KLASIK BALITANG NASYONAL: Mega Manila's Alternative "NU 107" is sparking the loss of Radio Competitive Wars to commemorate 15 years of Final Radio Broadcast before the branding of "Wish 107.5"

PASIG, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- Fifteen (15) years on, the lights went out in an era for the late-night hours. A pioneering voice of alternative rock format in Metro & Mega Manila, particularly in some selected areas of National Capital Region (NCR). Quad Cities' newspaper outlet 'The Brighton Bugle' is on site in 'Garnet Road, Pasig City', the said region. The station's former studios were previously expected to be reoccupied and newly vacated by mid-2010 onwards, as rock fans commemorate this sad milestone in history.
First hitting the airwaves in the wake of the Marcos Sr.-era's Martial Law, NU 107 was soft-launched at the end of August 1987, officially also following at the end of October, that same year, initially championing new wave and punk music radio format. Throughout the 1990s, the station solidified its identity as "The Home of New Rock", becoming the essential soundtrack for a generation by featuring global acts in grunge and alternative rock, alongside the rise of seminal Original Pilipino Music (OPM) bands. As the new millennium of the 2000s came up, the programming had evolved to include nu metal and a continued commitment to local talent.
On that fateful Sunday night in early mid-November of 2010, a massive crowd of listeners and artists gathered outside the AIC Gold Tower for an impromptu candlelight vigil. The official playlist of the final hour at 11pm onwards (Manila local time) was a poignant reflection of its history, featuring The Beatles' cover of Grandaddy's Revolution, Sandwhich sang an OPM song of Masilungan, Simple Mind's anthemic "Don't You (Forget About Me)", then followed by Modest Mouse's Float On. Pearl Jam spun a soundtrack of "Spin the Black Circle", alongside The Smith's "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". Lastly, "Ang Huling El Bimbo" wraps up with the iconic Filipino rock band 'Eraserheads'.
Cris Hermosisima, station manager and final disc jockey (DJ) of DWNU-FM, which is known on board as "Cris Cruise" said in his farewell message to radio listeners: "For the [final] time [tonight], it's a minute before 12 [midnight]. NU 107 is DWNU-FM at 107.5 megahertz in Pasig [City]. Once the loudest and proudest member of the [Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas]. This has been NU 107, the Philippine's one and only home of new rock. This was NU 107, we are signing off", concluded Cris. This year in 2025 marks the 15th commemorative anniversary on the 1st floor of 'AIC Gold Tower' in Ortigas Center, where NU 107 broadcast before in Pasig City on November 7th, 2010. Progressive Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) owns the airwaves of 107.5mhz DWNU after 23 years in the FM band at 12:08am the next day on November 8th.
It was later reoccupied and rebranded as Win Radio for over 3 years under ZimZam Management Incorporated (ZZMi), the same frequency after ceasing operations of NU 107. And in early mid-August 2014, Wish 107.5 was born as an all-hits FM station under the new management of Breakthrough and Milestones Productions Incorporated (BMPi). Years passed in the early mid-2010s, they currently remodeled into a Chinese fast-food restaurant 'Chowking', which stands directly next to an 'EastWest Bank' branch, marking a complete physical transformation from its rock origins. We do reach out to one of Eraserheads' rock band member via social media for a statement regarding the station's closure, but the band member has yet to issue a message, respecting the gravity of this significant anniversary.
The Brighton Bugle thoroughly grasps the issue, where one of the definitive major factors behind the sudden closure was financial considerations, specifically a lack of advertiser support and poor commercial ratings against competitors for listeners. The listener demographics in Manila and parts of the NCR are no longer appealing and have economically become unviable for alternative rock, which may have led to an abuse of dominant market position and other unknown challenges, which in due respect were not independently verified. PBC made the difficult decision to switch to a more popular, mass-market radio format.
Whether you're a founding listener of the new wave, especially nu metal and alternative, or listened to the current OPM rock sensation, the passing of NU 107 leaves a cultural gap that remains palpable 15 years later. It is a stereotypical music radio business, a success of commerce over historical arts. But that is the cost of improvement, Fandreas!
Rock and roll, however, is not meant to be simple. It has a spirit that is too large to be within a radio signal. Thus, we say, keep those memories alive, keep the music playing on your own music streaming platforms such as Spotify, or switch to something similar in its transistor radio sets, and never forget the soundtrack of a generation! That's the kind of legacy in our purpose back home in America that truly deserves to trend to listen on free radio.
