One of the things that most impressed me after moving from Tokyo to Karuizawa was ・The soundscape of wild birds in spring, virtually free of invasive species ・The soundscape of insects in autumn, free of invasive species ・The flora on the forest floor, before deer damage became a serious problem It was only by experiencing the changing seasons up close that I realised just how diverse and rich these things are.
Although I have often visited Karuizawa over the years to collect moths and such, settling down here has allowed me to see anew just how significant “daily life” is—a life built upon the accumulation of small changes. It reminds me of what a fisherman friend once said: “No matter how skilled you are, you can never beat the local old chap who visits the fishing spot every day.”
As a nature guide, I have spent the three years since moving here exploring what I wish to convey about Karuizawa’s natural world. And one of the fundamental aspects of this is not the amount of our knowledge or the rarity of the wildlife. Rather, it lies in how we can draw out the significance of the richness of “daily life” from a moment of incidental “observation”. It is a constant questioning of our very daily attitude towards nature itself.
