For many years, perhaps 12-15, it lay in slumber beneath the crown of the tree, nestled among the roots, deep in the earth, its stunted wings a cruel joke it seemed. One day it awoke and clawed its way out from darkness, feeling warmth and light on the other side of its earthen crypt. It emerged and saw the sun through the dappled light and felt a change was already occurring deep within. It found the base of the trunk of a towering tree and climbed, claw over claw until it reached a spot to rest. Within it's hard shell, it's barrier against the world, were all the things it needed to grow. So it split its shell and unfurled four lacy wings as it climbed out. Soon it was airborne flying from tree to tree and the darkness it had emerged from was no more than a shadow it now flew over. #cicada #cicadastory #growth #natureismyteacher #adelhoch
