Hi just wanted to say I visited the exhibit at the polar museum and loved it! The script to page sequence was super interesting and I loved the illustration of - I can’t remember which crew member but the one who prone to breaking out in a dance - it made me laugh out loud. excited for the novel release!
That's Pennell with the dancing! I'm so glad people are falling in love with him – he's an unfairly overlooked member of the expedition and I'm determined to rectify that. Thank you so much for going – I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Harry Pennell was born in landlocked Northamptonshire, but found his way to sea at 15 when he became a cadet in the Royal Navy, achieving Lieutenant five years later, at which rank he joined the Terra Nova Expedition as commander of the ship.
It has been a genuine pleasure to get to know Lt. Harry Pennell these last few months. He’s always been a sort of happy presence in the background, but the bits and pieces I found in New Zealand, plus the work I’ve done in his (sadly small) collection of letters at SPRI since then, has brought a really lovely person into my acquaintance. I see now why everyone was so fond of him, and so upset when he died in WWI.
Follow the link above for more drawings (he kept me company on many plane trips) and his too-short biography!
