"Sorry, Steve! I'm busy today." The curly-haired boy happily grinned while shutting the door on his older friend.
The male stuck his foot in making Dustin open the door once more with an annoyed look on his face this time.
"Come on Henderson! We've had this planned for like 2 weeks now!" Steve complained, his face scrunching up.
Dustin gave a blank stare and casually shrugged, "Got more important things to do---"
The sound of the phone ringing caused both males to freeze. The fourteen-year-old let out a sigh and went to the phone to answer.
Steve rested his body on the door frame and let out a few grumbles under his breath. He and Dustin had planned to go to the arcade. It would be a win for both of them. Dustin would get to play his games meanwhile Steve would impress the ladies with his babysitting skills.
After Nancy, Steve had too many failed relationships to count so he was getting pretty desperate.
"Mom!" Dustin screamed into the phone while racing around the house to go collect a few things. He grabbed onto Steve on the way out. "GET IN THE CAR AND DRIVE!"
The older male didn't hesitate to race into the car and slam his foot on the gas.
Still, he wondered what was so important.
"wait-- so you're telling me, after all this time, you had a sister?" Steve scoffed with a mind-blown expression on his face.
"yes! I told you like a million times in the car and yet you can't get that single fact in your head?!" He exclaimed while giving Steve a frustrated look.
Harrington raised a brow, "Calm down man--"
Dustin shook his head, "I can't calm down! This is my first time seeing my sister in years, Steve! Years I say! I was going to shower so I don't smell like total shit but then my mom had to fricking bail!" He sunk down in his seat with a giant frown plastered on his face.
"Hey," Steve placed a hand on his shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile. "I'm sure no matter how bad you smell, your sister will be happy to see you."
The young teen swallowed and nodded his head. He proceeded to then quickly mess with his hair to make it look as nice as possible.
"Alright, ten minutes until the plane lands." He turned to Steve with an anxious gaze. "It's time." Dustin exited the car and began to walk away but came to halt once he noticed the taller boy wasn't behind him.
"That means you too Steve!" He shouted while motioning him to follow.
The male let out a sigh and reluctantly left his car, "Only because I might be able to meet some fine ladies."
Dustin had never really understood his friend's obsession with being in a relationship. Of course, with his friends all having girlfriends, he was slightly envious but not desperate to hit on every girl he saw, unlike Steve.
"yeah, just no hitting on my sister." The boy demanded in a stern tone.
Steve scoffed, "Oh please Henderson. If she looks exactly like you, there would be no way I would go for her."
Dustin shot him a glare and slapped his shoulder. "My sister's one of the prettiest girls I've ever met, okay? Say anything mean about her or to her and I will snap you in half." He threatened and it was evident the young teen was not joking.
Harrington let out an awkward chuckle and continued walking.
To say that Dustin loved his sister would be an understatement. She was practically his idol. Y/n was smart but a total airhead at times. She was popular while still loving the things typically considered nerdy. Most of all, she never cared what other people thought and that's what drew everyone to her.
Unlike their father, Y/n constantly called him. It was her goal to call him at least once a week and to send a package of things from California every month. And each time Dustin got the package, he'd brag to his friends about how cool his older sister was. There were times that Y/n would stay on the phone for hours with him and sometimes when his friends would come over, she'd talk to them too. Once, she stayed on the phone for three hours and played DnD with him and his friends. Dustin never forgot about it. To this day, it was probably his favorite game of DnD that he ever played.
Y/n was a hero to Dustin. He hated how shitty their dad treated you so when he heard about the giant fight between the two of you, he was happy you'd be moving in with them. Yet, he understood that you were upset about having to leave the only world you knew behind. He was going to do his best to get you to adjust. Even if that meant sneaking into the high school and pretending to be a high schooler.
"So, we just stand here?" Harrington raised a brow while picking at his fingernails.
Dustin shrugged, "Well that's what they always do in the movies."
A crowd of people came down from the top of the escalator, causing a panicked Dustin to turn to his older friend.
"Don't you say anything weird or flirty. Don't you dare mention anything about the upside down or so help me Steve I will slap you so hard all your hair will fall off and you will no longer be a lady magnet!"
Steve looked at Dustin in disgust and wiped away the saliva the boy had accidentally spat off his face.
Dustin fixed his posture before smiling widely and waiting patiently for his sister to come down. But when she didn't come down with the rest of them, he began to feel an uneasiness in his stomach. It wasn't until he heard a loud squeal that he felt like he was going to burst due to the amount of happiness he felt.
"Dusty!" Y/n excitedly squealed out. She dragged her things behind her and shoved past the crowd to get on her little prince.
The older teen practically leaped at her younger brother and tightly wrapped her arms around him. Dustin let out a loud hearty chuckle and nuzzled his head into her shoulder.
As the two pulled away, Y/n grabbed onto his face. Her eye softened as she sighed, "You've gotten so big already, Buddy."
"oh, Y/n! This is my friend, Steve! Steve, this is Y/n, my very awesome older sister." He nudges the brunette with his elbow but when the older teen made no noise, he turned to him.
Steve stared ahead in a trance at the angelic-looking girl standing right in front of him. He was in total shock that the two in front of him could be siblings. They looked nothing alike besides having the same eyes and hair color.
As Y/n gave him gentle eyes, his heart began to melt. And then, she hit him with a smile. A gorgeous toothy smile that made him lose all thoughts and just stare with a goofy grin on his face.
"hey." He leaned on Dustin.
Y/n let out a chuckle, "Nice to meet you, Steve. I've heard lots of great things about you." Y/n raised her brows and bit down on her bottom lip as she turned to Dustin.
Steve's smile grew, "And what has my dear friend said?"
"Make sure to keep my distance from you since you're a player."
The older male turned to the boy beside him and glared. Dustin gave him a sheepish smile and began to back up.
"but~" The girl walked up to Harrington and looked into his eyes."I think you're way too cute to stay away from."
A large grin grew on Steve's face. He took a step closer to the girl. The large smile on his face disappeared as Dustin shoved him to the side. He grabbed onto his sister's hand and began to run like it was life or death.
The girl let out a yelp and ran with her luggage in her hand.
