How to navigate the Trifold Law as a modern witch

In a world that is so heated, with so much hate and conflict, how is a witch to “Do no harm” and feel confident about their contributions to the world? Here we are going to delve into what the Trifold Law means, and how it’s a tool to help us fight the good fight. 

The Wiccan Rede, and the Trifold law. 

The wiccan rede is an incantation often used in the initiation in Wicca, but is often words to go by in other religions as well. Below is a small portion

“Bide the wiccan law we must, 

in perfect love, in perfect trust 

Eight words the wiccan rede fulfill:

An ye harm none, do as ye will

And ever mind the Rule of Three:

What ye send out comes back to thee.

Follow this with mind and heart,

And merry ye meet, and merry ye part” 

This is often the only part of the Rede that is sited. Though, I would say if you had time, the Wicca Rede is a nice thing to have in your head. In my opinion of course. 

Now, those Eight words “An ye harm none, do as ye will.” Basically, do no harm, but do as you want. And the Rule of Three. Every action, be it positive or negative, it will come back to you in threes. 

The misconception 

Many people tend to see these words and think that means they need to keep their hands completely, only use white magic, and stay all “peace and love.” You end up turning your back to a lot of people who really need your help. 

Here’s my argument. 

Letting hate stand, turning your back and “doing no harm” when someone is putting harm into the world, you are letting the harm continue… which is still causing harm to the world. Being complacent in harm is just as harmful. We need to stand up. Hex who needs to be hexed, and start taking a stand for the hurt, the poor, and the broken. 

I want to clarify. If you can’t, that’s okay. This is not saying every single witch needs to be ready to cast a spell and poison a man at the drop of a hat. Some of us aren’t made out for that. 

But for those of us who can, and those of us who want to. I truly believe that in a world with so much harm, one act, be it “harmful” in the eyes of others or not, will bring back strength and love to those who need it, in this good fight. “Do no harm” sure, but if someone is hurting someone you love, and you have the strength and power to hex that abuser, the energy you will get back is positive. Your action was good, you were saving a person who needed it, even at the cost of the other person. 

As always, this is just a starting point. I want to hear what you guys have to say, and I want to hear about your opinions on the Threefold Law. 

Disclaimer: no two witches are the same, just because i believe in the threefold law doesn’t mean you have to. many religions have a concept of checks and balances. and if you don’t believe in any of it, that’s okay too.
