I finished designing two patterns for that potential commission, only one of which I’m actually willing to stitch.
The first is 8x12 on 14 ct aida, and would be approx. 75 hours of stitching. I’m giving him the pattern anyway because I finished it, but I’m not willing to put in the time for this one.
The second is 5x7 on 16 ct aida. Much more simplified, but I’m relatively happy with it. This one would be approx. 34 hours of stitching. Since I already do about 1.5 hours of cross stitch a week during my break at work, this is absolutely doable before Christmas without changing my habits at all.
I’ve put in a little over 4 hours of design time, so I’m estimating the project to take about 42 hours overall.
Would I do this for just anyone? No. But I’ve worked closely with this coworker for almost 5 years and we’re very friendly, so I don’t mind this time.
I’m waiting to set a price until I discuss it with him, because I don’t want to lowball myself because I feel bad asking for money if he’s willing to pay more, but I’ve decided my absolute minimum is $150 + materials. That’s about $3.50/hr or $0.03/stitch. Which is comically low I know, but I’m not trying to make a living doing this and don’t intend on doing this regularly, so. And I like this coworker. Typically I’ll make whatever people want if they buy the materials I don’t have and I get to keep the extras after, so this is a significant step up.
