PCM January 1987
Some of the "beginners" content in this issue just might have included another go-around with "biorythms," although there was an ultra-simple hardware project to connect your Tandy 1000 to a TV via a cheap RF modulator ("sometimes there's nothing like a 21-inch color TV picture to capture attention") and William Barden, Jr. explained how to create simple animated graphics using GW-BASIC with the caveat they were nowhere near the speed needed for Saturday morning cartoons.

PCM December 1986
The Tandy 1000EX (on sale inside this issue in a Radio Shack ad bundling the computer and a monitor for $799) hits the slopes on this cover. (After scanning it, I looked at the magazine again and was left with the impression the illustration was askew on the printed cover, too...) Lonnie Falk's editorial asked "Is IBM Too Smart For Their Own Good?" in response to rumours the company was about to bring out some new PCs with custom silicon making them "unclonable"; he was confident the "standard" for a MS-DOS computer had already escaped IBM's control via the efforts of Tandy and others. A "Star Trek" adventure for the Model 100 was included this month (not quite explaining it had first been written for the original TRS-80). I once decided I would peck the adventure into my family's Model 100, eventually getting it debugged to the point of playing it, but possibly not to the point of winning it...
Organic PCM Solutions for Lithium-Ion Battery Cooling and Thermal Energy Storage
Modern industries are rapidly adopting advanced thermal technologies to improve efficiency, safety, and energy optimization. Whether it is lithium-ion battery protection, energy storage systems, electric mobility, or temperature-sensitive industrial applications, maintaining stable operating temperatures has become increasingly important. Excess heat generation and temperature fluctuations directly impact performance, reliability, and product lifespan.
Organic Phase Change Materials (PCM) have emerged as one of the most efficient solutions for thermal regulation because they absorb, store, and release thermal energy when temperatures rise or fall. Among advanced thermal management materials, OP43 and OP55 are widely suitable for battery thermal management, heat retention, and thermal energy storage applications.
Why Thermal Management Matters in Modern Applications
Temperature instability creates major challenges across industries. Batteries experience efficiency losses under high temperatures, food transportation requires stable heat retention, and industrial systems demand reliable energy storage solutions.
Effective thermal management helps industries achieve:
Better energy efficiency
Improved operational safety
Longer equipment lifespan
Reduced maintenance costs
Enhanced system reliability
Sustainable energy consumption
This growing requirement has increased demand for advanced thermal energy storage materials and passive cooling technologies.
Understanding Organic Phase Change Materials (PCM)
Phase Change Materials work by absorbing excess thermal energy during heating cycles and releasing stored energy during cooling cycles. This thermal buffering mechanism helps maintain temperature stability without depending heavily on active cooling or heating systems.
Advantages of organic PCMs include:
High latent heat storage capacity
Reusable thermal cycling performance
Low maintenance requirements
Eco-friendly composition
Long operational life
Consistent thermal stability
These properties make organic PCMs ideal for battery systems, industrial applications, energy storage systems, and temperature-sensitive environments.
OP43 for Lithium-Ion Battery Thermal Management
Lithium-ion batteries generate significant heat during charging, discharging, and high-load operation. Excessive temperature rise may reduce efficiency, shorten battery life, and increase thermal runaway risks.
OP43 is engineered for battery thermal management applications where maintaining stable temperatures is essential.
Key Benefits of OP43
Improved Battery Safety
Temperature spikes inside battery modules may create performance and safety challenges. OP43 absorbs excess heat and helps maintain controlled operating conditions.
Better Battery Life
Stable thermal conditions reduce stress on battery cells and contribute to improved lifecycle performance.
Passive Cooling Performance
Unlike active cooling systems, PCM-based cooling requires minimal energy input while providing continuous thermal regulation.
Enhanced Thermal Stability
The material supports multiple thermal cycles, making it suitable for long-term battery applications.
Applications of OP43
Lithium-ion battery packs
Electric vehicle batteries
Battery energy storage systems
Portable electronics
Solar energy storage systems
Industrial battery modules
OP55 for Thermal Energy Storage and Heat Retention Applications
While many systems require cooling, several industries need controlled heat retention and thermal storage. OP55 supports thermal energy storage applications by storing heat and releasing it gradually over time.
This makes OP55 valuable for applications where maintaining elevated temperatures is important.
Advantages of OP55
Efficient Thermal Energy Storage
Heat absorbed during charging cycles can be stored and released when required, improving system efficiency.
Heat Retention Capability
OP55 supports applications requiring consistent temperatures for extended durations.
Sustainable Thermal Performance
Repeated thermal cycling improves long-term operational value.
Reduced Energy Consumption
Passive thermal storage reduces dependency on active heating systems.
Applications of OP55
Thermal energy storage systems
Hot food transportation
Industrial heat retention systems
Battery protection solutions
Solar thermal applications
Medical temperature management
Battery Safety and Thermal Runaway Prevention
Battery safety remains one of the most critical challenges in electric mobility and energy storage. Thermal runaway events occur when battery temperatures rise uncontrollably, creating serious operational risks.
Advanced PCM technologies help minimize these risks through:
Heat absorption during peak temperatures
Temperature stabilization
Reduced thermal stress
Better cell balancing
Improved battery reliability
Thermal management solutions using PCM materials provide additional protection layers without increasing energy consumption significantly.
Why Passive Thermal Energy Storage Is Growing
Traditional thermal control systems require pumps, fans, electronics, and continuous power consumption. Passive thermal energy storage solutions simplify temperature management while reducing complexity.
Benefits include:
Lower operating costs
Reduced maintenance
Compact integration
Improved sustainability
Energy efficiency improvements
As industries move toward cleaner technologies, PCM-based thermal management continues expanding across multiple sectors.
Future of Organic PCM Solutions
Demand for lithium-ion batteries, renewable energy systems, and thermal energy storage technologies continues growing globally. Advanced organic PCM materials are becoming increasingly important because they offer scalable, reusable, and energy-efficient thermal solutions.
OP43 and OP55 support this transition by delivering temperature stability across battery applications, heat retention systems, and energy storage solutions.

Yelling into the void of magick-/witchblr:
Does anyone else here use Kpop or Kpop idols in their craft?
I'm probably finally getting the lightstick of my ultimate bias group of 10 years, and I'm fully intending to use it as a wand. I see my albums and posters as energetic and almost holy artifacts, and my ultimate bias photocard is on Prince Stolas' altar, who quite likes it.
I'd love to find others with a similar brand of chaos-/pop culture magick to feel a little less alone.
