Pacifica straightens up- she hardly hears Fiddleford call her middle name and when he does itâs either because heâs worried to death or sheâs done something to earn it. From the tone of his voice he hadnât woken up from a nightmare thinking she was hurt or kidnapped so she must be in trouble.
She goes over every possible thing she couldâve done or neglected to do- whatever she did or didnât do she sure wasnât going to start asking what she did.
Her heart drops when she enters and heâs holding a paper and envelope in his hand with the other resting on his hip.
âYes, dad?â
He looks at her sternly over his glasses, sapphire eyes hard to read. âWouldja care ta explain why yer failinâ mathâmatics anâ history?â
Pacifica twiddles her thumbs and looks at his shoes- heâs taken to wearing shoes and theyâre taken care of but have a little dust on them from walking outdoors but have been polished recently.
âI-Iâm sorry, I donâtâŠâ
âPâcifica, darlinâ, look at me,â he says. Her own sapphire eyes lift to meet his and she looks frightened. His eyes soften a little. âNow, answer my question.â
âTh-those classes are really hard,â she whines.
âYou couldâve come tâ ask fer help at any time,â he replies.
Her eyes flicker downward in shame. âI knowâŠâ
âWhy didnât you?â
She shrugs.
He sighs and steps forward, reaching out and lifting her chin to look at him. âAhâm not angry, sweetheart. Ahâm just trynna understand.â
âIâm just⊠Iâm just bad at math and history,â she complains. âNone of it makes sense and Iâm too stu-â
âPacifica Elise McGucket you are not stupid,â he says sharply.
She stares at him for a long moment. âB-b-â
âNo buts. You are a bright young woman⊠you just need to put a little more work into it. Take extra time.â
âItâs hardâŠâ
âThen ask for help.â
She presses her lips together.
âAh, I see⊠well then ah guess ahâll hafta help you with yer homework until your grades are back up,â he says.
âReally?â
âOf course, sweetheart⊠and tâ give ya extra motivation yuh ainât allowed tâ watch tv anâ yâgotta give me yer phone anytime yer home.â
âBut dad!â She has no idea what sheâs going to say but whatever it is she doesnât have to worry about saying it.
âYer grades are important and ah canât let yer grades slippingâ so far go unpunished- âspecially since you neglected tâ lemme see yer progress report.â
Her head hangs and frustration builds in her chest. âYes, sir.â
He kisses her forehead. âNow go getchure homework and meet me in the dininâ room. Weâre gonna start now.â
Pacifica nods and makes her way to her room. This wasnât exactly what she thought would happen but itâs certainly nice to know that her dad was willing to help her get better. If it were Preston-
She shakes that thought from her mind and grabs her homework without a second thought. She makes her way down to the dining room and is surprised to find snacks set out and McGucket sipping on lemonade as he looks at one of his blueprints. At this point sheâs sure heâd been working in there before he went to check the mail.
He doesnât notice her for several seconds as he makes calculations but when he finishes he glances up and sees his daughter standing there.
âCâmon, darlinâ,â he says with a soft smile.
She nods and makes her way over, sitting beside him.
He didnât give her the answers, merely lead her to them in the math portion, correcting her after sheâs finished. She found herself getting the hang of it after a while.
âWhy canât it make sense like this in class?â She complains.
âCase you donât ask questions.â He tilts his head so they make eye contact. âThereâs no shame in askinâ fer help.â
Pacifica fidgets with her pen. âThey said-â
âIt doesnât matter what they said,â Fiddleford quickly cuts in. âThey were wrong about the way they treated you and wrong in what they taught you. Ahâll let you know if they get anything right aside from skin treatment.â
She smiles. âThanks, dad.â
âAny time, sweetheart,â he replies and then kisses her cheek. âNow, off tâ bed. Itâs ten-thirty and we both need the sleep.â
She gathers her homework and smiles. âGood night!â
