What was so super about 2014 September 8th’s supermoon? A full moon occurred that appeared slightly larger and brighter than usual. The reason is that the Moon's fully illuminated phase occurs within a short time from perigee - when the Moon is its closest to the Earth in its elliptical orbit. Although the precise conditions that define a supermoon vary, given one definition, September 2014′s super moon was the third supermoon of the year -- and the third consecutive month that a supermoon had occured. One reason supermoons are popular is because they are so easy to see -- just go outside at sunset and watch an impressive full moon rise!  Pictured above, a supermoon from 2012 is compared to a micromoon -- when a full Moon occurs near the furthest part of the Moon's orbit -- so that it appears smaller and dimmer than usual. Given many definitions, at least one supermoon occurs each year.

There are 6 supermoons in 2016, but this April new moon ranks as the 2nd closest #supermoon of the year, after the November 14 full moon supermoon. Some 2 weeks from now, on April 22, the full moon will closely align with apogee – the moon’s most distant point – to stage the smallest and farthest full moon of 2016.
