the docks are mostly empty, just the odd boat-dwelling fisherman bedding down for the night, the dull sound of ropes knocking against wood somewhere down below the water. tess is sat on the hood of valenti's truck, convenience store coffee cooling between her hands.
it's only been a couple months, but she already knows well enough to prefer capeside after dark. less townsfolk with their jaws locked down in a smile, everything finally quiet. footsteps make their way closer and a half glance gives immediate recognition. "lemme guess. can't sleep?" her face gleans with amusement to hide how tired she actually feels. "existential crisis?" she continues, head cocking. voice lowers a note, conspiratorial. "secret dockside serial killer?" a pause. "actually don't answer that last one. i'm working on my trust issues."
