I have an advice! Separate yourself from your disorder / dysfunctional coping mechanism / urge to sh or engage in addiction. Write a dialogue between this "evil person" and the "healthy part" that wants to get better.
How would the evil voice try to manipulate you, what would it feign?
What would the healthy voice answer? How would it argue back?

Hope this helps someone, I really like imagining my ed-voice and my healthy brain fighting and metaphorically beating the evil voice up with words.

I have stared converting it to first person and I've completed the prologue and half of chapter one.
I have to say this feels very odd. I've never written from first person perspective outside of my own personal essays and shiz. Its definitely changing the story a tad but it is making it easier to relay from his personal views.
I can't wait to see how this affects the violence in my story.
It moved. Nobody has believed him yet, but he swears it moved. He stares at his shadow, which seemingly stares back, calm, almost taunting him. He sits there, silent, waiting for it to move, to twitch, to do anything. It sits there, too, just as quiet as he is.
And then it finally happens. He watches the shadow's finger twitch when his own were completely still. He doesn't know whether he should keep sitting there or celebrate or what. The others still won't believe him if he tries to explain it now...
He decided to try something. He raises a hand in a wave, and his shadow follows, a bit faster than his own hand. "Are you... Real? Or have I truly lost it?" He asks his own shadow, something he never thought he'd ever do. Of course, he gets no verbal response, but the shadows head twitches upwards slightly, in a sort of subtle nod.
The man can hardly contain his excitement, having discovered that his shadow is a living being in itself. "What are you?" He asks, only to be greeted with silence once more. He really should have thought about this before he decided to interrogate something with no mouth.
An idea comes to his mind, and he places a finger on the wall. He traces a symbol with his fingers, watching his shadow trail behind his own finger. Not that one. He tries another one, not that one either. On the 6th symbol, the shadow speeds it's finger up slightly. They do this until a word is formed: 'friend'.
"a friend... Do you have a name, dear friend?" The man asks the shadow. The shadow twitches it's finger forward, and the process begins again, trying symbol after symbol until the next word is found. 'Many.' the man nods slowly, thinking in silence for a long while.
A final question comes to his mind, and once again, he speaks to an empty room, asking his shadow one final thing: "Will you be willing to show my companions yourself?" He's greeted with a slight twitch upwards, followed by a finger twitch. For a third time, the process begins, ending with three words instead of one: 'show them friends.'
Thanks to Solitaire by Alice Oseman, Iāve started really enjoying writing in both first person and present tense, and I wondered what the ITP charactersā voices would be like if they were the narrator of their own book from this same perspective. Into the Phantasm is third person throughout after all.
So I decided to write a quick opening for each one because why the hell not?
If you write a lot in third person, feel free to do this with some of your own characters, it has been genuinely really fun. A simple change of perspective can do wonders.
Sarah:
Another nightās gone by with very little sleep. My eyes sting and my bones feel cold, but my alarm clock says that Sarah Taylor shall sleep no more. I think thatās a Shakespeare quote. I barely remember anything I learned in English. Why did I even quote that? Stop being weird, Sarah, itās too early for that!
My alarm clock is way too loud. Feels like my ears are gonna fall off. I should really get a different one⦠Iād use my phone like a normal person would, but whenever I hear a phone vibrate I start to panic. No clue why. Iām weird. You should know this by now.
I switch my stupid clock off and get dressed into my blue hoodie and leggings. As usual, I check my mirror to see if I look okay, and as usual, I absolutely donāt. Iām passable at best and I donāt look my best today. The bags under my eyes are darker than ever and I just look really pale⦠Itās annoying⦠But, I put on my best smile anyway. Iām seeing Maya and Lillian today. A smile is the least I can do to brighten their day.
Maya:
My name is Maya Cadigan. Trans girl, half welsh, full time bitch. I love my friends, hate my mum, hate my life, hate the entire world to be honest. I just hate a lot of things, but thatās not my fault. If those things didnāt want me to hate them, they should stop being so easy to hate.
I realised I was trans a few months ago and to be honest, itās been rough. Thanks to my mum being a phobic piece of garbage, I knew way less about being trans and queer than I should have. It took a lot of research and a lot of soul searching for me to say, āHey. Iām a girl. Iām trans. And thatās okay.ā
I like being a girl.
I wanna tell my friends. I donāt think Iāll be able to go into college if I donāt have them by my side in all this. I met up with them recently and hearing them deadname me made me wanna tear my whole fucking head off. I didnāt want to blame them but I couldnāt help⦠hating them for it. Of course, that just made me hate myself so I ended up leaving early and now whenever I think about it I cringe. I can be really illogical sometimes.
Sarah will be the easiest to tell. Sheās a lesbian so sheās part of the community anyway, sheās literally the sweetest person Iāve ever met in my life and Lillian⦠I dunno, I guess I care a little more about Lillianās opinion of me⦠Sarah first then. Before I have a chance to overthink and ruin it, I grab my phone and start typing.
Lillian:
Welp, here we go. Another day of being alive.
Late summer can be such a boring time, especially so when youāve barely seen your friends recently and you always have to message first. Itās okay though, they both have busy lives. They both do a lot of stuff⦠without me⦠Iām gonna stop thinking about that now!
I contemplate getting dressed but I donāt really feel like going anywhere or even leaving the house. Pyjama day. Why not? Relax a little for once, why donāt ya, Lilly?
Note to self, stop calling yourself Lillyā¦
I donāt need my friends to have a good time. I can do all the cooking today, maybe bake something (cheesecake sounds heavenly right now, omg), and of course I can marathon some movies. Could watch a bunch of really terrible horror movies. Seems like a really terrible horror movie kinda day.
Iām fine without Sarah and Maya. Plus, when I see them again, itāll be like they never left. Iāll be fine. It wonāt ever be like the nightmares Iāve had about them leaving me. It wonāt. Itāll be fine.
Iāll be fineā¦
Kora:
Day 272 on the run
What an exciting day this is turning out to be. This parallel dimension Iāve been reading about known as āEarthā was real and Iāve just travelled to it! These magic mirrors really are fascinating. I donāt pretend to know how they work but thatās only because I havenāt finished reading the books I have about them.
I love reading so so much but I can tend to be a little slow because if I donāt give the words a little time to digest then whatās the point of even reading the book? I wonāt remember any of it!
Iāve tested the mirror out a few times and it seems that moving only a short distance on Earth and warping again can cause me to appear very far away from where I first used the mirror in the Phantasm. However, when coming back to Earth, it sends me back to around the same place. I have no clue why this happens but thereās got to be an answer. My current theory is that the landmasses are a vastly different size but I have yet to prove it.
I seem to have stumbled upon some kind of training centre called a āCollege.ā Perhaps investigating it will give me some information about this amazing new world. For the sake of research, I must enter!

