Have you ever wished that "Persistence of Memory", my crack-in-perfect-earnest fusion between Elementary and Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, had a second chapter?
Have you hoped it would be dripping with angst?
Well, I'm happy to announce it's here!
Perseverance
Joan Watson has had her life ripped out from under her, a kidnapping and cryosleep marooning her in the twenty-second century. At least Sherlock is here—and, due to some blackly humorous twist of fate, so is Jamie Moriarty. And so is a compudroid that calls itself Watson. Joan rebuilds her life from the ashes. And maybe catches an international criminal mastermind along the way.
9,000 words. WIP. Updates will happen whenever they happen.
Warning: will NOT make sense without reading "Persistence of Memory" first.
For @amindamazed, who never let the torch go out.
So a project I've done every year with my students is something I call "art re-imagined" and it's the final project for our exploration of art across history and cultures.
Basically, their job is to take a famous artwork (for my 5s, I give them nine to choose from) and recreate it in a way that represents their own lives.
When I did this with grade 8s I got some cool, out of the box stuff, but my 5s usually just opt to draw or paint something that mimics the style. So there are a lot of "Starry Night" style farms and cabins on a lake, and Keith Haring style "comics" of favourite memories, or beach vacations about to be washed away by the "Great Wave Off Kanagawa."
But this year, I decided to do an example piece to try to give them more ideas/inspiration to think outside the box.
Which is how I ended up spending over 4 hours creating... this...
It's made by pressing plasticine onto a piece of paper. It's a style I remember seeing in books when I was younger, though I don't remember much more than the fact that all the illustrations were done out of plasticine.
(I did try googling and found a couple of illustrators/authors that do this style, but none of them were the books I remember)
Anyway... this prompted 1 to do a mix of plasticine and painting, and several created sculptures.
I did have some questions about doing more complicated projects (one wanted to do woodworking) and I had to tell them that, sure, they could, but I couldn't provide the supplies for it.

Persistence of Fantasy
at the edge of nowhere
the crossroads of to and fro
lick the melting time
that drips into the sand
do not touch the grass
you find in fleeting patches
just eat the greenbacks out of hand
you find him wilting
you can, you can
fillet the man
broiled for the spoiling of the land
cleave the reaving memories
of greatness few can stand
they call it fair, so call it fair
in the cast of dreams
at the edge of nowhere
