Now the palace was never truly silent.
Even before dawn broke over the kingdom, it stirredâboots striking marble corridors, parchment rustling between hurried hands, and the distant clang of steel from the training grounds below. It was a place built on movement. On duty. On time that never waited for anyone.
And today, it felt heavier than usual.
A month had passed since the kingdom welcomed its new king.
But long before crowns and coronations, there had been a beginning. The day you had first met the prince.
âž»
It was twelve years ago.
You were just standing outside the royal wing, hands folded neatly in front of your apron, trying very hard not to fidget.
The oak doors ahead of you were enormous, carved with the royal crest, polished until they reflected the soft morning light. Somewhere beyond them, voices echoed faintly through the wood.
Her Majesty stood beside you.
âYou may come in when I call for you,â she said gently.
âYes, of course! Your Majesty.â You replied after being snapped back into reality
âHeâs been in there since sunrise, Your Majestyâ, said a man with bright red hair, rather casually standing against the wall in a Royal Guard uniform.
Kirishima Eijiro; he was known as the chivalrous red riot among the other knights. The captain of the Royal Guard and the princeâs personal guard.
He noticed your glance and grinned.
âDonât worry. Heâs just⊠like that.â
âLike what?â you asked softly, tilting your head.
Kirishima shrugged. âStubborn as a mule, though donât tell him I said that,â he chuckled, and so did you, but before you could reply, the queen cleared her throat, and the two of you immediately fixed your postures. She stepped forward and knocked once.
Then she entered along with Kirishima whilst you remained outside.
Inside, the study was lit with morning light peering through its curtains. Books and reports were scattered across a wide oak desk, all arranged with unsettling precision. Near the balcony stood the prince himself, arms folded as he looked out over the training grounds below.
He didnât turn when the door opened.
âWhat?â
âItâs me, Katsukiâ, the queen replied, sitting down on the couch as Kirishima helped pour her a cup of tea.
ââŠSo?â
âIâve come to introduce someone,â she said, placing the cup to her lips only to be met with a sigh from Bakugou.
âItâs high time you have someone keeping an eye on you, and Kirishima can only do so muchâ, she said. âThank you, your majestyâ, Kirishima replied with adoration.
âThe palace already has hundreds of maids, so why i have any use for one?â
The queenâs voice softened, but did not waver.
âBecause none of them is responsible for you.â
Silence.
âAnd look at the state of this room- a future king shouldnât live in such an unorderly space! And you know that,â She naggedÂ
Bakugo clicked his tongue.
âI donât need someone following me around. I already have dumb hair for that-â
âHey! Iâm right here!â Kirishima called.
âI wasnât exactly whispering, now was I?â
The queen ignored them both.
âSilence! The two of you!â She said, raising her hand âNow then⊠[Name], would you please come in!â Before Bakugou could protest, you had already stepped inside.
The air changed- you took a steadying breath as you walked through the door, taking everything in.
Then your eyes instinctively found his.Â
wow.. You thoughtâŠhe was taller than you had originally expected and older too.
Not simply in age, of course, but simply the way he carried himself.
There was an unmistakable confidence about him, his shoulders squared, posture unwavering, and even standing in silence, it was as though he commanded the room with his very presence, so it was rather difficult to look anywhere else.
Then you noticed his gaze on you; he was simply watching for what had felt like an eternity, as though he was trying to determine what to make of this stranger his mother had just brought before him.Â
His gaze made your heart flutter, and you quickly lowered your head into a practised curtsy.
âIt is an honour to serve you, Your Highness,â you said with a subtle smile across your face
The silence stretched.
â⊠Youâre smiling.â
You blinked.
âI-I am?â you replied, standing straight.Â
âTch.â
You lightly chuckled as your fingertips brushed against your lipsÂ
âI suppose I amâ You lowered your hands neatly in front of you.Â
âI mean⊠itâs rather like a dream come true. to have even been considered worthy enough for a position like this.â
Bakugouâs expression wavered only slightly.
ââŠreally?â he said, confused âWorking as a maid was your dream?â
âOh well, not necessarily!â you shook your head with a sheepish smile âNot exactlyâ You glanced around his study for a moment before looking back at him.
âItâs simply⊠a wonderful opportunity Iâd never imagined Iâd be given. I mean to serve within the royal wing, to learn and experience all of thisâ Your smile softened. âI think thatâs more than enough for me.â
The room fell silent once more as Bakugou continued to study you for a moment before turning away
âWell, if youâre going to work here, then make sure to keep upâ And just like that, he returned to his work.
