Entrepreneurship in Nursing?

There is a saying that ‘the world changes when we change our perspective.’ At the beginning of my 2nd year of being a nursing student, I was reluctant to contemplate the necessity of retaking the subject of Entrepreneurship because I could not identify its importance and role in my course. Hence, I saw it as a hindrance that could divide my focus and energy in balancing my academics and personal time. However, recent activities and discussions, such as topics and proposals about disruptors, had guided me to realize that developing an entrepreneurial mindset is crucial to becoming an efficient nurse. Nurses that possess an entrepreneurial mindset have what it takes to be successful in their endeavors because they are smart, they think on their feet, are good listeners, have excellent communication skills, and are versatile and adaptable. These nurses are also known to be hard-working, ethical, and customer-service oriented or patient-centered in their approach to healthcare. Nurses also make good salespeople every time they have to convince a patient to adhere to a regimen or follow up on some medical tests.
Therefore, nurses equipped with an entrepreneurial mindset and a significant body of knowledge of experience are marketable, valuable, and in demand. Prior to this self-realization, my broad dictionary definition of an entrepreneur would be “a person who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise, and is willing to risk a loss to make money.” This definition would apply to my previous experience in my Senior High School, wherein we had to take plenty of risks in our starting capital to earn profits. Now, I view entrepreneurship as a way of thinking, reasoning, and acting that is opportunity obsessed, holistic in approach, and leadership balanced. Therefore, entrepreneurship results in the creation, enhancement, realization, and renewal of value, not just for the owners, but for all participants and stakeholders such as myself.
That is my reflection!
