murmurs
He shakes his head, âYou couldâve been a waitress for all I cared, in that moment you had me hooked like a fish on a line.â
âNatsu, IâŚâ
Both their phones start pinging and blinking with messages. Â
âUm, have funâŚâ
âY-yeah, same hereâŚâ
Based on their facial expressions they know thatâs a lie but neither is willing to admit to it. Â Turning away slightly from each other to hide the messages they fire off their replies.
Sigh, âThey are so crazy!â
âHmm?â he looks up from his phone. Â âWho is?â
âMy friends.â Â
On the rest of the drive back to her home, they do their best to keep themselves composed but Natsuâs faring a little better than she is considering her texts were more explicit. Â He puts his hand on her back instead of around her waist and softly rubs it to calm her nerves. Â She starts to melt into his side as it relaxes her but not in the way he intended. Â A permanent blush has stained her cheeks because now his touch just makes her think even more about possible bedroom activities later that night...
When they pull into the driveway, Natsu gulps; the closest heâs ever been to the inside of a mansion was watching them on television and here he was invited to one by a beautiful billionaire. Â His conscious mind throws up warning bells, hesitant if he really should have taken the girls offer. Â Events were moving so quickly and it was pushing him well outside of his comfort zone, but in the heat of the moment he just couldnât say no to her.
As they get right up to the looming structure it is quite imposing when youâre not used to such things. Â He counts two maybe three floors, what may be a garden on the right side, and a multi-vehicle carport to the left. Â Capricorn drops them off at the front door and Lucy leads him inside. Â A maid greets them in the foyer, raising an eyebrow when she sees Lucyâs male guest. Â She asks if they need anything and Natsu just says heâs thirsty, that he doesnât want to end up with a hangover tomorrow. Â âVirgo please bring us both some water in the parlor.â
Bowing, âVery well Princess.â Â She turns and heads off to the kitchen but not before taking a second look at the handsome young man.
Inside a front parlor, Lucy and Natsu are sitting on one of the couches side by side after Virgo has brought them their drinks. Â Nervous, Natsu hastily gulps his down and places the cup on the coffee table. Â He keeps his hands on his lap, fidgeting with his fingers. Â Lucy sips from her glass but her eyes are still watching him. Â She can tell heâs nervous but figures itâs because of who she is. Â âAre you okay? Â You seem anxious,â putting her cup down.
âHuh, um just a little⌠Iâve never been in a mansion before.â
âOh,â she giggles, âItâs just a roof over our heads⌠ Want a tour?â
âUm, sure.â
She pulls him off the couch but keeps their hands mingled.  Starting on the first floor she points out the dining room, kitchen, pantry, study, library, game room, ballroom, laundry room, and servantâs wing⌠ Heâs overwhelmed by how big the place really is.  âI have an indoor pool and Jacuzzi out back; the girls and I use that a lot during the winter break.  The third level is an attic and storage.â  Then she takes him to the second floor.  âThere are 5 other guest rooms on this level; each having their own bathrooms.â  Finally she reaches the master bedroom, âAnd this is my room,â she opens the door.  Up till now the situation had been benign for the most part but this; now itâs getting heated again, âher bedroom!â  He screams in his head.  âWhy would sheâŚâ  âCome on,â she pulls him into the room, closing the door behind her and locking it.  Â
âThis room has a larger bathroom, a walk in closet, and dressing area.â
Looking around the expansive chamber, âWow, itâs like an apartment all by itself, you even have a couch in here⌠and⌠itâs really pinkâŚâ
She giggles, âWell I told you itâs my favorite color.  The rest of the house needs to appear more proper for guests but in here itâs like my sanctuary....â  her voice becomes more melodic, â⌠and where I can have a little privacyâŚâ
Gulp. Â Knots tighten in his stomach as she glances at her bed... Â âUm, c-could I use your bathroom, I think the water is catching up to me.â
âOf course,â she points, âRight through that door.â
âT-thanks.â  He closes the door behind him and leans against it.  âCalm yourself man, so youâre in a girls bedroom; nothing wrong with that, itâs totally normal⌠Then why I am I quietly freaking out!  Cause youâve never been in one before thatâs not your sisters.  Just go with the flow, she likes you, you like herâŚâ  Sigh.  After finishing up his business and cleaning up he lets out one more deep breath before opening the door.
