Controversial film depicting the terrible consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain.
I wanted to write a post about this film as the subject is very important to me, to support CND campaigns to scrap nuclear weapons and create genuine security for future generations. The film was written and directed by Peter Watkins. The War Game is a 1965 television drama, filmed in a documentary style, that depicts a nuclear war. The film was banned by the BBC, the corporation said that "the effect of the film has been judged by the BBC to be too horrifying for the medium of broadcasting. The film was finally televised on 31 July 1985 (20 years later). If you need to watch anything right now it is this film!!!! I was surprised and very pleased with the fact the BBC Iplayer have the film for everyone to see, it is available for 9 months. Another very important film about nuclear war is called 'Threads' written by Barry Hines, directed and produced by Mick Jackson. It is British apocalyptic wardrama set in 1984 in Sheffield. Threads is a film that I would watch before The War game, due to Threads being intensely shocking and within the drama genre. Threads unfortunately is not on BBC iplayer, but you can watch it online (Ideally to buy it on dvd as the creators/artists will get paid for their work) ☮

Wall, Page and Screen: Peter Watkins - 21/03/2017
This talk given by Watkins proved highly beneficial for my consideration of the use of space for exhibition and despite my chosen module being screen, he gave valuable knowledge in regards to book making and the use of printed material. For the project he done in memory of his late mother, he listed the items found in her bag after her death in a forensic, cold format and for me this highlighted the importance of each specific item. With each item listed came a ‘why’ with me trying to link every find to the cause of her death. If I died tomorrow and somebody listed everything in my position at the time, could it generate a true whole impression of the type of person I am in their head?
Back in 2014 when he showcased his work at Brighton photo the building it was held in was a grade 1 listed building. This presented a problem as he was not able to drill into the walls, hindering him from hanging photos as well as additional lighting to the venues already dim setup. He improvised and created a wooden skeleton structure made out of timber which aided in the suitable presentation of the work and also the way finding. How the users travel around the show. Watkins also shown us his pre practice when it comes to planning an exhibition with the free open source software Google Sketchup being used to create a basic digital mock-up of how he wants it to look at the end. This for me stressed the importance of creating maquette, whether that be physical or digital. The measurements of the room you are planning to exhibit in are needed beforehand so a tape measure is your best friend in this step. Of course, this process is going to be much easier and quicker if your installation is site specific for obvious reasons but there is nothing stopping you from making multiple digital maquette’s as it does not require a budget, with the software being free.
‘An exhibition and a book are two separate things, you have to approach them differently’. This is a point that Campany touched upon in another lecture where we were shown examples of photographers and artists who had released books, and not taken a practical, ergonomic or considered approach when exhibiting the work in exhibition form. Going to an exhibition to see work that would infarct look better in its original book form in my opinion is a waste of time and effort. For me, an exhibition should serve as a complimentary feature for the book, with both working in sync.
