So my O.W.L.s for the #owlsreadathon2018 with @book_roast are progressing slowly but surely. I finished In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker for Astronomy, the Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert for Herbology, and Talking As Fast As I Can by Lauren Graham for Muggle Studies (this was a last minute change as somehow I didnāt realize in the beginning that it said muggle NON-fiction. Now Iām about to start The Last Namsara for Charms!! Iām hoping it will be 4 stars, as all the others Iāve only given 3. After that only one left to receive outstanding!! #book #books #bookstagram #readathon #ordinarywizardinglevels (at Plateau Mont-Royal)
This was the first book I finished this month and it left me so blown by how fascinating the premise and execution was. Had to go do some research on the Russian nesting doll afterwards. Also discovered the #owlsreadathon2018 while reading and this conveniently checks off one of the challenges! āāā #bookstagram #ya #thefifthdoll #charlielholmberg #journaling #ebook
I am currently taking part in the O.W.L.S readathon. I completed my muggle studies twice over with Go Ask Alice and The Magnolia Story. Now I'm working on potions with Strange the Dreamer. (This book isšš»)
okay, so i know how ugly this graphic is, BUT this is a very exciting post, as iāll be letting you all know my tbr for the owls readathon! this readathon is hosted by g over at bookroast (you can find the announcement video right here), and basically, the goal is to complete your owls (ordinary wizarding levels) by completing reading challenges that have to do with the various school subjects at hogwarts. you only need to complete five challenges to get anĀ āoā, aka the highest grade, but iām nothing if not competitive, so iāll be attempting to get all twelves owls! the readathon will last from april 2nd to april 29th, and below the cut, you can find my tbr for it!Ā
ANCIENT RUNES. a book with a symbol on the cover: legend, by marie lu.Ā
legend is one of those ya dystopian books that seem like a must-read. i already started reading it once and hated it, but iāve read more from marie lu ever since, and i feel like giving it a second chance. itās basically about these two people on opposing sides of society who have a lot of reasons to hate each other, but end up forced to spend time together and uncover a secret about their society that might shake everything. or at least, i think thatās what itās about.
ARITHMANCY.Ā read a book with a number on the cover or in the title:Ā batgirl and the birds of prey, volume 1: who is oracle, by julie benson.
the first batgirl volume in the rebirth has been out for a little while now, but since i just got into dc comics and am trying to read the batfam comics in order (within rebirth), iām just getting to this. i donāt currently have a copy of it, but iām hoping to receive one for my birthday (march 29, just saying), and worst case scenario iāll be borrowing it from the library. also, i wish i could tell you what itās about, but i prefer going into trade paperbacks without knowing anything, so yes.Ā
ASTRONOMY. read a science fiction novel: obsidio, by amie kaufman and jay kristoff.
another book iām hoping to receive for my birthday! and one of my most anticipated books of the year, without a doubt. this is the third book in the illuminae files series, which is a science fiction ya series told in mixed media format. each book follows a different duo, but follows the events of an attack on a planet, and i feel like saying anything else would be saying too much.
CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES. read a book that involves magical creatures or features a magical creature on the cover: harry potter and the philosopherās stone, by jk rowling.
iām constantly listening to the harry potter series on repeat on audiobook, so i know for a fact that iāll be getting to this book in april, since itās the one iām reading next. in case you didnāt know, harry potter follows an eleven year old boy who learns heās a wizard and then gets to go to a magical school called hogwarts. thereās more to it, but thatās the basic summary.
CHARMS. read a fantasy book: children of blood and bone, by tomi adeyemi.Ā
this is my most anticipated book of the year, and i absolutely canāt wait to read it. itās a ya fantasy book set in a west-african inspired world where magic has been taken away, and we follow a girl who takes on the task of bringing magic back. i really hope iām getting this book for my birthday, because wow. iām so excited.
DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS. book about/featuring secret societies/clubs: the young elites, by marie lu.
this is going to be a re-read, because iām planning on reading the second book in this series for another readathon, and i donāt remember much of the first one except for the main characterās name. basically, this is about a villainās origin story, and i liked it okay the first time i read it. i only gave it three stars, but i was more difficult with my ratings back then, so iām happy to give it a second chance.
DIVINATION. read a book featuring prophecies: the mark of athena, by rick riordan.Ā
thanks to sage for pointing out that any book by rick riordan would work for this challenge! i already started this book and am close to being halfway in, but for some reason i havenāt picked it up in a long time. it was really good, though, so iām excited to pick it up again. itās the third book in the heroes of olympus series, which is the follow up series to percy jackson and the olympians, which has to do with demigods fighting bad guys.
HERBOLOGY. read a book with a nature related word in the title: of fire and stars, by audrey coulthourst.Ā
this is another book iāve already started, but that iāll probably need to start from the beginning because i donāt remember much. i wasnāt in love with what i had read so far, but i loved the premise, so iām excited to try reading it again. itās a ya fantasy book in which two princesses fall in love, and if that doesnāt sound amazing, i donāt know what does.
HISTORY OF MAGIC. read a historical fiction: the book thief, by markus zusak.
i read the first few chapters of this book a few years ago, and i remember being blown away by how amazing it was. i wasnāt as much into reading back then, though, so i probably stopped because i was distracted by something else. anyway, this is a ya historical fiction set during world war ii and itās narrated by death and just, itās supposedly amazing, and from what iāve read so far, i have to agree. again, though, iāll be starting from the beginning.
MUGGLE STUDIES. read a muggle non-fiction book: histoire de la comtesse dāaulnoy, by fernande gontier.
i got this book for christmas, and iām still only 1/6th of the way through, and iāve decided that april is the month where i finish it. itās a historical nonfiction story about marie-catherine dāaulnoy, a famous french fairy tale writer from the same time as charles perrault who was forgotten by history, i wonder why, and who led a pretty wild life. so far itās amazing, and i canāt wait to finish it so i can read her fairy tales.
POTIONS. read a book about/with alchemy: le parfum, by patrick süskind.
i started this book about eight years ago but never continued it, and i honestly donāt remember anything about it. itās the story of a murderer in france and it has to do with alchemy and perfumes, which is why i think itās perfect for this challenge. on top of that, it means that iāll be reading two books in french this month, which is good for my yearly reading goals.
TRANSFIGURATION. read a book that deals with transfiguration/shapeshifting or similar theme or a book with a cat on the cover: bruja born, by zoraida córdova.
ok, so i might be cheating a little bit with this one, but thereās glamour in it, aka changing someoneās appearance with magic, and iām counting it. if itās not good enough, iāll be reading harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban to make up for it. anyhow. bruja born is the second book in the brooklyn brujas series, and i was lucky enough to get an arc of it. itās one of my most anticipated books of the year, and i absolutely canāt wait to read it.
