Rachel knew Teresa was tough. Everyone knew Teresa was tough. Maybe thatās the problem. When everyone was sure that you were built to do nothing but fight and endure, you start believing it too.
It worried Rachel since it has come to the point wherein Teresaās nothing-can-break-me exterior had become extremely similar to lying. Not in a bad way, but in the way that everyone needs a little bit less of the truth in order to feel ready enough to face the day.
After the operation that fixed WICKEDās control into her head, she just smiled and said,Ā āIt didnāt hurt that much.ā
When she first learned that she had to forget Thomas eventually, and vice versa, she didnāt let tears fall. Thomas was already a mess in her arms and, as always, she needed to be the strong one.Ā āIām sure weāre going to be okay. Iām not worried for us, Tom.ā
As she watched the first group of kids get sent into the maze, she squeezed Arisā hand and said,Ā āDonāt worry. Ā Theyāll make it. Weāll make sure of it.ā
When Rachel told Teresa she loved her, Teresa held her by the shoulders and said,Ā āOf course I love you too, youāre an amazing friend.ā
But, that wasnāt all to her. Unlike what people see, Teresa Agnes was never just the tough girl with an invincible heart. Teresa had cracks to her shell just as much as everyone else had. On the rare occasion that she lets people look through the crevice in her bravado, all theyāll see is the truth spilling out with the fear sheās trying to dam up inside.
Itās those little moments. Little moments Rachel got to see.
Itās the waking up at midnight, days after the operation, and Teresa is sobbing into Rachelsā shoulder, barely getting words out.Ā āTheyāre making me feel like I canāt breathe anymore.ā

Itās the night before Rachelās turn to be sent in. Itās Teresa carefully slipped into Rachelās bed, and succumbed to her embrace. Itās them touching their foreheads - so close they can barely see each other, but Rachel could feel Teresaās damp cheeks and ragged breaths.Ā āIām sorryā¦I know what you meant. I love you too.ā