She turns to look when she hears the door open and smiles.  He exhales, âOh good, sheâs not on the bedâŚâ  Patting the cushion beside her he tentatively walks over to the couch and sits down.  When she places a hand on his thigh, he tenses slightly.  âHey just relax, Iâm not gonna bite yaâŚâ Caressing his cheek, âunless you want me toâŚâ
âLuceâŚâ he utters as she climbs onto his lap facing him and leans in for a kiss.  Pressing his back as far as he can into the couch, âWhat are you doing?â
âIsnât it obviousâŚâ  She purrs before locking lips with him again.  Natsu follows his primal instigations and melts right into the moment, I mean who wouldnât?  Sheâs like a drug to him that once you take that hit youâre trapped by its effects.  Picking up where they left off at the club, her fingers thread through his soft spikey locks and heâs wrapped his arms around her back.  Her skin tingles at his touch.  When he curls his fingers and grip against her bare flesh she moans out and with the surge of fervency her nails lightly scrape along his scalp sending shivers along his spinal column.  His kisses turn more forceful when he bites her lower lip.  A slight gasp on her part gives his tongue the opening it was looking for to explore her warm and moist orifice; such a delight to play with a fellow explorer inside.
Trailing his kisses, lips moving along her cheek and following her jawline, he pulls her hair back.  She tugs ever so slightly on his hair as his soft lips suckle at her neck, nibbling against her collar bone and shoulder.  âNatsuuâŚâ long throaty groans reverberate from her and travel through his body causing a stirring bulge in his jeans that presses against her own moistening sex.  Peaked her hormones kick in and drive her mind wild.  Slowly she moves her hands down along his chest heading in that direction.  When she reaches his waist her nimble fingers begin to undo the buttonâŚ
âWait, Luce stop.â Â He grabs her hands, âWe shouldnât do that.â
âWhy not!â Â She pouts. Â âDonât you want too?â
âI um⌠ I-I just think that going from 1st to 4th on the first night is to soon; we s-should get to know each other more first.â
âWell then letâs get to know each other betterâŚâ She tries to work at the button again but he stops her a second time.  Incensed she climbs off his lap, âYou get me all riled up and now youâre turning me down!  I canât believe this.â Â
âLuce, Iâm not the kinda guy to take a girl to bed the first time I meet them. Â Iâm sorryâ
âGet out.â
âWhat? Â Why are you over reacting; shouldnât it mean something that I wouldnât take advantage of you?â
Tears are trickling down her face.  Deep down she knows what heâs saying is right but she just doesnât want to admit it.  Sheâs craved, hungered for him all night, and he sure sent out the same signals!  She really felt that he could finally be âThe One,â and all that passion had led them here.  To be turned down now, just felt like⌠like a total let down.
âJust get out Natsu, please.â Â The water in her eyes threatens to spill from its gates.
His heart is shattering at the sight of her tears. Â He doesnât understand why she was so upset with him. Â Wouldnât most girls be happy when a guy doesnât exploit the situation? Â Now he wonders if he was fooled into thinking he meant more to her than just another mark on her bed post.
Tears of his own collect and slowly trickle down his face.  âLuce⌠Iâm sorryâŚ.â Â
Shaking, she covers her face with her hands as the tears flow down her cheeks.  Without saying another word he walks out the front door and sits on the steps melting down.  It takes him awhile to calm himself just enough to call his cousin, praying the whole time that heâll answer.  By this time, his own tears had become so heavy it has soaked the front of his shirt.  He had really felt like this girl could be âThe Oneâ and nowâŚ
âNatsu?  Why are you calling me, shouldnât you beâŚâ
âGajeel can you pick me up from Lucyâs?â Â He tries to cover it up but his cousin can hear the sniffling.
Natsu can hear Levy in the background as Gajeel explains to her they need to go. Â âYeah weâre on our way.â
âTh-thanks.â
About 15 minutes later a car pulls up to the steps. Â In his wait Natsu had gone back to crying so heavily his eyes are completely bloodshot and swollen. Â He shambles to the back seat climbing in, laying down and curling up his legs.
âOi, what happened?â
âYeah Natsu, you and Lu seemed like you were having so much fun tonight.â
âSh-she w-want-ted t-to have sex but I- I t-turned her d-down so she, she told me t-to leave.â Â
âWhy they hell would youâŚâ  But Levy slaps her boyfriendâs shoulder and glares at him to shut up; she can clearly see that Natsu is already upset so yelling wasnât the right response.
