That sound. The sound of rocks and dirt bustling underneath your boots. The push and pull of the earth beneath your feet, moving you further down the trail. I've been craving these things a lot these days. Today was different though. Somehow the trail back became more enchanting than the trail in. Each small detail I had missed on the way up the path, I caught in awe on the way back down. I wanted to turn back several times but something in me told me to just keep going and my journey back down was worth it all. The way the sky decided to rain for a brief five minutes. I was there to watch it fall through the 200 foot tall trees already dripping in thick green luscious moss lit up by sunlight. I'd like to think it was God thanking me for not giving up. How the 1 o'clock light and the 4 o'clock light create two entirely different forests. I stumbled upon colorful mushrooms, fat yellow banana slugs, a snake and a little brown rabbit who stopped dead in my tracks and sat in front of me for a solid three minutes. Neither of us moving, only staring at each other. My first solo hike. Twelve miles through the Hoh Rainforest. When the other hikers had walked ahead it was just me. Alone with just the sound of my feet, my breath and a few birds. That is how I spent my day today.
