Weekly Awesome Ghana: Working with Peer Educators

Sean Blaufuss is a Health Peace Corps Volunteer in Western Region, Ghana. For six months, he has been working the Sefwi Asawinso Secondary School’s Future Health Leaders Club. On July 18th, 2012, the club took their knowledge of malaria to Mighty Arms Preparatory School, a primary school. 

We all know that sex education is taught in schools, but what about those young people who are not in education, for a variety of reasons? Statistic shows that they are more likely to become pregnant & catch STDs so there’s a definite need for sex education & information on how to access resources outside the classroom, but reaching vulnerable young people, some of whom are living on the streets, can often be difficult.

The best way, it seems, it to use peer educators, since young people who have not continued with education are often wary of authority figures, & they feel more comfortable discussing issues surround sex with people their own age. Research also shows that reaching out to young people, whether that’s on the street or at youth centres, is far more effective than waiting for them to come to you, & engaging lessons focusing on discussion are a good way to keep their focus.

I usually don't make short posts or treat my Tumblr like Twitter, but I GOT PEER COORD FOR NEXT YEAR. FUCK YEAH, I'M SO FREAKING HAPPY. 

That means so far, for next year, I have locked down Peer Coord (3-4 units), REACH Facilitator (4 units), and then Co-Publicity Chair for PSA. All I need to hear back from now is that I got RTK (1.3 units) and that I get Scholarship Chair for my frat and I WILL BE SET FOR NEXT YEAR. Oh, and if I get Discussion Leader for FSSP this summer, that would be great too! But so far, 8 units is planned out, for sure, next year--12 if I count my Bio minor courses--and I am SET. Senior year is gonna be busy but I AM READY.

(But now IDK what to do about COACH. Interview for that is Thursday; IDK if I should follow through since I got Peer Coord already and I know I can't do both. :/ ) Oh whatevs, I'M SO HAPPY I GOT PEER COORD; NEXT YEAR IS GONNA BE BOMB.
