In this week’s Torah portion...
we read that Moses appoints judges to help him lead the Jewish people. Although many people use religious texts and teachings to judge others without putting themselves in another’s place, our sages present us with much wisdom on the subject. One could argue that quick-judgment is a natural ill of human society, but luckily we have these sources to help us remember that every human being is created in the same Divine Image.
“Hillel says: Do not judge another person until you have put yourself in that person’s place” (Pirkei Avot 2:5) Medieval French Commentator and genius of the Talmud Rashi adds: “Do not harshly condemn another for falling into temptation until you have been tempted by similar circumstances and have overcome them.” Joshua ben Perachyah adds to the topic that we must “judge all people by giving them the benefit of the doubt” (Pirke Aboth, p 45).
This Shabbat, let’s remember to take a step back and put ourselves in the very human shoes of every last person and see the world through their eyes. Remember, the heroes of the Tanakh and our great sages were not perfect, nor is anyone today.
Let us create a world with even more patience and compassion, filled with a deeper understanding of every last person’s comprehension of the world.
