1 and 100!
1 - Kitchen Heroes - Talis Kimberley
So this one definitely ended up first because there was a bit in April, as it started to become clear we were really in for a long haul, where I just sort of listened to it on repeat in a fugue-like state as self care. It’s interesting seeing what songs people say really captured the mood for 2020 for them, this is absolutely one of mine. The general sentiment of building the people around you up when the world falls apart with skills like cooking and offering up hospitality sure got me as we were running around dropping off cakes and pesto and herbs on people’s doorsteps in the middle of a pandemic.
Also like. Listen. It has really, really good lyrics.“'Cause it's the stock and the cellar and the hearth and the hive / Will decide who falls and who survives” is the most metal possible way to say “Maybe you should have people with skills other than just fighting on your so-called ‘apocalypse team’” and I love it.
100 - Tonight’s the Kind of Night - Noah and the Whale
This one has consistently cropped up somewhere on my list for the last couple of years, every time because it is. An Erwyn song. Some years it’s been more of a mood for me, personally, as well although not so much for this one, but I’m glad to know that my D&D feelings alone are still powerful enough to get it up there nonetheless.
