AO3 --------------- It started as a chest pain whenever he looked into his bright blue eyes. At first, Logan had no idea what it could have been so he simply ignored it. As it went on, he realised it was also happening when he noticed little details about the other, like how his eyes almost sparkle when talking about the things he loves or how he always smiled at him with his biggest eye to eye smiles, or how heâd give him the gentler ones when he was trying to calm him down. For some reason, just him looking at Logan would calm any anger or annoyance that would bubble. Usually from people giving the other of the two certain looks or who seem to get too polite with him. Not that they couldnât, Patton wasnât his to get protective over, but also as someone who the other called his âbest friendâ, he felt it was his place to protect the other where he could especially since Patton was far too trusting for his own good. So Logan would just put his best scowl on whenever the others were around to not so subtly tell them to back off.
Then not even a week had gone by and it progressed into small coughing fits. He continued to ignore it for a few days until small blue petals began showing up in his hands like coughing up phlegm or even blood but this was far more unpleasant. He wasnât an idiot, it had clicked by now what was going on but he decided to repress it was for the best because in his opinion he could still ignore it at this level with no consequences. Spoiler; he is in fact an idiot. He knew this was complete bullshit. He knew he couldn't stop it. What was worse was the fact that he knew if he mentioned it to the other he would feel helpless, because he couldnât help him either.
It became a problem when he started happening in front of Patton, now in the middle of his last week, he knew it was too late for himself. Patton didnât know any better, took Loganâs ânot feeling wellâ and offered to make soup because he was good like that. He had given a bitter laugh, said âsure Iâd love some'' which made Patton smile as wide as he usually did which made the spluttering worse and his heart hurt. He wanted the other to be happy, and if that would be his demise heâd accept that and die peacefully.
So he saw Patton one last time, taking in the last smiles, the last laughs, the last sounds of his voice, the last of seeing his happy freckled face and blue eyes. The last of everything. He made peace with himself, to know his love was happy before his end was all the peace he needed to know to be ready in his final breaths in the final moments. As the flower petals fell out of his mouth, onto the floor he would fall onto, looking up at the sunset.
A fitting end.
