night after a seizure
alt version and close ups under the cut
Do these Brothers Karamazov characters smoke weed?
Fyodor: it’s happened. But not habitually.
Grigory: Thinks weed is from the devil and if you smoke you will not see the gates of heaven.
Marfa: Tried it once or twice as a young woman but doesn’t partake anymore, in part due to Grigory. #FreeHer
Ivan: tried it once and got so so so so scared. Hit the cart, saw the devil, and started having a panic attack at the sesh. Ohh poor thang. He can’t hang.
Dmitry: Not really a fan, but not a prude about it. Will partake occasionally. Prefers alcohol.
Grushenka: She’s rolling FAT girl blunts with lavender and rose. She has an adorable and extravagant stash box.
Katerina Ivanovna: No and she looks down on people who do. But she smokes Virginia slims when she’s stressing.
Alyosha: Controversially, has tried it.
Father Zossima: level 10000 oldhead wizard stoner. Starts and ends every single day with a bowl in the monastery garden. Has not had a tolerance break since he was like 20. It’s a plant, a natural medicine, and one of God’s creations.
Smerdyakov: Yes, alone in his room at night. And he is NOT fucking sharing.
Marya Kondratyevna: Prefers gummies. It makes her cough :(
Rakitin: Every single day. He reeks of it. And he does NOT clean his bong.
Kolya Krassotkin: who do you think is selling to Rakitin
Madame Kholakova: yes and it’s a secret from Lise
Lise: yes and it’s a secret from Madame Kholakhova

I present you with my self-indulgent Brothers Karamazov good ending alternate universe. Basically instead of killing himself after the third meeting with Ivan, Smerdyakov instead flees to France with Marya Kondratyevna and they heal and start a new life there 🥺
Bonus pasha with spectacles
Smerdyakov with a Guitar!
god this Brothers Karamazov chapter is soooo funny. the way Alyosha just eavesdrops on Pavel and we get a glimpse of his personal life. and the way Alyosha sneezes and gives himself away and theyre just sooo confused on where he came from LMAOOOO one of my fave chapters
I think there's something to be said about how in the brothers karamazov every bit of pavel smerdyakov's suffering is almost always viewed first and foremost as an inconvenience, and maybe (if he's lucky!) an actual concern.
he's had a seizure? well what a shame he can't cook fyodor pavlovich's soup while he's sick! he's stressed tf out about being an informant for dmitri to the point hes pleading for him not to kill him? what an inconvenience to mitya's hopes with grushenka!
with ivans meetings at the end it's present too. when he goes to the hospital and pasha is very clearly sick ivan's first thought is not concern for his health. it's wondering whether pavel's postical symptoms will interfere with the information IVAN wants to get out of him.
and even at the end after pavel kills himself there's very little sympathy shown about his mental state or his death (even from Alyosha! who literally is blank-faced no reaction as he LOOKS AT pavel's body still there!!!! that is crazy to me!!!) no, it's mainly regarded as an inconvenience to the trial to not be able to have him as a witness anymore.
it makes it all the more powerful when smerdyakov is able to take this treatment and weaponize it. his inconvenient epilepsy suddenly becomes his most foolproof alibi. his fear he showed towards mitya is framed as a character sketch incongruent with the demeanor of a murderer. ivan's claims of what he said during their conversations are robbed of all validity due to how pavel's death denies any solid proof.
goddddd though it's awesome characterization, i still find it really sad tbh :( the only exceptions to this seem to be the ones who raised him---marfa, who is really the only one who cared for him during his seizures and grigory, who crossed himself and spoke warmly of pavel at the trial. and then also marya kondratyevna the neighbor girl, who takes him in and worries over his health after he gets out of the hospital. it makes me extremely interested in their little world---the closest thing pavel had to a true family and to love before he died. he was never accepted as a karamazov so i wonder what bits of acceptance he got with them...
