His father was a groom, taking care of the horses of the crime family’s top dog. His father was a thief too, a pickpocket with extremely deft fingers. Over time he had amassed over 220 gold pieces. When he thought nobody was looking he’d gloat over his treasure. He didn’t know that his son Red had become extremely skilled at becoming one with the shadows and had seen the luster of the gold light up his father’s face. He’d never forget that face, son unlike his own. The night was a cold cloak. He suppressed a shiver as he waited in the shadows under the eaves of the upper chamber of the Master’s house. He had become addicted to listening to the family’s business, especially over the last year, since he had become bound to the family in the ritual of the falling knives. Tonight the conversation would change his life forever. His father was marked for death as he’d been caught skimming the boss. An “accident” would take him out, perhaps a hoof would crush his skull. Yes. Red, it was decided, would take over his father’s duties along with his four siblings. Red’s heart sank, and then it burned as he heard the next sentence. “The young fool has never known he was that Turd’s hostage from that merchant shipping family. Hahahaha! And now he’s our son. We’ll train him to carve a path through the streets and fill our coffers. Now grab the bastard’s inheritance. It’s ours!” Red’s next moments became a blur of silent and rapid action. He raced across the compound at one with the shadows he knew better than the streets. In through the window, under the hearth the chest was claimed and wrapped in bedclothes. Lastly he donned the master worked leather armor his father had hanging in display. It fit like a glove, the Armor of Ardun. Snatching up his long bow and long sword, he left the way he’d come in, and slid into the night and onto the path of his future. The morning found him mustering with the throngs breaking camp for the great pioneers caravan. He claimed a spot as a teamster driving the horses. The path ahead seemed broad and bright.