Softening her voice, âNatsu start at the beginning⌠ Tell me what happened.â
So he does.  Starting from the moment he heard Lucyâs voice, how he was entranced, to the dancing, and the kissing, then he tells her how he reacted when he found out who she was and started to get nervous on the way over to the house, he brings up art class, the make out session on the couch, ending with being kicked out.  âLevy, Iâm j-just not the t-type to-to-to s-sleep with a girl on the first n-night.  We bare-barely know each oh-other, I-I mean hell we only l-learned each otherâs last na-ames in the car!  I wanna g-get to know her bet-ter b-before making that leap⌠I-I just donât, donât under-under-stand, shouldnât girls ap-preciate that I wonât take ad-advantage of them?!  Ugh.â  He sobs into his hands, âI really thought she could finally be, you know, the one⌠but nowâŚâ  He looks up at Levy, âIs she that kind of girl, did she lead me on?  I mean the way she came onto me, w-was I gonna be just another notch on her belt??!  I-I didnât want to end up a one night st-stand.â  He shakes his head and buries his face back in his hands, âNo, I donât wanna believe sheâs like that but⌠ Fuck!  I donât know what to think!  Sheâs really messing with my head!â
Levy is absolutely stunned by what she is hearing, sheâs known Lucy over half her life and she knew her friend has never acted like this before, hell she was surprised when Lucy asked Natsu to go to her home but also happy for her friend; she and Natsu would make a great couple. Â Their chemistry was just mindboggling, so why would she have pushed it to this point? Â Did she have ulterior motives? Â Was she tired of being the only virgin in their group? Â No that canât be it. Levy shakes the thought from her mind. Â As shocked as she was about Lucyâs behavior, she also believes Natsuâs story. Â I mean think about it, why would a healthy male turn down a rich and beautiful woman, and be crying over it if he wasnât telling the truth? Â
âNatsu,â Levy does her best to comfort him.  âI believe you but no you wouldnât have been just another notch in her belt because, well⌠sheâs still a virgin.â  Natsu looks up at Levy in disbelief.  Seeing his reaction she smiles, âLucyâs never had a real boyfriend before, sheâs dated a few times but never went further than a dinner or movie.  In fact tonight was the first time I have Ever seen her react so strongly towards a guy; you must have had a profound effect on her too.â
âBut, but why would she get so mad about the sex then?â
âI have no idea but Iâm gonna find out. Â Donât worry okay, just calm down. Â Gajeelâs gonna take you home after I go talk to Lucy real quick.â
âThanks you guysâŚâ he mumbles
Levy kisses her boyfriend and gets out of the car. Â Virgo lets her in and tells her Lucyâs still in her bedroom. Â âIs that boy okay? Â He seemed really nice, and cute but left in tears.â
âNatsu, yeah donât worry Virgo, heâll be okay. Â Itâs Lucy that was being an idiot tonight.â
[Knocking]
âLu, itâs me Levy can I come in?â Â No Response. Â She places her ear up against the door and can hear light sobbing. Â âLucy, Iâm coming in.â Â She opens the door and sees the outline of her friend curled up on the bed under the covers.
âI donât wanna talk Levy.â Â She mutters
âWell too bad cause you need to.â Â Yanking back the blankets she finds Lucy still in her red dress. Â The front is splotchy from the tears that fell and her hair and make-up is a mess; eyes puffy and red. Â Sitting next to her Levy puts her hand on her friends arm. Â âLu, tell me your side of what happened.â
âM-my side?â
âIâve already spoken with Natsu. Â He called Gajeel in tears so we came here to pick him up.â
âI-I canât believe he turned me down!  I wanted him s-so badly!  I-It just built up all night till I felt like if I didnât⌠I, I, I donât know what came over me...  Iâve never felt so, so intense like this over a guy!  And I thought he wanted it tooâŚâ
Levy giggles making Lucy glare at her, âLu, thatâs called love. Â Since itâs the first time youâve ever experienced it before, youâre not used to it. Â But I told you, Natsuâs a really nice guy, donât push him to hard. Â Heâs not gonna sleep with a girl just because; he wants it to be special.â
âBut thatâs the thing.  I-I think he is special; he might even be my perfect match⌠ Does he think I go around sleeping with just any guy?â
âUm, actually based on the way you behaved, yeah he did.â Â Lucyâs eyes are screaming âWhat!â Â âYou came on so strong thatâs what he thought, and he said he didnât want to be a one night stand. Â But I cleared that up quick when I told him you were still a virgin.â
âOh my God you told him that!â
âLu you donât need to freak out because⌠so is he.â
âWait are you serious?â
Levy nods, âhe thought you were his dream girl too and then you kicked him out because he wouldnât sleep with you. Â Now heâs completely devastated over this.â
âWell, I, I donât care anymore. Â If he thought I was perfect too then maybe he should have just gave in.â
âWhatever girl, thatâs your stubborn side talking. Â You just donât wanna admit that you made a complete ass of yourself tonight in front of a fine-ass guy.â
âShut up!â
âTch, just go clean yourself up cause youâre a hot mess right now, get to bed, and think about what I said. Â Iâll drop by tomorrow to check on you.â
Levy stands up to leave when Lucy calls out to her, âIâm not changing my mind!â
âYeah, yeah,â Levy waves her hand, âYouâll be fantasizing about him in your dreams tonight.â Â And with that last jest she shut the bedroom door behind her.
