Summary

He had tried to hide it, tried to wrap it in a bandage in hopes that it wasn’t as deep as it looked. But Penelope had noticed it, because of course she had. Her sharp eyes caught on the bloody bandage immediately. He had told her what happened, embarrassed. He took Paris’s arrow to the foot. That hurt. He still feels the throb when he lands on that foot especially awkwardly. This was just silly. A clumsy mistake. Penelope hadn’t judged, he thinks he would have preferred her to at least laugh at the irony of it. The great Diomedes, taken down by a broken kylix . Not a story the bards would sing, although the bards don’t sing much of anything about him.

- Penelope’s parents are rich, but her family is definitely not a happy one. Her father, Icarus, is a prominent businessman, one of wealthiest in Italy. Her mother, Periboea was a painter. When Penelope was 16 Icarus had her mother committed to an asylum, saying her art was disturbing and sign of mental illness. Penelope had a happy childhood, though.

- Icarus didn’t like Penelope’s desire of independence and freedom, especially as a woman.

- Diomedes parents, like Penelope’s father, are very right-wing politically. His relationship with them is very cold and distant, in fact he was relieved when he moved out for university.

- Odysseus is the luckiest of the three when it comes to family. His mother and father are both very open minded and supports him in everything. They love Penelope but they can’t stand Icarus (both for political reasons and because they feel like he wants to cut his daughter’s wings).

- None of them is christian and that didn’t help with their reputation.

- Diomede and Odysseus wrote a book together while they were colleagues. They often stayed in uni till late to put together their thoughts and work on it.

- It took a lot of time to convince Diomedes to move in with Odysseus and Penelope, but in the end they succeeded.

- Diomede does most of the cooking, Odysseus sometimes and Penelope can’t cook at all.

- Penelope’s work is often not taken seriously; she has to rely on Odysseus’ words to help her prove she is a capable psychiatrist, and that makes her feel terrible.

- Ody plays football (later on Telemachus will want to be a basketball player and that will shatter his heart 💔💔)

- Penelope’s brother Perileos is the first to find out about the three of them, but he keeps it for himself.

- It’s set in Venice during the 60/70’s

- Odysseus is pretty much inspired by Franco Basaglia.

- Penelope and Odysseus are both psychiatrists, but Odysseus is the asylum’s director.

- Diomedes is a sociology university professor (before becoming an asylum’s director Odysseus was his colleague) .

- They all met in university and were immediately very close.

- They were clearly in love, but no words were ever needed to label their relationship.

- At 22 Odysseus asked Penelope to marry him because of social conventions. Diomedes kinda felt left out and for a few months he distanced himself from them.

- Penelope was the one “leading” the three of them in the relationship: always the first to take action and move forward. This didn’t stop her from accepting to marry Odysseus, as her father wanted her to.

- Diomedes and Odysseus got close again when they both became professors in university. Penelope built their relationship back together. At this point of their story she is the glue to keep them together.

- Penelope and Odysseus are trying to change the psychiatric system as asylums don’t work and turn the patients into prisoners and animals instead of actually treating their illnesses.

- Diomedes supports them and brings their cause up to the students. He risks his job this way, but he soon becomes one of the most loved and appreciated professors.

- Their poly relationship is exposed to the public and Penelope’s father (a powerful man) decides to have her committed into an asylum.