âYes, of course, your highness.â You curtsiedÂ
From the corner of the room, the Queen and Kirishima smiled.
Now, from that day onward, the days settled into a rhythm.Â
You rose before the sun each morning, dressing quietly within your own chambers before making your way to the palace tailor to collect the princeâs attire for the day.
Now, by the time the first rays of dawn had spilt through the castle windows, you would find yourself standing outside his chambers, a freshly pressed uniform in tow, neatly draped over one arm.
You made three measured knocks against the heavy oak doors.
âYour Highness,â you called out gently. âIt is meâ
You waited before hearing a response.
â⊠Come inâ, he groaned, getting out of bed
You stepped inside, placing the clothes on a chair as you went to draw back the curtains and open the windows to welcome the early morning light. But by the time the prince emerged from behind his dressing screen.Â
You walked towards him as you helped fasten each polished button and smoothed down his embroidered collar and sash that marked his place as heir to the throne.
Neither of you spoke; I mean, there was no need to.
The following years of routine had turned the process into something effortless.Â
Once satisfied, you stepped back, giving his cloak one final straightening tug before offering a small nod and smile.
âBreakfast is ready in your dining quarters, your majestyâ
Bakugou glanced toward the clock resting upon the mantel.
âRight on timeâŠas per usualâ, he said
âI try to beâ You couldn't help the faint smile that tugged at your lips.Â
Now, taking that as his answer, you stepped aside, allowing him to leave the chambers first, to then be met with Kirishima, who was waiting outside his room to escort him.
Without thinking, your feet fell into their familiar rhythm.
Ten paces behind.
As they always did.Â
âž»
Twelve years later.
The palace had scarcely settled after the grand celebrations.
Only a week had passed since the coronation, yet traces of the occasion still lingered throughout the castle. Crimson banners embroidered with the royal crest hung proudly from the towering stone walls, while bouquets gifted by neighbouring kingdoms adorned every corridor, their sweet fragrance drifting through the halls.
The kingdom had welcomed its new king with celebration.
Now...Reality had begun.
Council meetings stretched from sunrise until dusk. Petitions arrived by the dozens each morning, diplomats came and went with little warning, and reports from every corner of the kingdom found their way onto His Majesty's desk before the ink on yesterday's had even dried.
You watched it all unfold from where you had always been.
Just as the palace bells signalled the end of another long day, the final members of the royal council offered their bows before taking their leave.
The heavy doors to the King's study closed with a quiet thud.
At last... Silence.
Bakugou remained seated behind his desk, shoulders slightly slumped as he stared at the final report before him.
"...Finally."
You couldn't help the small smile that found your lips.
"A rather busy first week, wasnât it, Your Majesty?â
âWell, that's putting it lightly."
He reached for another document before stopping halfway.
"...Tomorrow."
You blinked. "Tomorrow?"
"It can wait until tomorrow."
You had to stop yourself from looking too surprised. "...Of course."
Carefully, you gathered the completed reports into neat stacks before setting them aside for the morning.Â
By the time you looked back, Bakugou had already removed the heavy crimson cloak from his shoulders, leaving it draped rather carelessly across the back of his chair.
You picked it up before it could slide onto the floor.
"...Still can't hang this up properly, your majestyâ you say
"I was getting to it."
"Mhm."
"I was."
"I'm sure you were."
He shot you an unimpressed look. "...You're getting bold."
A soft laugh escaped you. "I've simply known you a long time, Your Majesty."
"Tch." There was no bite behind the sound.
You carefully brushed a crease from the embroidered fabric before folding it over your arm.
Your eyes drifted toward the golden crown resting upon the desk.
It looked... surprisingly heavy. You reached for it with both hands, lifting it only slightly. "...Goodness."
Bakugou glanced over. "What?"
"Itâs rather heavier than it looks."
âYeah, it weighs a tonâ, he says, watching her hold it
"I can believe that." You smiled to yourself as you placed it gently upon its velvet cushion.
"No wonder you looked relieved to take it off."
"...Don't remind me."
The corner of your lips lifted ever so slightly. "I think it suits you."
He paused. "...Yeah?"
âMhm!â Your gaze lingered on the crown for only a moment before returning to him.
"You worked very hard for this." You gave a warm smile âCongratulations, your majestyâ
He just simply looked at you.
"...Thanks."
The word slipped out so naturally that neither of you seemed to notice it at first.