Back in the carâŚ
âSo whatâd she say?â Â Probes Natsu, hoping for a good answer
âTo sum it up, sheâs totally in love with you. Â You got her so aroused tonight that she wanted you to be her first but then you turned her down so she got upset. Â Itâs not your fault; she can be stubborn like that since sheâs kinda used to getting what she wants.â
âSh-sheâs in love⌠with me?!â Â
âYeah, I think so.â  She smiles, âI told you donât worry, youâll get another chanceâŚâ  A devious grin spreads across Levyâs face as the wheels of her mind turn, âOh yeah, definitely get another chanceâŚâ
Lucy, Cana, and Levy have been friends since childhood. Â Home for the summer from college they head to their favorite club to drink, sing, and just party the night away. Â Levyâs boyfriend Gajeel brings his friends along but Lucyâs lyrical enchantments quickly leaves his younger cousin Natsu spellbound....
Chapter 1 of 10: The Voice
Itâs nearly 7pm on a Saturday night in June as the three best friends all stand around one of the mirrors in Lucy's bathroom. Â Sure, there are others they could use in her changing area but it's always more fun when they get ready together.
This is the first time in about 3 months since theyâve been able to hang out like this; each busy with college. Â But every summer break when they come home to Magnolia their focus is on catching up and having fun like there were no cares in the world. Â And tonight, was no exception, nothing was gonna stop them from heading to their favorite hangout spot; the Fairytail Karaoke Bar & Nightclub.
"Lucy quit hogging the mirror!" Levy whines, "Itâs not like you need it."
Her friend was right; the beautiful blonde could turn heads just wearing sweatpants and a hoodie. Â Over the years her girlfriends just put up with all the attention their friend received because they knew her better; she's never really cared for any of the guys who've worked up the courage to ask her out. Â Not because many weren't handsome or rich since most of them were, but mainly because they only looked at her appearance and that's not what she was looking for in a real man.
"Levy your just as adorable." Â She pinches her friendâs cheek eliciting a squeal from the girl. Â "Besides, you've already got a boyfriend so who are you trying to impress?"
Humph! Â She crosses her arms, "So, maybe I like it when guys still check me out!"
"Uh, you Naughty girl!" Lucy shrieks
"Isn't Gajeel gonna meet you there tonight? Â Or are you trying to make him jealous?"
Levy smirks, "Maybe... Â It makes the night games even spicier." Â Cana and Lucy's jaws drop; their mousy, bookworm little friend sure has changed since she started dating this guy.
"My hero!" Â Cana puts her arms around Levyâs shoulders. Â "Where have you been all this time!"
Blushing, "So, um, he's gonna have a few friends with him too."
"Oh yeah, are they hot friends?!" The brunette wiggles her eyebrows
"Iâm not sure whose coming.â
"Well I hope so, maybe Lucy here will finally get some action!"
Tch  âYou might be getting too much action Cana!  Try settling down for once."
Placing a hand on her hip, she cocks it to the side, "Oh please, life's too short, I'm still young, and I wanna have fun." Â She retorts in a serious tone.
Levy and Lucy look at each other smirking when all three start singing and waving their hands in the air, "Oooh, Girl's just wanna have Fu-un, Ooohh girls just wanna haaave fun!" Â Erupting into a giggling fit at the end.