Rough frames for my shot in a student animation I'm a part of! Animating the perspective of the room was easy enough, but animating the perspective of that shadow was an absolute challenge!
a mini-series of short horror stories, inspired by the fears my friends have shared with me. [SPECIAL!]
Iāve debated uploading this one for a while now, and if it even counts under the categorization Iāve created for myself with this mini-series. This one is for me! The conflict I feel with it is that it isnāt necessarily a fear, but it falls in line with a lot of the themes I like to add to my horror! So who can really say. (Me. And I can only say āIām conflictedā so many times before one of you comes and beats me to death with a hammer. So here we are).
My other issue here is the fact that in my duties as a real life freelance archivist (every day I appreciate how funny my title is) Iāve been relistening to/finally properly finishing Magnus, and I hit MAG 74: Fatigue and went, āoh, fuck, @jonnywaistcoat wrote about my own thing better than meā and had that all-too-human experience of remembering You Have Never Had An Original Thought. [I say, as if being Jonny Sims when I grow up isnāt the goal. Why else would I take the chance of bothering that cool guy like this. Get REAL]
But anyway! Hereās my own thing! Maybe eventually Iāll do an actual fear of mine! Something else is coming on Halloween, so take this now! Consider it a way to celebrate TMA 2! Wheeee!

The man downstairs isnāt my friend. I feel that I should start with that, above all else. What we have isnāt friendship.
I donāt remember when I first met him, although I do remember the first time I saw him downstairs. It was late, a time of day popular for stories such as this. Everyone was asleep. To be the only person awake in a slumbering house is a different kind of loneliness. A safety net exists, but utilizing it feels worse. You respect tiredness, you feel it yourself.
Tip-toe down the stairs, listen to their screaming protests despite your care. The lights in the living room are off, the hallway is black, and yet the pin-prick of light from the oven acts as a beacon. We glide through the hall towards that heavenly yellow-stained circle, thinking of the treats that await us: a full water bottle, maybe even a snack depending on our need for adventure at that moment. So enveloped in this walking dream, I almost didnāt see him. He sat at the kitchen table, between me and the light that was no longer warm and inviting. He was handsome, I think. A crisp black suit, a hauntingly white dress shirt. Dark hair. Forgettable.
Forgettable, and yet, I know him. Why do I know him? He watches. Are his eyes dark? They look like mine, I think. I think. Heās hard to ignore, but you do. Filling a water bottle, checking that the oven is OFF. You forgot once. You all forgot. Is the oven OFF? We go upstairs. He stays.
Every night. The house is quiet. Dead. You arenāt. I never talk to him. I think about it, though. Every night. I wonder what his voice sounds like. He always looks the same. Dark suit, perfect snow-white dress shirt, dark hair, familiar eyes. Blank face.
āWhat did you do today?ā He asks. Our conversations are always mundane. āHow did it go for us?ā A smile. I donāt know his smile. I imagine itās like the Cheshire Cat. āNot great,ā I reply. āGood!ā I replied. āI canāt do this,ā I will reply.
I donāt think he wants to do this. I donāt think he wants this. I canāt let myself believe this is what he wants. I donāt know what our relationship is.
I no longer have a downstairs. He still sits at the kitchen table. What do I call him now? He sits. He watches. He whispers. We still donāt speak, and yet: āAre you sure?ā āTell me.ā āSpeak.ā
Do I hate him? Do I need him?
He sits comfortably. If I were to sit and share a dinner, would I be comfortable? Most likely not. He is perfect. He is too at ease. This is not his home. I do not know this familiar man who has my eyes.
I would kill to be rid of him. The question of āwho?ā changes with the wind. Spite would say him. Justice would say him. Anger and despair and embarrassment would say him. He would say me. Self preservation is a concept he does not know. He only knows me. A kind of sadness fills your chest. The sadness of seeing a child lost in a grocery store- we pity helplessness. And yet, this child does not need me. This child does not care if I live or die. This child is simply using me, making me its vessel.
I do not know my relationship to the man downstairs.