"You're welcome,â you say as you return to placing everything away
His ears tinged ever so slightly pink.
He stood abruptly, surprising you.
"I'm going to bed."
âOh, of course." You followed after him, carrying his folded cloak and the crown with practised care.
Tomorrow would bring another mountain of responsibilities.
But for tonight...
The king was simply Katsuki.
And you were simply the one who had always been there.

"that's it. i'm fucking done!"
you wailed with a noise of irritation, a string of curses leaving your lips unceremoniously. you kicked the bottom of the unresponsive vending machine with a force enough to rattle the case, but your bag of cool ranch doritos wasn't budging. this, seemingly, was your last straw.
"do you need a minute, or" your head whips over to see a familiar blonde, the one from your business lecture. he always sat two rows in front of you and you were able to see him playing 2048 on his computer instead of taking notes. it pissed you off, considering he always made the highest score on exams.
your eye twitches. "i'm sorry, am i inconveniencing you from getting a drink?"
"well actually, yeahâ"
"well that's too damn bad. i don't give a fuck! can't you see the damn thing isn't even fucking working?! god, this was the last thing i needed today, are you joking?!" you continue your long tirade of curses and word vomit at the poor guy, but he was completely blocking you out. your words sounded underwater to his inner thoughts. he was more focused on looking at you. he liked the sound of your voice, especially when you were yelling. he liked the way your expression changed before you said something rude, as though every thought appeared on your face before it reached your mouth. did you always wear your hair down like that? and your earrings, don't you usually wear hoops on tuesdays?
he's only brought back to reality when you flick him on the forehead. "that's so fucking rich, bakugou. what, never been yelled at before?!"
he blinks. the place where your finger had struck his forehead stinging faintly, though not nearly enough to justify the expression that crawled across his face. his eyebrows pulled together and his mouth twisted into a sour scowl.
âthe fuck was that for?"
âyou were zoning the fuck out!â you snapped, throwing your hands up in exasperation. âiâve been talking this entire time and you were just standing there staring at me like i'm an alien.â âyou werenât talking. you were throwing a tantrum about your shitty day.â
âoh, fuck off! youâd be pissed too if you had the same day!â
bakugou glanced past you toward the vending machine, where the bright blue bag remained caught between two of the metal coils. it was close enough to falling that even the slightest movement should have knocked it loose, but it hung there stubbornly, appearing almost purposeful in the way it denied you what you wanted.
âhow much did you put in?â
you sigh exasperatedly. âwhy does that matter?â
he doesn't ask again, just stares at you with that same monotone and off-putting face you were so used to.
âit was two dollars and fifty cents,â you said, crossing your arms over your chest. âand it isnât about the money. itâs the principle of it.â
he looked back at you, his eyes dragging over your face for a moment longer than necessary. your cheeks were tinted warmer from yelling, your hair slightly mussed from where you had repeatedly pushed it away from your face. the fact that he was paying any attention to you bothered him.
âthe principle,â he repeated, his voice flat.
âyes, the principle, bakugou. i paid for something, so i should receive it. thatâs how transactions work. no free lunch? donât you pay attention in class?â
a scoff leaves his lips instantly. âmore than you, apparently.â
your eyes narrowed. âall you do is fuck around every lecture!â
âand?â
âand you still get the highest grade every time! which is deeply annoying, and honestly a little sus.â
âand you look at my exam score every time they get passed back.â
your mouth opened, but whatever insult had been waiting on your tongue failed to arrive. instead, you stared at him with an expression caught somewhere between disbelief and accusation. âhow do you even know i'm looking?â
âi can see you leering over your macbook in the reflection of my screen. youâre not subtle at all,â he muttered.
before you could continue the petty argument, he grabbed the sides of the vending machine, ignoring the confused noise you made behind him, and gave it one violent pull forward. the machine rocked beneath his hands before slamming back against the wall, the impact loud enough to echo throughout the otherwise empty hallway. your doritos dropped from the coil and landed in the tray with a soft crinkly thwack.
âholy shit,â you breathed, pushing past him to retrieve the goods.
you crouched to pull out the bag, clutching it against your chest as though he had just rescued something worth far more than a measly two-fifty. the anger that had consumed you only moments ago disappeared so quickly it was almost unsettling, replaced by a smile so unguarded that bakugou found himself staring again. you looked different when you smiled properly.
he had seen you laugh in class before, usually when the girl beside you whispered something during the professorâs lectures, but those smiles had always been brief and half-hidden behind your hand. this one took over your entire face, softening the crease between your eyebrows and making your eyes brighten with an amount of happiness that was completely unreasonable considering you were only holding a bag of doritos. the inferior flavor, no less. spicy nacho was worlds better.