Turning back to the full-length mirror, âSo, do you guys think this is too revealing?â Â Lucy inquires of her friends as she smoothâs down the skirt and checks herself over. Â âI still wanna be able to dance without anything bunching.â Â
âIf anything, I think itâs not revealing enough,â Cana not so coyly replies as she pulls at the halter top and pokes at Lucyâs breasts. Â âShow off more of these!â
âNo way, I donât need those falling out!â Â Sigh, âThey are such a pain sometimes.â Â Turning back to the mirror she poses a couple more times. Â The simple but elegant red halter top dress she chose was cut in the middle and with her sizable boobs, plus an open back, there was plenty of skin up top to reveal. Â The skirt was loose fitting, good for dancing, but short barely reaching her mid thighs. Â Lucy worried it was too short but as long as she was careful she should be okay. Â With a pair of black 5inch heels at the end of her long silky white legs the girl was stunning. Â
As Lucy and Cana primp and strike poses in the mirror Levyâs cell phone rings.  âHey Gajeel⌠Yeah weâre leaving in a few to head to the club⌠Alright weâll save a booth⌠How many..  okay.  What time are you guyâs⌠ Weâll see you there⌠I Love you too.  Bye.â Â
She turns around to let her friends know about the group when she sees them making kissy faces at her. Â âOoh I love you Gajeel.â Â Cana wraps her arms around herself and starts to imitate the sounds of sloppy kisses.
âCana!â Â She shrieks; her face heating up as images of her and Gajeel making out pop into her mind.
âAhâ Lucy points out giggling, âShe is thinking about it!!â
âGuys quit it! Â You better not mess with me tonight, I donât wanna be embarrassed!â
âOh, lighten up Levy!â Â Lucy teases her friend, âItâs just us in here.â Â âSo, whatâd he say?â
âTheyâll get there around 8:30-9, and thereâs 5 of them so he said find a big enough booth.â
âI donât think weâll all fit in one booth, but Iâm sure Mira will just give us the VIP section, Iâll call on the way there.â
âSooorry, Miss influential,â Cana snickers
âWhatever, weâre all friends and she always takeâs care of us.â
âThen why are we still standing around in here! Â I wanna get my drink on!â Â The brunette puts her arms around her friendâs shoulders and leads them out of the room.
âIâll text Gajeel on the way there to find us in the VIP section.â
âItâs Time to party girls!â Â Lucy squeals
As the black Bentley limo pulls up in front of Club Fairytail, one of the security guards named Al Connell opens the car's door for them. Â Lucy instructs her driver Capricorn that sheâll call when theyâre ready to leave. Â He nods and wishes them a good evening as the three girls exit the vehicle.
âI can never get used to riding in that thing. Â Lu I donât know how you mind the attention.â Â
She shrugs her shoulders, âI just grew up with it being normal.â
âWell I looove the attention,â Cana grins and waves her fingers at a few decent looking guys staring at them.
âCome on,â Lucy drags her drooling friend towards the doorâs bouncer. Â âHey Elfman!â
âHey girls; back for more I see.â
âYou know it!â
âMiraâs already got the VIP section ready for you guys. Â Is there anyone else in your group still coming?â
âYeah, my boyfriend Gajeel, do you remember him?â
âThe guy with the facial piercings?â
âThatâs him,â Levy blushes, âand four more of his friends will be with him.â
âIâll direct 'um to you guys when they get here. Â You girls have fun tonight.â Â He opens the door for them.
âThanks, Elfman.â
They head straight for a roped off section that has a reserved sign next to it. Â A girl with short white hair reaches them just as they are about to sit down. Â âHi Lisanna, howâs everything going with you and Bixlow?â
âWeâre doing great, he finally proposed to me last month.â
âReally, congratulations!â
âThanks. Â So, what can I start you off with?â
âI think our usualâs, right?â Â Lucy looks at the other two and they nod, âOh and could you bring us the karaoke book?â
The girl smiles, âAlready got it.â She hands the book to Lucy. Â âI know your routine already, Karaoke then dancing. Â Iâll be back shortly with your drinks.â
âYouâre the bomb Lis!â Â Cana yells after her. Â Â Â Â
Lisanna puts in their orders with the bartender, her brother-in-law Laxus. Â It doesnât take long since he also anticipated their usualâs and soon the girls are half way into their first round. Â
âSo, what should we sing?â Â Levy asks with the paper and pen in her hand, âWeâve got about an hour till they get here so we need about 7-10 songs.â Â She enjoys hanging out when they come here to sing, but she rarely participates, saying that Lucy has the nicest voice and Cana, well Cana just likes to be a part of any action.
