hot take: calling shane fan "the asian height guy" is racist. a) he has a name, and b) he is very intelligent, but saying his ethnicity is the reason why perpetuates stereotypes and discredits his hard work.
also some more asian artist recs !!
mad tsai
a.b. kei
peachluffe
lyn lapid
HE HAS A FIVE LETTER NAME!!!! A pretty well known English name too, it's not that hard to respect someone's personhood by putting in the effort to say someone by name correctly even if you're unfamiliar with it. If you know him as the "Asian height guy" (which is also dismissive he is pretty known for being able to find generally obscure things) you probably have seen his account name or people calling him by name in the comments. Is there really an excuse 😭
I believe Mad Tsai and Lyn Lapid were already mentioned, but I'd be just as excited to add the other two <3

Peach Luffe pulls the listener up into their shimmering world of romantic longing with Shimmer, the debut release from the Toronto-based group, headed and founded by Jong Lee. The collection of bedroom pop tunes are drenched in sweet synths and bolstered with tender strings.
“Fairytale” starts things off and floats in on a hazy breeze before settling into the kind of guitar-led groove you wouldn’t necessarily expect from bedroom pop. There’s a dichotomy between sound and theme on the track, which underscores a lovesick narrative with a repeated lyric of “I’m terrified by that.”
The pink-tinged melancholia of the EP continues to evolve on “Your Blue,” a minimalist lullaby-esque tune. Sweet and full of longing, the song has synth flourishes and string elements that build and crest during the bridge of the song, letting that longing soar high, Lee’s voice intertwining with them. Strings are a feature in “Rollercoaster” as well – which could be mistaken for a 50s love song, before twinkling synths meld into a well-balanced blend of vocal harmonies. A chorus of “I’m lonely / When you’re sad” repeats over and over this bright sound, the EP once again walking the line that balances the sugar and sadness that permeates the album.
30-second titular track “Shimmer” seems to be the auditory representation to the EP’s cover, encapsulating the idea of a small boat at sea, floating underneath the stars. The transitions on the album are seamless, as the record melts into final track “With Me,” where a devil-may-care attitude collides with airy, bluesy riffs.
Shimmer is one of the rare ones—an EP I review and enjoy so much I find myself returning to and adding to my own personal library and playlists. Lush and tropical sounds overlaid with themes of melancholy longing, Shimmer is inventive bedroom pop that reaches upward and looks outward.

Peach Luffe is a Canadian indie dream-pop project founded by Jong Lee. At an early age, Jong moved from South Korea to the US where he grew up on guitar singer-songwriters like Jimi Hendrix, SRV, John Mayer. He made his first songs on a cheap Epiphone guitar and was a lead guitarist in his indie rock band, Sweet Apollo. After graduating with a degree in violin, Jong decided he wanted to focus his time on songwriting and singing instead. In 2017, he moved to Toronto, Canada to pursue music.
In Toronto, Peach Luffe evolved from a solo project to a quartet, developing a sweet, mellow sound influenced by jazz, rock, classical, and neo-soul. From having a classically trained violinist, metal band drummer, and rock shredder, Peach Luffe creates songs reminiscent of Coldplay, and Mac Demarco. As for the name, Peach is because Jong likes peaches, and Luffe is because he admires Luffy from One Piece because he is so free and happy-go-lucky.
Canadian band Peach Luffe has debuted their new sing “On My Side,” which you can listen to below. Started by Korean born musician Jong SL, he started out as a solo act but wanted to rebrand himself until a new name. If you’ve been following Listen Here Reviews for awhile, you may remember when we interviewed Jong a while back. In case you missed, you can our interview with Jong here.
