E: If you wrote a sequel to Put Down in Words, what would it be about?

I’ve actually written 600 words of one. It was going to be a short set of timestamps several years in the future: mostly centered around Lola, with little moments that I was hoping I could get as a corresponding art collage. Shopping with Lola, her Halloween costumes, maybe that coastal roadtrip to see the elephant seals, etc. 

I ended up not continuing it because I think sometimes writers need to just...stop. Let a story breathe and end where it was meant to; PDIW closed on a hopeful note with an eye towards the future, and I like that people can imagine the rest for them.

I could share the 600 words I have, I guess, if anyone wanted to see it? Not on AO3, because it’s nothing close to complete, just on here.

T: Any fandom tropes you can't stand?

Uh, specifically within Sterek fandom, since that’s where I have the most experience? Uber-nurturing Pack Mom Stiles, monosyllabic emotionless Derek, soft woobie Isaac. I’ve always wanted to write a fic that has a lot more of Isaac and Stiles being absolute shits to each other, because that’s way more accurate to their dynamic.

In general (and related to Sterek still), it bugs me when people treat supernatural beings like they have some sort of split personality. Like in Gargoyles, (SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS), when I went looking for Owen/Xanatos fics, all of them seemed to be drawing this weird, sharp line between Owen and Puck. Owen is Puck. Owen Burnett didn’t exist, he’s not some human Puck possessed or is manipulating. They’re...they’re the same person, just going by a different name, in a different physical form.

The same’s true for fics that talk a lot about “Derek’s Wolf” like it’s a separate entity. Derek is a werewolf. He can transform into a physical wolf. That doesn’t mean his “wolf” is something that can be split apart from him or that has different emotions/desires.

Can you imagine reading Superman stories where Clark Kent’s like, “My Superman was driving me to seek out Lois; the urge to fly around her building using my x-ray vision to look inside was something I physically couldn’t control.”

Different forms, different display of powers, same person.

Y: A character you want to protect.

Every last one of my faves, haha!! It’s a long list; I am very tired, all my protection has been stretched far too thin.

Derek Hale, always always always. He’ll always have so much of my heart.

Jack Zimmermann has also been a big one for me (see: stepping away from fandom because I couldn’t stand how people talked about him), and lately I’ve had Big Feelings about Alucard, because Castlevania treated him like absolute shit and I can’t stand that. I wrote an entire 20k Trevor POV fic mostly just so Trevor could stroke his hair and tell him he’s beautiful and loved.

“Oh,” Stiles said, his voice coming out low and breathy, “fuck me.”

“I don’t think that’s on the syllabus, but we can check to see if there’s a spot open in any of his classes,” Scott said, grinning.

“This isn’t an actual professor, though,” Stiles insisted, unable to resist brushing his thumb over the sharp line of the man’s bearded jaw. He was laughing at something off-camera, the shot taken in three-quarters view, his coat collar casually rumpled and opened to reveal a sliver of a simple grey t-shirt. The whole thing was deliberately calculated to lend him a more accessible feel, and god help him, Stiles was falling for it.

When Stiles signed up for Dr. Hale’s intro to history class, he had two goals: knock out the credits his advisor was bugging him to complete before he graduated, and spend a few hours a week daydreaming about his sexy professor’s salt and pepper beard.

Derek, a few months away from turning forty and not sure when his life had started feeling so damn lonely, had never encountered someone like Stiles before. Bright-eyed, sharp-tongued, determined to throw Derek’s carefully cultivated world into disarray…and absolutely the last person Derek should be falling in love with.