The three girls huddle around the song book and start pointing out songs for Levy to write down. Â Mostly fun ones to sing but Lucy pickâs a couple of slower love songs as well. Â Her friends tease her that those are All hers as usual. Â She tries to plead for them to at least sing back up, but they reply no guarantees. Â âFine,â she huffs, âI still donât know why you wonât sing them with me.â
âBecause we canât pull them off like you. Â Duh!â Â
Lisanna returns with their second round and they hand her their list of songs. Â This section has its own karaoke set up so Lisanna programs the songs for them. Â Cana and Lucy eagerly grab the mics and stand up in front of the screen ready for the first song to come on; âLove Shackâ by the B52âs. Â âOkay you got the girls part.â Â Cana winks at Lucy who giggles, âKay.â
C- âIf you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says 15 miles to theâŚâ
L- âLooooove Shack!  Love Shack, yeah, yeah.  Iâm headin down the Atlanta highway⌠Lookin; for a looove getawayyy.  Headed for the looove getawayyy.â
Both girls start imitating 70âs & 80âs styles of dances like the disco finger, the bump, and of course the âLove Shackâ dance move; bopping around and having a blast with the music. Â Even Levy canât resist, joining them during the choruses.
C- âKnock a little louder, baby.â
L- âbang, bang, Bang, on the door babyâŚâ
C- âI canât hear you.â
L- âBang, Bang, Bang, on the door babyâŚâ
C- âKnock a little louder, sugar.â
L- âBANG, BANGâ
C- âOn the door, baby.â
L- âBANG, BANGâ
C- âOn the door baby!.â
L- âBANG, BANG!â
C- âYour What!?â
L- âTiiiinnn roof, Rusted.â Â âLove Shaaack, thatâs where itâs at. Â Love Shaaack, thatâs where itâs at.â
C- âAt the Lo-o-ove ShackâŚâ
Levy starts clapping enthusiastically as the two girls plop down on the couch and gulp their drinks; luckily Lisanna anticipates their routine and is already on her way with the next round. Â Over the next hour they sing to their hearts content, even growing a small crowd of mostly guys cheering them on. Â
Gajeel and his friends all pull up around 8:25pm and head into the club. Â Elfman opens the door and directs them to the VIP section, âJust follow the singing, I can hear Lucy right now.â
âWhoâs Lucy again?â Â Questions Gray
âSheâs one of my girlâs best friends.â
âAre they nice, Juvia hopes she will get along with them?â Â
âOh yeah, their cool, you already know Levy so just talk to her if not. Â Iâm pretty sure the other two will be dancing most of the time anyways.â
âAre they hot?!â drools Loke, their playboy friend.
âGehe, youâll like Cana, sheâs just like you, loves to party and isnât looking for a serious relationship.â
âSounds like my kind of woman!â
As the other four in the group just chat along the way, Natsuâs pace slows.  Silently wrapped up in his own thoughts, soaking up the words and her voice wafting through the air; âSo this is Lucy weâre hearing....My God her voice is just so beautifulâŚ.â
â⌠Two by two their bodies become oneâŚâŚ.  I see you through the smoky air.  Canât you feel the weight of my stare⌠ Youâre so close but still a world awayâŚ..  What Iâm dying to say, is that Iâm crazy for you.  Touch me once and youâll know itâs true.  I never wanted anyone like thisâŚ.â
Gray turns to say something to Natsu when he realizes his friend is trailing behind, âOi Natsu, you coming?â Â Looking more carefully he sees the dazed expression in his best friendâs face. âDude, whatâs the matter with you?â
âHer voice is justâŚ.  There are no words to describe itâŚâ
âHuh? Â Oh, you mean that Lucy chick whose singing, you donât even know what she looks like; she could be ugly...â
Natsu cuts him off.  âWith a voice like thatâŚ.â  He looks at his friend, âYou donât gotta wait up for me Iâll catch up.â
âSlowly now we begin to move.  Every breath Iâm deeper into you⌠Soon we two are standing still in time.  If you read my mindâŚ.â
âWhatever man. Â Weâre heading to the bar first to grab our drinks. Â Iâll see you at the table.â
âYeah sure,â Natsu mutters as he continues towards the voice, drawn to it like a moth to a flame. Â
âItâs all brand new, Iâm crazy for you.  And you know itâs trueâŚâ Â
Making his way through the small crowd she finally comes into view.  His heart stops and feet plant locked to the floor.  He canât believe what his eyes are trying to tell him⌠This girl, with the entrancing voice is drop dead gorgeous too!  A striking blonde with a flirty little red dress; his favorite color by the way, holding the microphone to her luscious looking pink lips⌠and those longâŚsilky smooth legs⌠ âWowâŚâ he softly breathes out leaving his lips parted.  Her big bright brown eyes sparkling when the lights hit them; he listens spellbound as she drags out the last line.    Â
