Liquid Shard by Poetic Kinetics
"Murmuration is the starlings that fly in big clouds or the fish that swim in schools, where the entire body of animals will shift in one direction. That whole sort of visual thing was what inspired me to kind of go in this direction."
“The inspiration comes from observing nature and the feeling that we are only aware on a very surface level of what is really going on around us. Unexpected things revealed in time-lapse or hyper-spectrum photography fascinate me. Like fractals recurring progressively, we feel the currents of air on our skin but do not see the larger movements. I wanted to play in that realm with this piece.”

In Berlin, spanning the 450-foot length of the Brandenburg Gate where the former Wall divided the city, a kinetic installation ripples in the wind, bearing hand-written messages from city residents…
Just found this, and it really moved me. It was in place from November 4-10, 2019, for Berlin Festival Week. Just beautiful!
These are amazing 😮

REFLECTION RISING / Patrick Shearn When I was thinking about how to making colours in this project, I tried to figure out some different ways to get various outcomes from some cases. Patrick Shearn’s projects always bring us natural phenomenon by using small scale materials to make a large installation. Hence I tried to look into his projects to find something that can probably inspired me in this project....

Amazing footage of Liquid Shard set to classical music.
Liquid Shard is a large-scale sculpture that is made out of holographic mylar and monofilament installed across Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles. The work spans 15,000 sq ft. The piece is comprised of two layers that rise from 15 feet off the ground to 115 feet in the air.
“The inspiration comes from observing nature and the feeling that we are only aware on a very surface level of what is really going on around us. Unexpected things are revealed in time-lapse or hyper-spectrum photography that fascinate me. Like fractals recurring progressively, we feel the currents of air on our skin but do not see the larger movements. I wanted to play in that realm with Liquid Shard.”- Patrick Shearn.
As the center square for downtown Los Angeles, this work was created site specific to be viewed both from the ground perspective looking up to the sky and from the offices surrounding, looking down. This project allows viewers to slow down, and observe the wind slowly undulating and transforming this piece, similar to watching clouds or observing the slow mesmerizing motions of sea flora. The reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, as just the contrasting rhythm of this artwork to the hustle and bustle of downtown adds something unique and positive to the urban environment.
Now Art LA secured Pershing Square which made the display of the project possible while Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics had the privilege of designing this piece specific for this site with the students of AAV School. International architecture students from a diverse range of countries were invited to explore how to engage the site with the movement and material. The students supported the installation process and were able to follow and observe the creation of this public art piece from its inception to exhibition.
In collaboration with the students at AA Visiting School, artist Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics presents “Liquid Shard” as a public art installation in alliance with Now Art LA, The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and Pershing Square in DTLA.
