Perry Smith with Truman Capote. The two developed an extremely close bond and it was speculated that Capote fell in love with Smith during the years of visiting him in prison while writing “In Cold Blood” - a non-fiction book about the Clutter murders in which Smith was one of the two perpetrators. Smith had requested that Capote be a witness to his execution and sent him a telegram on the day before his execution which said “Am anticipating and awaiting your visit. Please acknowledge by return wire when you expect to be here.” Capote never showed. He explained that “the emotional buildup to the execution would be too much to bear.” “In Cold Blood" made Capote the most famous author in America. He never finished another book.
