For the anon that asked about what a pay driver is, I have more helpful information! This is from @sharlslegrerg
âI'll add a little if you don't mind! Some may also argue that drivers like Latifi or Lando are pay drivers because they come from significant wealth, which has arguably made their way in to F1 easier compared to drivers like Ocon. Since they have had a financial backing from close family it was clearly easier to fund their karting part of their career. Because of their families wealth they can often get quite big sponsorships, such as Lando and the company PURE Scooters that his father invested in. A pay driver is still paid by the team according to their contract, but is often indirectly paid through sponsorships that came from their families wealth. The case with Stroll is quite unique though, as his father is so directly involved with the team. It's worth remembering that F1 has historically been the 'pay drivers' sport so it's not odd to have pay drivers on the grid, it's rather the norm.â
Thank you for sending this in to me! I really appreciate everyone who has clarified and corrected my words to help educate me, and the anon that asked! This community of f1blr has been so welcoming, kind and educational, so I thank all of you for that! Youâve made being an f1 fan so enjoyable!
Lando Norris has revealed he will move from the UK to Monaco this winter, with the Formula 1 driver feeling the timing is right from a caree
Oh another millionaire moving to not pay tax. Nah UK should keep taxing this millionaire. His father is billionaire too.
Bah bah tax. Hes doing it to not pay tax it's fucking obvious.
-part two- essentially a pay driver is a driver that comes with a big financial investment from someone (usually family) which might make a team choose him over possibly better candidates for the seat. stroll was a pay driver even before lawrence bought RP because even at williams lawrence brought a sizeable investment. hope this maybe clears it up a bit
Hereâs part two! Thank you for sending this in and clarifying!
your explanation of a pay driver is okay but i felt i should specify: stroll isnât like. funding his f1 career, he is paid a salary by racing point iâm sure. besides, all f1 drivers have to self fund (or find funding) for their path to the top. stroll is a pay driver because his father owns the team, so he is part of the executive board who chooses which driver stays- making it likely strollâs not really there on merit (whether heâs good or not thatâs another story). essentially -part one-
To the anon that asked, this is a much better answer! Iâm posting part two right now!

Regarding Marcus Ericsson
Fans-Â âSauber should get rid of Marcus and hire some other more talented driver.â
So...Sauber has so much less money than the other teams that it is AMAZING when they make points. (Making points is the way a team traditionally gets more income from Grand Prix(which means Grand Prize) Racing.)
Marcus Ericsson is willing to forgo a salary and pay for some of the parts and labor of the team with his own money.
Who is going to pay for the cars to go, if Marcus leaves?
His sponsors arenât going to keep paying for his teammateâs car if Marcus doesnât drive.
How will the economics will work out, when the team stops getting an income and instead has to start PAYING a driver?
âYou get millions of euros less to spend on the cars and you also have to take a lot of money out of the remaining budget to give to this kid, here. Â He will still not be able to win or get you in the points so that you may earn money that way, but that will be fineâ
âWhat do you mean you can't pay for enough mechanics and parts to make the cars run, as it is, and millions of euros less will make it so you can't have a team at all?â
âNo, just be more beneficent.â
âWhy are you backing out of the sport?â
âManor?! Manor?! I'm speaking to you!â
âWHY DIDN'T YOU FIRE MARCUS SOONER?!âÂ
Felipe Nasr : I am not a 'pay driver'
Felipe Nasr : I am not a âpay driverâ
Felipe Nasr insists that he is not a âpay driverâ in Formula 1, says he has chosen a different way for his career to stay in Formula 1.
Nasr, British F1 series winner, has reportedly paid ÂŁ12m in sponsorship from Banco do Brasil for his race seat with Sauber F1 team in this season. Nasr is adamant that he has got a support from his country for a long term career in Formula 1.