âyou almost knocked the whole thing over,â you said, standing again. âi think that technically counts as destruction of university property.â
âehhhhh? you fuckin' kicked it first!â
âtomato, tomato.â you yanked apart at the top of the bag, struggling for a moment before it tore open too forcefully and sent a puff of seasoning into the air. you coughed, turning your face away as bakugou covered his nose with the collar of his shirt.
âfuckin' hell,â he said. âyou canât do anything normally, can you?â
bakugou had never spoken to you before today.
not properly, anyway. during the first week of classes, you sat right behind him. you had asked to borrow a pencil then, and he had told you to bring your own. you had called him an asshole beneath your breath, apparently unaware that he could hear you. after that, you moved to sit two rows behind him out of pure spite. bakugou looked at you again and felt something inside him change with enough discomfort to make his stomach lurch. it was ridiculous. he barely knew you, and yet some part of him seemed to have decided otherwise months ago. memorizing you piece by piece while he pretended to focus on the numbers moving across his computer screen.
âbakugouuu! i said thanks for getting my chips!â you said, waving a hand in front of his face. "jeez, what a weirdo.." you muttered under your breath.
he caught your wrist before your fingers could touch his forehead again, the movement automatic. your skin was cool beneath his palm, and your words stopped abruptly as you looked down at where he was holding you. bakugou released you quickly after, and it made the gesture seem more unnatural.
âs'nothing. don't flick me again.â
âquit zoning out!â
âyou talk too fuckin' much!â
you smiled again, clearly amused by his irritation, and bakugou felt the same awful tightening in his chest. he was deeply aware of what it was.
you held the open bag toward him, tilting it slightly in offering. âwant one?â
bakugou stared down at it before looking back at you. there was dorito dust near the corner of your mouth, and he had to curl his fingers into his palm to stop himself from reaching up and wiping it away.
âno.â
you shrugged. âalright. i'm not asking twice,â you stuff your mouth with another two pieces, clearly too big to chew in one go. it made you look like a chipmunk. a cute one, he thought. fuck.
you turned and started walking toward the lecture hall, apparently assuming that he would follow you. after a few steps, you looked over your shoulder and frowned when you saw that he had not moved.
âare you coming? class starts in like three minutes.â
bakugou was confused, but he still picked up his bag from the floor and walked towards you. you waited until he caught up anyway, falling into step beside him as though the two of you had walked to class together a hundred times before.
you began talking again almost immediately, moving on to a new complaint about the upcoming exam, and bakugou listened with his eyes fixed straight ahead.
two years later, he's looking at how your breath evens while you sleep in his bed, curled into his side. he pushed the hair from out of your face, pressing a chaste kiss on your lashes. you had asked him earlier that night when he knew he loved you. he brushed you off at the time, but now he was pretty damn sure.
i saw someone duking it out with a vending machine today and this populated in my mind of minds. urgh

Extra Credit pt. 3: The Last Bell (7.7k)
synopsis: bakugou was assigned to visit an elementary school every friday as part of a new hero outreach program. months later, a formal event celebrating the program brings him face-to-face with the teacher who has occupied his thoughts for far too long. With one final chance to tell her how he feels, bakugou has to decide if heâs brave enough to take it.
cw: fluff, slow burn romance (kinda), prohero!bakugou and teacher!reader, light teasing/banter, bakugou being bakugou, canon-typical hero themes, angst kinda?eventual romance,
a/n: part one and part two are here! wow, part three is finally done! as some of you may know iâm in the middle of moving to a different city so life has been kicking me in the butt recently and Iâve been soo busy. so glad i was able to pump this out before things got more chaotic, i hope yâall enjoy! also i only proofread this once so please excuse any typos.
This was the first time Bakugou had ever experienced heartbreak. He hated how quickly it seeped into every corner of his life.
It bled into his hero work first. Split-second decisions that had always come naturally suddenly took a fraction longer. His focus wandered at the worst times. A glimpse of your hair across a crowded street would have his head snapping around before he caught himself. A smiling advertisement with Lemillionâs face plastered across it was enough to sour his mood for the rest of the patrol. More than once, reporters caught the sharp edge of his temper, and the headlines that followed did him no favors.
Then it invaded the one thing he could usually rely on: his routine.
